Research Expertise: Vertebrate Zoology
Vertebrate Zoology research includes taxonomic, systematic, evolutionary, biogeographical, conservation and ecological work on vertebrates (animals with a vertebral column and skull). Vertebrate research at the Canadian Museum of Nature focuses primarily on ichthyology (Canadian and Middle Eastern fishes, freshwater fishes, lampreys, flatfishes and the cod family), but research is also being done on amphibians and reptiles. Nature also does zooarchaeological research on bones from archaeological sites.

The majority of our holdings are in the form of skins (flat and round), supplemented by skeletons, wet stored, egg shells, and tissue samples. Tissue Loan Policy I.) Introduction The Department of Ornithology at the American Museum of Natural History maintains a collection of tissue samples. The Department wishes to treat the use of this collection as it does use of other expendable collections, such as anatomical specimens stored in alcohol, namely, with an open policy of reciprocal loans to similar institutions that maintain collections and promote specimen-based research. However, the Department recognizes that many potential users of tissue samples are not associated with museums. Consequently, it is prepared to loan tissue samples to non-traditional users of specimens in circumstances in which the researchers have important research projects underway and in which those researchers are sympathetic to collection-based research and the continuing need for maintenance, improvement, and additions to museum collections. Most tissue samples in the Department of Ornithology have been acquired in association with specific research projects initiated by and continuing in the laboratories of active members of the curatorial staff. Only a portion of the Department’s tissue holdings were obtained as a result of general collecting. Consequently, not all tissues will be available to borrowers, and tissue samples will be loaned only upon evaluation of the project for which the samples are requested. Unlike some preparations of birds, tissue samples are eventually used up; thus, it is the responsibility of the curatorial staff to conserve tissue and ensure its wise usage.

More than 30 years ago, in late autumn 1967, the famous Upper Palaeolithic mammoth site Kraków Spadzista Street (B) was accidentally discovered. The site is located close to the centre of old Kraków, about 2 km from Wawel castle and Market Square at the bottom of Saint Bronislawa hill. On this hill, two other archaeological sites are also present: Kraków - Zwierzyniec (Middle and Upper Palaeolithic) and Kraków - Brzoskwinia. Map of the St. Bronis³awa hill with the location of Palaeolithic sites Kraków Spadzista Street (B) is associated with five other Upper Palaeolithic sites, all situated within about 100 m of each other on a rocky prominence overlooking the Rudawa Valley (47 meters above the valley). This prominence is isolated from the main part of Saint Bronislawa hill by a rocky cliff from the north and by a large Pleistocene depression from the east and west. Plan of the Kraków Spadzista Upper Palaeolithic complex Excavations at site B were undertaken in two stages. The first study of this site was conducted in the years 1968 - 1971. From 1973 - 1989, other sites from the Spadzista Street complex were studied. In 1989, fieldwork began at a location situated a few meters to the southwest from trench B. This new trench was designated B1. Following work between 1989-2000, we can say that trench B and B1 together form one assemblage of mammoth bones, which is estimated to extend past the areas uncovered during excavations.

The Division of Vertebrate Zoology is staffed by Arthur R. Clark The recent acquisition of two transferred collections will significantly increase the size of the above mentioned collections. The Dr. R. C. Bothner Collection (over 950 jars of reptiles and amphibians) from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, will enhance our herpetological coverage of southwestern New York State. The Dr. J. J. Reedy Collection (over 700 study skins, fluid-preserved specimens and skeletons) from Niagara University includes a number of mammal study skins from Niagara County. Our fish collection is of considerable significance to the importance of Great Lakes water resources, local fisheries and environmental water quality studies. In the past we received the Dr. W. F. Hadley Collection, a large (approx. 1100 jars) collection of fish from the State University of New York at Buffalo and smaller collections of voucher specimens from the Corps of Engineers. The Department of Vertebrate Zoology is your local resource for helping you learn about and enjoy the environment around us.
The Museum originally was founded as The Museum of Comparative Oology in 1916 and these same collections are housed within the Vertebrate Zoology Department. Historic collections contain specimens from as early as 1849 and have grown to a regional collection of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and eggs, and mammals containing over 40,000 specimens!
The Department is always active preparing, cataloging and archiving specimens within our collections, while overseeing the animals in the exhibits. As a public resource, we value our role in answering public queries and helping scientists, students, and the private sector utilize our collections for research. The staff scientists conduct both contracted and personal research. focus. We do do some dissections - Necturus, pigeons, rats, perch, dogfish.
