    The meeting will cover a range of topics in the area of Vector Bundles on Algebraic Curves with special emphasis on moduli spaces and topology. The workshop is intended expecially for young researchers, both as participants and speakers. We aim to have an informal and cooperative atmosphere and allow plenty of time for discussion.
    Main Speakers
    If you wish to give a talk, please say so when you register and include title and abstract. If necessary, the Scientific Committee will make a selection from the talks offered on the basis of the abstracts. Proposals for talks on any aspect of vector bundles on algebraic curves are welcome. We would especially like to encourage young researchers to submit abstracts for talks and will include as many as possible of these in the final programme. The standard length of a talk will be 50 minutes; if you wish to offer a shorter talk, please say so in your application.

    A Satellite Conference of ICM 2002, Beijing (Second Announcement) Time: August 12 16, 2002 Location: Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, CHINA In conjunction with the next International Congress of Mathematicians (Beijing, 8/2028, 2002), we are organizing a week-long Conference in Geometric Topology as one of its satellite conferences. It will be held during the week before ICM 2002, at Shaanxi Normal University in the historic city XI'AN in northwest China, with support coming from various sources including the National Science Foundation of China. This Conference in Geometric Topology is aimed at reflecting the current state of the art in the study of low dimensional topology and related subjects.     Ohm , Calvin College's Beowulf cluster supercomputer, is a three-year project sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation program (grant #0079739). The purpose of Ohm is twofold: to measure the effect of different network topologies on the efficiency of various supercomputer applications, and to provide Calvin's scientific faculty with an advanced computing platform upon which to execute discipline-specific intensive computational jobs.

    Topology is the mathematical study of properties of objects which are preserved through deformations, twistings, and stretchings. (Tearing, however, is not allowed.) A circle is topologically equivalent to an ellipse (into which it can be deformed by stretching) and a sphere is equivalent to an ellipsoid . Continuing along these lines, the space of all positions of the minute hand on a clock is topologically equivalent to a circle (where space of all positions means "the collection of all positions"). Similarly, the space of all positions of the minute and hour hands is equivalent to a torus . The space of all positions of the hour, minute and second hands form a four-dimensional object that cannot be visualized quite as simply as the former objects since it cannot be placed in our three-dimensional world, although it can be visualized by other means. There is more to topology, though. Topology began with the study of curves, surfaces, and other objects in the plane and three-space. One of the central ideas in topology is that spatial objects like circles and spheres can be treated as objects in their own right, and knowledge of objects is independent of how they are "represented" or "embedded" in space.
