Our playground, the rural Waianae Coast of Oahu, offers many different kinds of marine life including dolphins, whales, turtles, tropical fish, spotted eagle rays, sponges, and coral reef inhabitants just to name a few. The Waianae Range is on the west coast of Oahu, Hawaii. It is largely shielded from the rains brought into the islands by the Northeasterly bearing trade winds by its neighbor, Koolau Volcano. This makes Waianae much drier than the Koolaus, particularly on its westward (leeward) slopes. This dryness keeps runoff to a minimum and thus, some of the clearest water in Hawaii is found at the beaches of the Waianae coast. This area is also reputed to have the most extensive coral reefs in the state. It's not surpirsing then that there is fascinating marine life all along the Leeward Coast. The Northwestern tip, at Ka'ena Point appears to be a magnet for marine mammals. We are currently conducting research to determine the extent of this phenomenon. Orcinus orca Root Meanings Orcinus may be from the Latin orca for "a kind of whale," or from the Latin orcynus for "a kind of tunny," referring to the species' resemblance to tuna or to its habit of preying on them. Other common names : whale killer, sea wolf, orca, blackfish. The term "killer" is derived from the fact that this whale attacks and consumes warm-blooded, as well as cold-blooded, animals. Early fisherman called them whale killers, and some time in history this name was reversed and became killer whale. Welcome to Whale Songs , an educational center about people and whales. It is an evolving resource, encouraging communication among researchers, students, educators and whale lovers worldwide. Join us in the field on January 2000, as a team of high school ecology students from Saucon Valley, Pennsylvania, and the Whale Songs team, along with some friends, travel to the Island of Dominica on a mission to study the island's ecological treasures, which go beyond it richness as the habitat of 14 cetaceans! Be sure to visit the site each day between January 18 and January 21, 2000 to participate in daily discussions about the team's findings!
Whale Songs was selected as a valuable Internet resource for Discovery Channel School's H2Oceans theme for spring 1997.

51. Tour Of WWII Russian Battlefields In Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad And Kursk WWI
Travel agency information on fully escorted tour of WW2 battlefields in Russia including Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk.
http://www.threeWhales.ru/t7.htm
D uring the tour you will visit the four cities where the most important battles of the Great Patriotic War (W.W.II) took place in the eastern front. For the Soviet Union the war began on June 22, 1941.
MOSCOW was to have a key role in this devastating war, but the initial German plans concentrated on the destruction of the Red Army, and the offensive against Moscow. By the beginning of December some German Nazi formations were only about forty km north west of the Moscow Kremlin.
STALINGRAD (now Volgograd) is a place of fierce and decisive battle which is considered by Russians a turning point in the W.W.II.
The city was totally destroyed in the battle.
KURSK. The battle near Kursk is known as the biggest tank battle in the history of mankind. The Nazi armies could not recover after this defeat.
TOUR GOAL. The tour is addressed to all people interested in learning more about the Second World War or the Great Patriotic War as Russians call it.
We have included the major cities where the biggest battles of the War took place. Some non military museums we also included. These are the museums which one can not but visit being in Russia such as Kremlin, Hermitage. We did this combination because we strongly think that culture is part of the national character which helped Russian together with the allies to win the Second World War.

We have three groups of the Battlefield tour in season 2003. All three trips are different according to the time, itinerary and visited cities. Click the day to choose your tour.

http://www.whaletimes.org/whagray.htm
Fishin' for Facts: Gray Whales
Common name: Pacific gray whale
Scientific name: Eschrichtius robustus
©WhaleTimes
Size
Female gray whales reach lengths up to 45 feet and weigh as much as 70,000 lb. Males are slightly smaller. At birth calves are approximately 15 feet long.
Where are they found?
Gray whales spend the summer in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. Gray whales, like most other baleen whales, migrate to warmer waters during the winter months. The eastern Pacific stock of gray whales travels along the coast of the US and Mexico
During this annual migration, a gray whale can travel as far as 6,000 miles each way. Pregnant females travel to the lagoons to give birth and raise the calf. The lagoons are protected from the open ocean - currents and predators. Others may travel to warmer waters or to find mates. Scientists have found that not all whales travel to the lagoons during the winter. Some may travel a portion of the way, some may not at all.
What do they eat?
Gray whales are benthic feeders. That means they search for food on the bottom of the ocean. They eat tiny shrimp-like animals like amphipods and other bottom-dwelling animals.

National Wildlife Federation film about whales, narrated by Patrick Stewart.
    http://www.nwf.org/productions/whales.html
Home Contact Us Search Conservation ... Get Outdoors
Whales The first giant screen film from the National Wildlife Federation, Whales melds a stunning combination of art and science to give audiences a fresh, new perspective on these mysterious marine mammoths. Filmed in IMAX®, the production captures the wonder of being among whales, and results in what critics have called a "breathtaking," and "dazzling poetic experience." Actor Patrick Stewart , best known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," narrates. Traveling through the coastal waters of Alaska, Newfoundland, California, Patagonia, Hawaii, and Columbia, the film has captured the amazing grace of whales and offers surprising insights into their lives. Encounter up-close a creature whose heart is the size of a small car and contains blood vessels large enough for a child to crawl through. Find out how humpback whales create bubble nets to capture food. Come eye-to-eye with killer whale clans as they use various techniques to locate and trap prey. Learn how right whales hold their tails up to "sail" on gentle ocean breezes. And encounter a myriad of other aquatic life, including giant manta ray. Following blue, humpback, orca, right whales, and dolphins, viewers discover how the underwater dimension of sound influences all aspects of a whale's existence. The watery world of these huge animals is dominated by sound rippling through the vast corridors of oceanic cathedrals. To whales, these vocalizations are not only a means of communication, but also of survival. Sound guides whales on their long migrations, helps them attract mates, challenges competitors, and assists them with organizing hunting activities.
