25. All The Virology On The WWW
Information about viruses and infectious disease. With over 4,000 links, tutorials, viral images, and other information, this site is gold mine for anyone interested in learning more about viruses.

All the Virology on the WWW
seeks to be the best single site for Virology information on the Internet. We have collected all the virology related Web sites that might be of interest to our fellow virologists, and others interested in learning more about viruses. Additionally, we have created an index to virus pictures on the web, The Big Picture Book of Viruses , which also functions as a resource for viral taxonomy. A collection of some of the best Online Virology and Microbiology Course Notes available can also be found here. If you're interested in even more information, we have The Virology Bookshop , an on-line microbiology and virology bookstore with a significant discount for our users. It is our hope that this site will provide both the professional virologist and the general public with access to information about viruses. Over the past several years, these pages have grown to encompass something of interest for everyone. The lists of virology related sites are divided into multiple pages, all of which are accessible from this page and from the more descriptive Complete Table of Contents . We even provide links to Virology Dictionaries if you're confused by some of this site's more technical content. These sites are listed without bias and with as much organization as we can muster.

Welcome to the WWW Virtual Library:
This section of the Virtual Library is devoted to the science, practice, and application of microbiology and virology. Subjects covered include culture collections, databases, educational sites, journals, government and regulatory sites, images, medical microbiology, university departments, virology, protista, and references to newsgroups, Email lists, and other resources for the microbiologist. All links in this Virtual Library section will be checked on at least a quarterly basis. The last complete check of the links was July 7, 2001 Today's date is:
This section is maintained by Scott Sutton , and supported by The Microbiology Network . Requests concerning the WWW Virtual Library Project in general should be e-mailed to the WWW coordinators at www-request@mail.w3.org . The World-Wide Web Virtual Library Project is part of the W3 effort coordinated by CERN, who provides an overview of the library. We wish to acknowledge the support of our sponsors

27. Haemolytic Anaemia Testing
Tests to check for the presence of hemolytic anemia.
http://www.uq.edu.au/vdu/HDUHaemolyticAnaemiaTests.htm

Human Metapneumovirus Links
Haemolytic Anaemia Testing To check for the presence of any haemolytic anaemia the following test may be performed: Haematology Profile (FBC/FBE)
  • Should demonstrate an anaemia
Blood Film
  • Schistocytes
    • Products of RBC breakdown
    • Suggests intravascular haemolysis (IVH)
  • Microspherocytes
    • Intra/Extravascular haemolysis (IVH/EVH)
    • A hallmark of haemolytic anaemia (HA)
  • Polychromasia (IVH/EVH)
  • Nucleated Red Blood Cells (IVH/EVH)
  • Erythroid hyperplasia is more pronounced than in HA than in non-HA (Dec. M:E)
  • Noticeable that the lifespan of RBCs from a patient with an intrinsic RBC defect, when infused into a normal patient, are decreased. Normal RBCs infused into a patient with an intrinsic RBC defect do not haemolyse.
Osmotic Fragility Test (OFT)
  • A measure of the RBCs resistance to haemolysis by osmotic stress, depending primarily on the volume of the cell, the surface area and the cell's membrane function
  • RBCs are incubated in varying concentrations of a hypotonic solution of sodium chloride (NaCl)
  • As the concentration of NaCl decreases, cells take on water to produce osmotic equilibrium

28. Megaloblastic Anaemia
Haematological profile, diagnosis and treatment of megaloblastic anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency and frolic acid deficiency.
http://www.uq.edu.au/vdu/HDUAnaemiaMegaloblastic.htm

Human Metapneumovirus Links
Megaloblastic Anaemia Diagnosis
  • Many cases are seen that have a decreased serum B12 with a normal haematological profile and possibly normal clinical findings
  • Test for methylmalonic acid in the serum as an indicator of vitB12 deficiency
  • Test for homocysteine to check folate levels
Haematological Profile
  • Hb/RCC/Hct - Dec (due to Dec. DNA production)
  • MCV/MCH - Inc. (As precursors are megaloblastic)
  • MCHC - Normal
  • RDW - Inc. (Anisocytosis due to microcytes, normocytes and oval macrocytes)
  • Plt./WCC - Dec
  • Pancytopaenia with a normochromic, macrocytic anaemia
  • Intramedullary haemolysis due to ineffective erythropoiesis (reason for hypercellular BM)
  • Poikilocytosis - ++ (tear drops and schistocytes)
  • Anisocytosis - +++ (oval macrocytes)
    • A "Shift-to-the-Left" indicates an Inc. in band form WBCs
  • Hypercellular bone marrow (M:E at 1:1 or reversed)
  • Erythron
    • Large cells with fine chromatin (Megaloblasts)
    • Nuclear(N)/Cytoplasmic(C) dissociation with N lagging C - normal cytoplasmic maturation
    • Multiple Howell-Jolly bodies (diagnostic if observed)
  • Leucon
    • Giant myelocytes and metamyelocytes
  • Thrombon
    • Often not obvious
  • The peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) findings do not distinguish between a vitamin B12/cobalamin deficiency and a folic acid (folate) deficiency

Glossary of Virology:
NB: You can search this document using the FIND command from the EDIT menu.
(+)sense RNA (plus-sense RNA): A virus with a single-stranded RNA genome of the same polarity ('sense') as mRNA. (-)sense RNA (minus-sense RNA): A virus with a single-stranded RNA genome of the opposite polarity ('sense') as mRNA. Abortive Infection: When a virus infects a cell (or host), but cannot complete the full replication cycle, i.e. a non-productive infection. Acute Infection: Relatively brief infections, i.e. a few days to a few weeks, following which the virus is usually eliminated completely from the body by the immune system. 'Arboviruses': A large a diverse group of viruses, taxonomically unrelated which are classically transmitted by arthropod vectors, e.g. mosquitoes, ticks, etc. Assembly: The stage of replication during which all the structural components come together at one site in the cell and the basic structure of the virus particle is formed. Attachment: The binding of a virus particle to a specific receptor on the surface of a host cell. Capsid: A protein shell comprising the main structural unit of a virus particle.

SOCIETY INFORMATION
The Pan American Society for Clinical Virology (PASCV) was founded in 1977 as the Pan American Group for Rapid Viral Diagnosis (PAG-RVD). It was founded to help raise the standards of diagnostic virology in the Americas as the European Group for Rapid Viral Diagnosis had done elsewhere. The name was changed in 1995 to reflect the expanding role of the society in all areas of clinical virology, including diagnostics, manifestations of viral diseases and viral pathogenesis, prevention of and therapy for viral diseases and the improved understanding of all of these. The PASCV sponsors symposia, workshops and annual awards in clinical virology. Currently 2 awards are presented annually. The Clinical Virology Award (sponsored by Bion Enterprises) and the Diagnostic Virology Award (sponsored by Becton Dickinson). The Society also provides several $600 travel grants, including the Mario Escobar Award, to the Annual Clinical Virology Symposium for students, postdoctoral fellows or technologists who submit abstracts to the meeting.

40. Theoretical Biology Program, Institute For Advanced Study
The Program in Theoretical Biology has many diverse interests, including immunology and virology, the evolution of language, evolutionary genomics, epidemiology, the evolution of cancer and the evolution of cooperation and fairness.
