Why there are no Six-toed Sloths

by Kathy A. Svitil
Ten fingers and toes is one of life's immutable limits. No modern land-lubbing vertebrate has more than that, a consistent pattern that has long puzzled biologists. Christopher Hayes thinks the explanation is simple: It was just a matter of evolution weeding out the clumsy. Stunted limbs make polydacty mice and men trip over their own feet. "We can keep our feet flat when we walk because of the mechanical strut of the tibia, the big bone of the lower leg. So if you lose the far end of the tibia, your foot will rotate and you'll have the equivalent of a congenital clubfoot," Hayes says. Shortening in the arm causes similarly awkward twisting, especially for tree-swinging animals. Creatures with extra digits probably would not have survived, which explains why we give high fives and count in base 10.

Photosynthetic Sloths of Amazonia
a mere One River by Wade Davis!
The three-toed sloth is a gentle herbivore. Its slow movements, together with its cryptic coloration, protect it from its major predator, the harpy eagle.
Viewed up close, the sloth appears as a hallucination, an ecosystem unto itself that softly vibrates with hundreds of exoparasites. The animal's mottled appearance is due in part to a blue-green alga that lives symbiotically within its hollow hairs. A dozen varieties of arthropods burrow beneath its fur; a single sloth weighing a mere ten pounds may be home to over a thousand beetles. The life cycles off these insects are completely tied to the daily round of the sloth. With its excruciatingly slow metabolism, the sloth defacates only once a week. The animal climbs down from the canopy, excavates a small depression at the foot of the tree, voids its feces, and then returns back up. Mites, beetles, and even a few species of moth leap off the sloth, deposit an egg in the dung, and climb back onto their host for a ride up the tree. The eggs germinate, and in one way or another, the young insects find another sloth to call home. Why would this animal go down to the base of the tree, exposing itself to all forms of terrestrial predation, when it could just as easily deficate from the treetops?

Ground sloths A scene in the low deserts of Imperial County, California of about 11,000 years ago, showing a Shasta ground sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastense ), an animal perhaps resembling something in between an anteater and a tree sloth. Plants include Agaves ( Agave deserti) , Calico cactus ( Echinocactus engelmanni ), and Brittlebush ( Encelia farinosa ). This small ground sloth was distributed over California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, west Texas, southern Utah, northern Mexico, and southern Alberta. Above, the large Harlan's ground sloth ( Glossotherium harlani ); below, Shasta ground sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastense ). These strange extinct beasts were herbivorous, slow-moving animals, many species having bony armor ossicles embedded in the skin, and large claws on the forefeet. Glossotherium was found across the southern United States, and may have been a grazer. Nothrotheriops dung has been recovered from caves in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. It had a diet of many desert plants that are often uneaten by any animal today, such as juniper ( Juniperus ), saltbush (

"Animal Liberation will require greater altruism on the part of human beings than any other liberation movement. The animals themselves are incapable of demanding their own liberation, or of protesting against their condition with votes, demonstrations or bombs. Human beings have the power to continue to oppress other species forever, or until we make the planet unsuitable for living beings. Will our tyranny continue, proving that we really are the selfish tyrants that the most cynical of poets and philosophers have always said we are? Or will we rise to the challenge and prove our capacity for genuine altruism by ending the ruthless oppression of species in our power, not because we are forced to do so by rebels or terrorists, but because we recognise our position is morally indefensible? The way in which we answer this question depends on the way each one of us, individually, answers it." Peter Singer ALF FAQ

Some of them are the Three-Toed sloth, and the Two-Toed sloth. That just means that they have two and three claws. Their claws are very big so that they can hang on to a branch. um, we were started 4-5 years ago by ryan and adam. the name came because at the time adam and ryan wanted to be a super fast punk and and sloths are real slow so it would by like an oxymoron (dunno about spelling on that). shortly after adam and ryan started they decided they needed a singer and Mogley (adams brother) would be the person for it, but Mogley wasn't always going to sing cause he sucked... and so sometime they'd find a new singer. then we needed a bass so basically we talked chris into buying a bass and playing with us and that is how the sloths came to be... then this last year my bro and ryan and chris all graduated and so we got eman to play drums and now Mogleys playing guitar. Sloths If you could see a sloth up in the trees of South America, you might think it was moving in slow motion. That slowness is actually the key to the sloth's success.
Monday, June 14, 1999
JB: This is Earth and Sky, with a question from a Michigan listener. DB: Rob Rich asks, "If sloths are so slow, how come they haven't been gobbled up by predators and gone extinct?" JB: On the contrary, Rob, the slow movements of a sloth are the essence of its success. Sloths are tree-dwelling mammals with tiny heads and long arms. They live in the tropics of South America. If you could see one, you might be amazed by the deliberate way a sloth moves its limbs, almost as if it's moving in slow motion. DB: The sloths' predators include large birds of prey such as the harpy eagle. These hunters usually detect their prey when it moves against its background. Sloths keep their motion to a minimum and they move very slowly when they do shift position. So they're less visible to predators. What's more, sloths have a unique form of camouflage. Most mammals have relatively smooth hair, but the hair of a sloth is pitted or grooved. Green algae live in the grooves and give a greenish tinge to the sloth's yellowish or grayish fur which helps the sloth blend in with its leafy environment. JB: It's good that sloths tend to stay high up in the trees safe from fierce hunters like jaguars and ocelots. Slowness would make them vulnerable on the ground which is perhaps why the ground sloths that used to roam North America are now extinct. Rob, thanks for your question, and with thanks to the National Science Foundation, we're Block and Byrd for Earth and Sky.
