    Site Desciption It is a fact that Hawaii has been estimated to have less than 10% of their wetlands remaining today! Unfortunately, one of the wetland that has vanished over a period of 300 years, is one that is located right in our community, Kaelepulu Pond. Kaelepulu Pond was once a thriving wetland filled with native wildlife. It was also known as one of the few natural freshwater fishpond in the state of Hawaii. All of this has vanished and what is left is a polluted pond which is now called Enchanted Lake. ?Why are Hawaii?s Wetlands Vanishing is an interactive website filled with dynamic graphics, animations, sounds, video clips, and a learning center of interactive activities. It takes the viewers on a journey back to the past when the wetland was a thriving marshland and then completes its journey to present day. You will virtually see the changes that affected the habitat and wildlife of Kaelepulu Pond.

    wetlands Introduction. wetlands is the collective term for marshes, swamps, bogs,and similar areas. wetlands are important features in watershed management.
    http://h2osparc.wq.ncsu.edu/info/wetlands/intro.html
    Wetlands Introduction "Wetlands" is the collective term for marshes, swamps, bogs, and similar areas. Wetlands are found in flat vegetated areas, in depressions on the landscape, and between water and dry land along the edges of streams, rivers, lakes, and coastlines. Wetland areas can be found in nearly every county and climatic zone in the United States. Inland wetlands receive water from precipitation, ground water and/or surface water. Coastal and estuarine wetlands receive water from precipitation, surface water, tides, and/or ground water. Surface water sources include runoff and stormwater. Since the 1600s, more than half of the original wetlands in the lower 48 states have been destroyed. Twenty two states have lost at least 50 percent of their original wetlands. Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Ohio have lost more than 80 percent of their original wetlands and California and Iowa have lost nearly ninety-nine (99 percent) percent. Since the 1970s, the most extensive losses of wetlands have occurred in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Wetlands have been drained and converted to farmland, filled for housing developments and industrial facilities, and used as receptacles for waste. Human activities continue to adversely affect wetland ecosystems.

    Research ecologists at NWRC study causes and loss of threatened coastal ecosystems, and investigate how to stabilize, restore, and manage the coastal landscape. Inland grass beds and seagrass beds (some of the most valuable of fish nursery grounds, waterfowl foods, and beach stabilizers) are being diminished worldwide; barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico will suffer if their seagrasses are lost. Coastal saltwater and freshwater marshes are particularly endangered in Louisiana with losses of 90-130 square kilometers (35-50 square miles) a year. Coastal prairies in Texas and Louisiana have had dramatic losses with only about 1% of the original vast acreage remaining. Ecology Division
    Western Environment's Ecology Division is dedicated to finding realistic, practical solutions to complicated ecological problems such as endangered species and wetlands. The key to working successfully with regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Army Corps of Engineers, is to identify and address natural resource regulatory issues early on in any project design. Western Environment and Ecology can assist with this process by inspecting and identifying probable environmental conflicts and helping you resolve them. Money spent early in the planning process will usually save you money in the long run.

    Wetlands are transitional lands between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is often covered by shallow water during some parts of the year. Wetlands can be categorized according to specific habitat and type of vegetation. In general, wetlands are divided into:
      Saltwater and brackish water marshes, which are usually located in coastal areas;
      Freshwater wetlands, which are primarily in the inland areas of California; and
      Freshwater forested and scrub wetlands, which are commonly referred to as riparian habitat.

    Wetlands come in all shapes and sizes. They occur in every state, from the coastal marshes of Alaska to the mangrove forests of Florida. Some are dry on the surface most of the year and others remain saturated or even inundated. There are two main categories of wetlands - coastal and inland. Coastal wetlands occur near the ocean and are closely linked with estuaries, where sea water mixes with fresh water. Inland wetlands occur everywhere from plains to mountain tops. How are wetlands different from estuaries? Some wetlands exist along the coast, like estuaries, but they can also exist inland. Here are some types of wetlands:
    • Bogs - Also known as peatlands, bogs are made of peat partially decomposed remains of plants and animals. Bogs are found in colder regions of the world where the temperatures and limited oxygen in the water discourage the breakdown of organic material.
    • Fens - a type of freshwater marsh, fens are peat-forming wetlands that receive nutrients from sources other than precipitation. Unlike bogs, fens are not acidic and can support a more diverse plant and animal community. Like bogs, fens are found in northern regions.

    A fen (Photo: US EPA)
    • Freshwater marshes - 90 percent of our nation's wetlands. They are open areas, usually with few trees and shrubs. The water in a marsh fluctuates, rising during the rainy season and disappearing during dry periods. Some of these wetlands occur in suburban and urban areas where they help purify storm water and reduce flooding.
