Niels Henrik Abel At the age of 13, Abel along with his older brother, was sent to the Cathedral school in Christiania (Oslo). In 1817, his mathematics teacher was Bernt Michael Holmbe, who was seven years older than Abel. Holmbe recognized Abel's talent and started giving him special problems and recommended special books outside the curriculum. Abel and Holmbe read the calculus text of Euler and the work of Lagrange and Laplace. Soon Abel became familiar with most of the important mathematical literature. Abel's father died when he was 18 years old and the responsibility of supporting the family fell on his shoulders. He gave private lessons and did odd jobs. However, he continued to carry out his mathematical research. Abel, in his last year of school, attacked the problem of the solvability of the quintic equation, a problem that had been unsettled since the sixteenth century. Abel thought that he had solved the problem and submitted his work for publication. Unable to find an error and understand his arguments, he was asked by the editor to illustrate his method. In 1824, during the process of illustration he discovered an error. This discovery led Abel to a proof that no such solution exists. He also worked on elliptic functions and in essence revolutionized the theory of elliptic functions. He traveled to Paris and Berlin in order to find a teaching position. Then poverty took its toll, and Abel died from tuberculosis on April 6, 1829. Two days later a letter from Crelle reached his address, conveying the news of his appointment to the professorship of mathematics at the University of Berlin.

Niels Henrik Abel

  • About the Abel-contest
The Niels Henrik Abel mathematical contest started in 1980 as a contest in mathematical problem solving for high school pupils. It was named after the world famous Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel who proved that the polynomial equation of degree five may not be solved using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and roots. Today, the contest consists of two rounds before the final. (The second round before the final was introduced in 1994-95. Before that, there was only one round before the final.) In the first round, the contestants are given 20 multiple choice problems, each with 5 choices. These are to be answered within 100 minutes. There is given 5 points per correct answer, 1 point per unanswered problem, and no points for false answers. Hence, if answers are picked at random, the expected score will be the same as if unanswered: 20 points. Tha maximum score is 100. The best 10% procede to the second round. Here, 10 problems are to be solved within 100 minutes. The answer to each problem is a 3-digit integer (0-999). 10 points are awarded for each correct answer, so that the maximum score is 100.

Niels Abel 's life was dominated by poverty and we begin by putting this in context by looking briefly at the political problems which led to economic problems in Norway. At the end of the 18th century Norway was part of Denmark and the Danish tried to remain neutral through the Napoleonic wars. However a neutrality treaty in 1794 was considered a aggressive act by England and, in 1801, the English fleet destroyed most of the Danish fleet in a battle in the harbour at Copenhagen. Despite this Denmark-Norway avoided wars until 1807 when England feared that the Danish fleet might be used by the French to invade. Using the philosophy that attack is the best form of defence, the English attacked and captured the whole Danish fleet in October 1807. Denmark then joined the alliance against England. The continental powers blockaded England, and as a counter to this England blockaded Norway. The twin blockade was a catastrophe to Norway preventing their timber exports, which had been largely to Britain, and preventing their grain imports from Denmark. An economic crisis in Norway followed with the people suffering hunger and extreme poverty. In 1813 Sweden attacked Denmark from the south and, at the treaty of Kiel in January 1814, Denmark handed over Norway to Sweden. An attempt at independence by Norway a few months later led to Sweden attacking Norway in July 1814. Sweden gained control of Norway, setting up a complete internal self-government for Norway with a government in Christiania (which is called Oslo today). In this difficult time Abel was growing up in Gjerstad in south-east Norway.
