PHARMACY - A HEALTH SCIENCE " I Vow to devote my professional life to the service of mankind through the profession of pharmacy...." T hus begins the Pharmacist's Oath - a vow repeated by hundreds of pharmacy graduates each year throughout the nation. As the nations' most accessible health care professional, pharmacists are called upon countless times each day to provide life-saving medications; relief from suffering; and drug-related information to patients, other health care professionals, and the public. As such, pharmacists are a vital part of a medical care process, committed to optimizing public health. Throughout history the challenge of pharmacy has been the discovery, formulation, manufacture, and distribution of medicines along with information on their safe and efficacious use. The ancient apothecary, the frontier "druggist", and the modern pharmacist have all contributed to the realization of the common goals of restoring health, relieving suffering, and preventing disease. Recognition of the pharmacist's vital service role in society and the high ethical standards of the profession have been repeatedly affirmed by national opinion polls in which the public has been asked to rate the various professions on the basis of honesty and ethics and their contributions to the good of mankind.

Administration Bioavailability Excretion ... FDA How does an aspirin cure a headache? How do ulcer medicines decrease stomach acidity ? These are the types of questions that are addressed by the science of pharmacology. Historically, the roots of pharmacology go back to ancient civilizations that used plants and plant extracts as treatments and as poisons. Pharmacology investigates the mechanisms by which drugs act on living systems. Scientists that specialize in pharmacology are pharmacologists. They integrate the information of many scientific disciplines including chemistry cell biology and physiology in order to solve drug and chemical-related problems that affect human health. A working knowledge of pharmacology is also important to the practice of all medical professionals including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dentists and veterinarians. Pharmacology coursework is required for each of these disciplines.
Pharmacology is often confused with pharmacy. Pharmacy focuses on the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of drugs. Pharmacists frequently assist physicians in drug selection and monitoring. They do not determine the mechanism by which a drug or toxin acts, but they utilize the information that is provided by pharmacologists.
