De Kersauson says his squid was three times as big
French sailors taking part in the round-the-world Jules Verne Trophy say they have come across one of the most elusive monsters of the sea: the giant squid. We didn't have anything to scare off this beast [...] We weren't going to attack it with our penknives
Olivier de Kersauson
Veteran yachtsman Olivier De Kersauson, who sailed from Brittany on Saturday, said that several hours into his voyage he found that a giant squid had clamped on to the hull of his boat. The creature, scientifically known as Architeutis dux , is the largest of all invertebrates. Scientists believe it can be as long as 18 metres (60 feet). Giant squid have been found washed ashore or caught in the nets of trawlers, but scientists have never seen one alive. Stuff of legend Olivier de Kersauson said the sighting occurred off the Portuguese island of Madeira.

The squid has been seen at several locations
A new and bizarre type of squid has been reported by marine biologists.
It is very distinctive with the very long skinny arms, with an elbow
Mike Vecchione The cephalopod, which has spidery, seven-metre-long (20 feet) arms, is detailed in the journal Science. The creature has been spotted in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and in the Gulf of Mexico. One sighting was made at a depth of 4,734 metres (15,534 feet) - almost five kilometres (three miles) below the surface - in the western Atlantic, off the coast of Brazil. The researchers behind the discovery say the find indicates how little we know about life in the Earth's largest ecosystem. Independent sightings The squid's arms are longer than those of any known squid species and held in an unusual position: spread outward from the body and then bent anteriorly.
A specimen must be caught for classification purposes
The scientists speculate that the squid may be an adult member of the recently identified family called Magnapinnidae (which means "big fin"). Only juvenile squids in this family have been seen before. More research will be required, however, before the animals can be properly classified.

Giant squid attacks boat
January 17 2003 A French yacht taking part in the Jules Verne round-the-world sailing trophy has been attacked by a giant squid in the mid-Atlantic, its skipper announced by radio link. Veteran yachtsman Oliver de Kersauson, at the helm of the trimaran Geronimo, said the boat was hit by strange vibrations on Sunday, so he sent a crew member below deck to try to identify what was wrong. "Suddenly he saw something moving," de Kersauson said. "It was tentacles. "The squid was pulling really hard, so we put the boat about and when we came to a stop the tentacles let go. We saw it behind the boat - and it was enormous. I have been sailing for 40 years, and I have never seen the like," he said. Crew member Didier Ragault, who spotted the creature through a port-hole said "the tentacles were as thick as my arm wearing an oil-skin, and I immediately thought of the damage it could do. Giant Squid Babies Captured
By Mark Schrope, Discovery News Myth of the Giant Squid: The Kraken. Technical Information: Parts of the Giant Squid ... (PHOTOS) Feb. 27 — For the first time ever, researchers have gotten a brief look at living babies of the deep sea's most elusive known creature — the giant squid. Though numerous groups have attempted the feat, an adult giant squid, Architeuthis dux , which can grow as long as a city bus, has never been seen alive, though countless dead ones have come up in fishing nets.
Steve O'Shea of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, in Wellington, decided to take a novel approach and hunt for baby, or juvenile giant squid. His team's efforts are chronicled in the upcoming documentary "Chasing Giants: On the Trail of the Giant Squid," which airs on the Discovery Channel March 11.

The Squid is an invertebrate (animal without a backbone) that swims in the oceans. This mollusk is closely related to the octopus. Squid can change the color of their skin to mimic their environment and hide from predators. Squid are soft-bodied cephalopods . They move by squirting water from the mantle through the siphon, using a type of jet propulsion. When in danger, squid squirt a cloud of dark ink in order to confuse their attacker and allow the squid to escape. Squid reproduce by releasing eggs into the water. Some squid eggs are free-floating, others are attached to seaweed or to the ocean floor. Anatomy : Squid range from 1 to 60 ft (0.3 to 18 m) long. The biggest squid is the Giant Squid (Architeuthis) . Squid have a large mantle/head (with a large brain), eight arms with suckers, two longer feeding tentacles, a beak, a large head, two large eyes, and two hearts. Their large eyes are very similar in structure to people's eyes. They breathe using gills. Diet : Squid eat fish, crustaceans (like

This site is dedicated to Southern Calamari Sepioteuthis australis ), which is the most accessible squid species for land-based fisherman in Southern Australia. Southern Calamari (more correctly known as Southern Calamary) can be caught all year round, typically in waters less than 10 metres deep. They grow as large as 4 kg!!!! Calamari are aggressive predators that feed mostly on small fish and crustaceans. Recreational fisherman typically encounter small schools of calamari (less than 10 individuals) and they are usually found overpatchy reef or seagrass beds. Research scientists from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) have encountered schools of up to 10,000 individuals.

What's the Squid-Log-Analyzer?
Squid-Log-Analyzer is a smal perl-script, which analyses the file access.log generated by the Squid-Proxy-Server
I hope this tool will be useful. You may use and distribute it for free under the terms of the GNU general public license. See the README file and the head of the script for more information about the license.
How to install
At first, you have to download the package. (6 KB) After downloading the package place it in a warm dry place in your PC, unzip and untar it (e.g. with: tar -xzf squid-log-analyzer-0.6.tar.gz ) cd into the directory ( cd squid-log-analyzer-0.6 ) and execute the program with ./run
A file called squidlog.htm is generated, you may open it with your favourite web-browser.
Propably you like to change some options: just edit the squid-log-analyzer.conf file. It is well commented. You should be able to edit it with any texteditor. If there are any problems with the problem look at the Help-section
Help

I was a casual collector of pre-1970 Lesney Matchbox cars. Now I'm probably a little more committed, but not over the edge (don't get my family's opinion of that, however...). I have two displays containing one of each of the roughly 250 different major die styles (according to Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia of Matchbox) of the 'Regular Wheel' Lesney and Moko 1-75 series from 1953-1969. I am not concerned with their 'investment value', so I do not look for mint-in-box models, just clean looking ones. Now I look for some of the other pre-1970 series (some of the MOY (Models of Yesteryear), Major Packs, King Size, etc.) or for the occasional 1-75 model to replace a not-so-clean one in my collection. I started with the 90+ 1967-1969 models from my childhood, then began augmenting the collection (the few missing from 1968, a few more to complete 1966-1968 group, adding the late 1968-1969 models, adding a few I just like, etc.). Now I'm hooked as an adult as I was as a kid - what fun!
