The following is a list of potentially useful resources for research in Vertebrate Zoology. In almost all cases many other titles are available by searching relevant words in the Wilson Library's online catalog , or by performing intelligent Internet searches . The examples listed here are felt to be the most inclusive and relevant we have found thus far, or in some cases (handbooks, surveys) serve as examples of what exists. Atlases Bibliographies

Trent University BI 211H VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY Winter 2003Course Syllabus
This course examines vertebrate comparative anatomy from an evolutionary perspective. The lectures will provide an overview of vertebrate classes and basic components of the vertebrate body, emphasizing adaptations between organism and the environment as modified through evolution. Laboratory sessions will provide the opportunity to familiarize yourselves with features of the main vertebrate classes and to examine and compare the major organ systems and morphological adaptations of various vertebrates.

Classes Amphibia Reptilia Aves Mammalia group anamniota

    Adaptations
    • Living Endoskeleton Advantages
      • Growth - can grow with the body, thus allowing very large size and nearly unlimited body size. Jointed scaffolding for muscles - provides jointed attachment structure for muscles which in turn support, protect, and cushion the skeleton.
      Composition
    • Cartilage
      • translucent elastic tissue; the basic form is called hyaline cartilage which has a clear, glassy appearance; is composed of cartilage cells called chondrocytes surrounded by a firm, complex protein gel interlaced with a meshwork of collagen protein fibers. The endoskeleton of some spp. is composed exclusively of cartilage.
      Bone
      • living tissue having significant deposits of inorganic calcium salts laid down as an extracellular matrix.

    Vertebrate Zoology Syllabus
    General Information
Welcome to Vertebrate Zoology. I expect students to attend every class (you'll get the most for your money this way as well). The text must be purchased and the suggested reading should be done prior to that lecture topic.
The objective of this course is to instill an understanding of the evolution of vertebrate life, as well as a clearer understanding of how to do science. Doing science requires a distinct kind of thinking. Hopefully, you will all finish the course with a deeper sense of the profundity of evolution and a scientific approach to problem-solving.
We will examine the evolutionary past of vertebrates, and the evolutionary relationships of living vertebrates. Part of the course will focus on anatomy, especially as regards adaptation or function within unique ecological niches. We will also examine the natural history and some physiology of example organisms of the different classes of vertebrates.
The labs will be a combination of observation, drawing, note-taking, dissection, and field trips (see course outline below).

    PRE-REQUISITE(S)
    RATIONALE:
A knowledge of the zoology of vertebrate animals and practical experience in identifying and dissecting these are fundamental to the education of an animal biologist.
    SYNOPSIS:
As humans are vertebrates we have a special interest in this subphylum of the Phylum Chordata. Topics include the classification and natural history of the Urochordata, Cephalochordata Agnatha, Chondrichthyes, Osteichthyes, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia, together with comparative study of major organ systems.
    OBJECTIVES:
On completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate:
  • an understanding of the classification, morphology, anatomy, function and life-style of vertebrate animals;

    http://www.oeb.harvard.edu/faculty/crompton/
A.W. Crompton Fisher Professor of Natural History Museum of Comparative Zoology Harvard University MCZ Labs 204 26 Oxford Street Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138
In studies of the masticatory system in recent and fossil vertebrates, Professor Crompton's laboratory uses cinefluoroscopy, electromyography and in vivo bone stain to determine
  • the order of contraction of all the muscles involved in food processing, oral transport and swallowing,
  • how various types of jaw and tongue movements are achieved and controlled, and
  • how forces are generated.
These studies involve occlusal patterns of the teeth of living and fossil mammals and reptiles.
The lab is exploring the relationship between bone structure and remodeling that results from normal activity and growth in several vertebrate groups.
The laboratory is also investigating the fossil record of mammals and reptiles in an attempt to explain the anatomical and physiological changes associated with the transition from reptiles to mammals on the one hand, and from reptiles to dinosaurs and birds on the other hand.
