Social Anthropology
The Department of Social Anthropology offers two Masters level courses. The M.Phil. in Social Anthropological Analysis (SAA) and the M.Phil. in Social Anthropological Research (SAR). I. The SAA course is designed to cater for graduate students from diverse backgrounds, with different levels of previous training, and with different specialist interests. The course offers three different programmes of study:
  • The Scope of Social Anthroplogy
Takes advantage of the Department's strengths in core areas of the discipline and is followed through a taught course. Present M.Phil. seminars focus on Production and Reproduction, and Systems of Power and Knowledge. Development Anthropology
This option, run in collaboration with the University programme in Development Studies, aims to provide anthropological perspectives on a variety of practical development issues. Central themes in debates about anthropology and development are examined in relation to regional examples of development initiatives and problems. Social Anthropology and the Work of a Museum
This option provides a practical and research training component within the M.Phil. Degree Course in Social Anthropology for candidates who wish to specialise in museum study. Based within the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, this option provides training in museum practice, museum theory and museum research.

This site is about social anthropology. It is about people Social anthropology is a science. It is a recognized subject taught at several universities, including at least one I located in Britain and one in New Zealand. Loosely stated, social anthropology is the study of people, and of how they interact with each other in today's global society. I started realizing its significance after reading a short article in the French Edition of "Vogue". The article was about the "desexualization" of our society. It convincingly pointed out how people talk more about sex in magazines and on TV shows, but have less and less sex in real life. A particularly relevant thought on the subject was attributed to Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Director of the French Institute for Fashion, who is considered a renowned expert on social anthropology Social anthropology is about what people do. About what they think. What they like and dislike. How they behave with respect to each other, how they try to influence each other. How they try to pursue happiness and enjoy themselves. It is about males and females. How they desire each other and try to make themselves desirable to each other. It is about sex and about politics. It is about artistic aspirations, the pursuit of beauty. It is about philosophy and the age-old attempt to define morals in a way that makes logical sense. It is about the quest to live a meaningful life.

Introduction to Social Anthropology, Fall 2002
How do cultures shape the ways in which their members experience the world?
In a world of differences, how do anthropologists understand other cultures (and their own)?
What are the intellectual and ethical challenges in sorting out the differences from the commonalties in making sense of the complexities of human experiences in diverse times and places? This introductory exploration of anthropological perspectives on culture, society, language, and history tackles these major themes: What is culture? What is anthropology? Ethnography as method Culture, symbol, and ritual Language, classification, and cognition Exchange, kinship, and social organization Ethnicity, race, and nationalism Contemporary culture(s) of globalization Lectures, readings, and documentary films introduce ethnographic examples from around the world (especially Asia, North America, Latin America, Oceania, and Europe), as well as a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, to broadly introduce contemporary social and cultural anthropology and its relationship to other social and behavioral sciences.

The Royal Anthropological Institute seeks to combine a distinguished tradition of scholarship stretching back over more than 150 years with the active provision of services to contemporary anthropology and anthropologists (including students of anthropology). It has a particular commitment to promoting the public understanding of anthropology, and the contribution of anthropology to public affairs. It publishes journals, has a privileged link with the Anthropology Library (British Museum), has a film and video library and an extensive photographic collection, gives awards for outstanding scholarship, organises lectures and meetings, and manages a number of trust funds for research. The journals circulate throughout the world, and about 70% of subscriptions revenue comes from outside the UK. The Institute's regular special lectures comprise the Huxley Memorial Lecture and Presidential Address (both delivered annually) and the Henry Myers and Curl Lectures (given in alternate years). Other special events are organised from time to time, and are widely advertised.

Judd has specialized in the study of contemporary Chinese society and culture. Her earlier work was primarily in symbolic anthropology and cultural production, especially in relation to drama, and she recently returned to this area with researchon popular ritual opera, especially mulianxi. Since 1985, she has been conducting research in the north China countryside, examining changes in rural social organization in the wake of the rural economic reform. Much of this work has involved examination of the reformulation of gender in the countryside, and this led to concentrated work on the contemporary women's movement. Since the 1980s, she has also been engaged in development work in China in connection with the Canadian International Development Agency, and with a focus on gender analysis and gender and development work.

    Postgraduate Programme in Social Anthropology
Social Anthropology - PhD, MPhil and MA by Research
These are three year, two year and one year programmes of research respectively. Students doing these programmes work under the guidance of a supervisor and are expected to have done a taught masters training course before embarking on their research.
Social Anthropology - MA and Postgraduate Diploma
This programme is designed as an advanced course in Social Anthropology and is intended for students who have already studied Anthropology as a degree course or a major part of a degree course at undergraduate level. It is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council as of Research Training status and the Department has Mode A recognition. This means that on successful completion of the course students are considered by the ESRC as sufficiently prepared to embark on research in Social Anthropology. Many of our students do in fact go on to do MPhil and PhD research. Others use their MA qualifications in courses ranging from research work in government departments, to teaching and nursing and work overseas.
Social Anthropology and Computing - MA and Postgraduate Diploma
The aim of this programme is to prepare you to apply appropriate computer-based methods to anthropological research at a relatively advanced and creative level. You will develop a research perspective in social anthropology - the design, planning, implementation and analysis of anthropological research - and apply specialised computing methods to anthropological research and analysis.
