Mission
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-information Management (PGM) deals with a closely linked set of interests fields. PGM holds part of the expertise and competence in:
  • Urban Planning : The whole management cycle (planning/decision making - implementation - operational management and maintenance) of urban development (human activities, spatial form, land use, buildings, infrastructures, services, governance arrangements).
In this domain, Urban Infrastructure (physical infrastructure, transportation, public services) will be a main focus area.
Regional Planning deals with comprehensive development policies and governance arrangements for sub-national territorial units, integrating socio-economic, environmental and natural resource issues. Planning relates both to strategic policy issues and operational action plans.

Zorica Nedovic SCOPE AND DESCRIPTION OF THE APPLICATION CHALLENGE Planning is a future-oriented activity that links "scientific and technical knowledge to actions in the public domain" (Friedmann 1987, page 38). It happens through a public discourse between all groups and individuals interested in and/or affected by urban development and management activities pursued by the public or private sector. Urban and regional planning agencies are rich and dynamic arenas where many societal problems and solutions are explored and addressed in a direct and tangible way. Urban growth; unemployment and economic revitalization; transportation; environmental degradation and protection; neighborhood decline and redevelopment; historic preservation; provision of open space, parks, and recreational facilities; and conservation of land and natural resources are examples of such problems and solutions. Planning-related decisions are made daily through a complex, often politically charged process involving plurality of interests. Moreover, the implementation of those decisions makes a long-term imprint on the urban structure, functionality, and quality of life in urban environments. While most of urban and regional planning happens at the local level, planning activities are often influenced by national and state policies and legislation.

The sustainable management of our cities and regions is one of the most pressing issues in the 21st century. Urban and regional planners are at the forefront of this challenge: working in government and the private sector to guide urban and regional change and to manage the social, environmental, and economic impacts of development. Specialist planners work in fields such as urban design, heritage conservation, and housing policy.
The core units of study in this program are listed below. There is also flexibility to study areas of specific interest to each student, by selecting from the range of options offered through the program, or by selecting electives from any graduate program in this prospectus or from other relevant programs at the University of Sydney. Students may also elect to specialise by combining their planning degree with a related discipline offered by the Faculty (Urban Design, Housing Studies, or Heritage Conservation). Nicole Gurran - program coordinator
Some programs do not offer sufficient units of study to offer the Graduate Certificate full time. Please check with the Student Admissions Advisor (lesley@arch.usyd.edu.au or 6129351 2686) before applying for entry into the Graduate Certificate

70. Center For Urban & Regional Planning
The Center's objectives are to advance research and to aid public policymakerswith regard to urban and regional planning and development.
http://architecture.technion.ac.il/research/urs/

Overview
The Klutznick Center for Urban and Regional Studies was the first of its kind in Israel. The Center's objectives are to advance research and to aid public policymakers with regard to urban and regional planning and development. It was established in 1969 by the late Prof. Moshe (Morris) Hill. In 1989 the Center was endowed by Mr. Philip M. Klutznick, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and a well-known real estate developer, who is interested in development issues in Israel. The Center is located in the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. The Center's researchers include experts in the fields of national and regional planning, land use planning, economic development, social planning, environmental psychology, housing, urban renewal, transportation, planning law, landscape architecture and environmental aspects, urban design, modeling simulations and computer applications in planning the built environment. The pioneering work of the Center's researchers has paved the way for the growth of the field of planning in Israel. Some examples include: the first Israeli environmental impact statement - the siting of the Hadera power plant; work on Israeli development towns; planning in the Arab sector; a guidebook on planning of public services which is used extensively by public officials and by private planners; a comprehensive evaluation study of neighborhood rehabilitation in Israel; housing studies; resident participation in planning; psychological aspects of human behavior in the built environment; research on environmental quality and open spaces; private entrepreneurial initiatives and public economic development; and analysis of the legal aspects of planning and land development.

Therefore, further research and policy development in the following areas would enhance the application of planning support systems and tools: education and technology transfer; database building, maintenance, and access; standardization; and legal issues. Courses of Instruction
The School of Urban and Regional Planning is heir to a long and distinguished history of planning education at the University of Southern California. One of the first planning courses in the United States was offered at USC in 1921. Collaborative scholarship by USC faculty from various disciplines produced influential studies in urban growth and form, urban management systems and gaming simulation during the formative stages of the field. The first of several master's degrees was established in 1955, and the present school was created in 1974 as the first independent School of Urban and Regional Planning in the United States. The planning and development programs at USC are among the most diverse and wide-ranging in higher education. This is made possible by the broad interests of the school's faculty, its linkages with other faculties on campus to conduct joint studies and dual degree programs, and the many degree options, emphases and specializations available to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate study.
