Why Talk About Severe Thunderstorms?
Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms. Thunderstorms affect relatively small areas when compared with hurricanes and winter storms. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 20 to 30 minutes. Of the estimated 100,000 thunderstorms that occur each year in the United States, only about 10 percent are classified as severe. All thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding.

Thunderstorms rattle Southern states
May 27, 1997
Web posted at: 6:55 p.m. EDT (2255 GMT) (AP) Thunderstorms rolled across the South with high wind and hail on Tuesday, and scattered thunderstorms fell over the Plains. Chilly air pushed into New England. A line of thunderstorms looped across the South during the night and Tuesday morning, with strong wind and hail more than 2 inches in diameter reported in parts of Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. During the afternoon, as that complex of storms bulged eastward, severe thunderstorms developed in parts of Georgia with heavy rain and wind gusting to more than 60 mph. Some of those thunderstorms extended into northern Florida. Thunderstorms also developed during the afternoon across eastern Texas and moved into neighboring sections of Arkansas and Louisiana. On Monday, thunderstorms in eastern Oklahoma set off tornadoes that touched down in rural areas of seven counties. Only one injury was reported. Light to moderate showers stretched across the middle of the country during the afternoon from Montana to Kentucky, with heavier rain and occasional thunderstorms in eastern Nebraska, Iowa and the northeastern corner of Missouri. Elsewhere, cool air settled across the Northeast and a frost warning was posted for Wednesday morning in parts of southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, the National Weather Service said.

Thunderstorms hit Plains, while Northeast, West bask
July 11, 1997
Web posted at: 1:41 p.m. EDT (1741 GMT) Scattered thunderstorms rumbled across the Plains early Friday, while rain fell on the Northwest and the Southeast. It was generally dry and calm elsewhere. By tonight, storms packing 60 mph winds and hail were possible in the Carolinas and Georgia. Strong thunderstorms were also forecast from eastern Montana into western Nebraska. Dry conditions and partly cloudy skies were expected from the Great Lakes into New England, while much of the West was to be dry and calm. Scattered storms were forecast over the Rockies and Northwest. Severe storms moved across the Plains late Thursday. Winds gusting to 85 mph knocked over part of a grain elevator in Tolley, North Dakota, and were blamed for scattered power outages across the western half of the state. Over North Dakota, an American Airlines flight from Seattle to New York was rerouted to Denver after 22 people were injured in severe turbulence. In southeast Nebraska, roads in four counties were washed out after 7 inches of rain. There were reports of lowland flooding.

Thunderstorms

It's that time of year when storm-lovers get ready to enjoy the powerful thunderstorms of the summer season. Now that the warmer months have arrived in the United States, the frequency of thunderstorms is likely to increase, especially in the central and eastern parts of our nation. Defining thunderstorms As defined in the Glossary of Meteorology (1), a thunderstorm is: "A local storm invariably produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, and always accompanied by lightning and thunder, usually with strong gusts of wind, heavy rain, and sometimes with hail. It is usually of short duration, seldom over two hours for any one storm." Another, more minimalistic definition for a thunderstorm can be found in The Meteorological Glossary (2): "One or more sudden electrical discharges, manifested by a flash of light (lightning) and a sharp or rumbling sound (thunder.)"

Any cloud with a lot of moisture can create the watered-down soup we call rain. But it takes a special recipe with the right ingredients to make a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are one of nature's most exotic weather dishes. Unlike ordinary rain storms, thunderstorms have a delicate balance of airborne water vapor that is whipped by convection cells, and then chilled to the point of condensation. The newly created precipitation is combined with wind and lightning to create a distinct and flavorful storm that is known all over the world as a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms can vary according to recipe or ingredients. Some special thunderstorms have hail or powerful wind gusts added to them. A powerful and spicy thunderstorm will include a tornado. So satisfy your hunger for this tasty weather morsel. Read through Thunderstorms: A Recipe and learn about everything related to this distinct weather dish.
You can start by finding out the forces that make a thunderstorm.

document.write(''); Martin Johnson Heade Exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts The Hunter Museum: Martin Johnson Heade Martin Johnson Heade: An American Original A master of light, atmosphere and mood, the 19th-century artist is now recognized as one of this country's great Romantic painters A small canvas caught the attention of art dealer Robert G. McIntyre at the "Romantic Painting in America" exhibition at New York City's Museum of Modern Art in 1944. Titled Thunder Storm on Narragansett Bay , the painting was by the 19th-century artist Martin Johnson Heade. "I was struck with the force of the thing," McIntyre later wrote, "with the powerful drama being enacted...a breath-taking sense of elemental fury." Although Heade had shown his work frequently during his 65-year career, his reputation had been obscured by a shroud of critical indifference. For nearly half a century after his death, it was as if he had never painted a picture. The Museum of Modern Art exhibition, however, sparked new interest in his work. Today Heade is admired for his originality and for the subtle atmospheric effects, glorious light and sumptuous warmth of his canvases. In early 1999, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston paid $1.25 million for a Heade portrait of magnolias arrayed on a velvet ground. For years the painting had been used to cover a hole in the wall of a house in Indiana. Art historian Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has organized the most comprehensive exhibition of the painter's work ever mounted. On view at the Boston museum through January 17, the show will go on to Washington's National Gallery of Art and to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition reveals the full range of this idiosyncratic artist's particular genius. Included are seascapes and landscapes, paintings of hummingbirds and the tropics, and "portraits" of flowers. Together they represent, according to Stebbins, perhaps the most varied body of work by any 19th-century American painter.

Thunderstorms: A Recipe
is a lesson is about thunderstorms with a humorous approach. The lesson is based around the idea that a thunderstorm is part of a weather "menu", so cooking and eating terms are used when explaining thunderstorms. For example, thunderstorms are compared to pies, and a severe thunderstorm is referred to as a "thunderstorm a la mode". The lesson explains the forces that cause thunderstorms, including convection and updrafts. It also explains the three main stages of a thunderstorm, and what makes a severe thunderstorm different from a normal thunderstorm. Finally, the lesson explains thunderstorm watches and warnings, and safety rules for a thunderstorm. There are several links in the lesson that will let students visit other web sites that are related to thunderstorms. Among the links are the National Weather Service, the National Severe Storms Prediction Center, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
