The National Soil DataBase (NSDB)
The NSDB is the set of computer readable files which contain soil, landscape, and climatic data for all of Canada. It serves as the national archive for land resources information that was collected by federal and provincial field surveys, or created by land data analysis projects. The NSDB includes GIS coverages at a variety of scales, and the characteristics of each named soil series. The principal types of NSDB data holdings (ordered by scale) are as follows.
National Ecological Framework (EcoZones, EcoRegions, and EcoDistricts)
  • intended for use at scales of 1:30 million to 1:1 million coverage includes the entire land mass of Canada polygons are nested groupings of Soil Landscapes of Canada polygons data is available from other federal and provincial agencies
Soil Map of Canada / Land Potential DataBase (LPDB)
  • scale of 1:5 million coverage includes the entire land mass of Canada originally produced in the early 1980s; much of this information is outdated and better data is available (

Soil Taxonomy
In 1975, Soil Taxonomy was published by the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Survey Staff. This system for classifying soils has undergone numerous changes since that time and remains one of the most widely used soil classification systems in the world.
At the highest level, Soil Taxonomy places soils in one of twelve categories known as orders. We have put together a collection of information and images to illustrate the distribution, properties, ecological significance, and use of these 12 soil orders.

The Soil Liquefaction web site was developed to provide general information for interested lay persons, and more detailed information for engineers. Visitors who are not familiar with soil liquefaction can find answer to typical questions below.
What
is soil liquefaction? When has soil liquefaction occurred in the past? Where does soil liquefaction commonly occur? Why does soil liquefaction occur? How can soil liquefaction hazards be reduced? Research - links to sites on soil liquefaction research. Links to sites with earthquake and soil liquefaction information. Content - an overview of the soil liquefaction web site.
The site is organized so that visitors can navigate by viewing the answers to each of these questions. Clicking on the blue dots will provide answers at a level that does not require a background in engineering. More detailed information, presented at a level that does require an engineering background, can be obtained by following the links labeled "More" at the end of each section. Most of the photos on the site can be viewed in a larger version by clicking on the photos.

What is soil and soil survey?
  • Soil The more-or-less continuous cover of the earth's land surface that forms by surface and near-surface processes, including physical, chemical and biological weathering, animal activity, and reorganisation of mineral and organic material. The soil cover is in places more or less influenced by human activity. Soil Survey , also called Soil Resource Inventory (SRI)
  • As a document Any spatially-explicit information about the distribution of soil types or properties. These are usually presented as maps with an accompanying report . To be useful in a GIS, the SRI should be available in digital form as a Soil Geographic Database (SGDB)
  • As an activity The process of determining the types or properties of the soil cover over a landscape, and mapping them for others to understand and use.
It is a branch of applied physical geography, and draws heavily from geomorphology, analysis of vegetation and land-use patterns, and theories of soil formation. Primary data for the soil survey are acquired by field sampling and remote sensing.

http://homepages.which.net/~fred.moor/soil/formed/f01.htm
Come back and see us again soon. The answer lies in the soil. Soil is made up of ground up fragments of rock. The smallest of these might be microscopic. Soil also contains decaying organic matter, water, and air. It is “home” for roots, seeds, spores, insects, fungi, bacteria, worms and other organisms. Your garden soil has delicately balanced life chains which are probably more important than the plant and animal life chains that depend on it for their existence. The soil life chains are easily damaged, especially by machinery or through waterlogging. Understanding your soil is crucial to successful gardening and, in the longer term, the survival of mankind. Learning and knowing about your soil is the ultimate key to success. This section on formation looks at basic principles: Where does soil come from
