10.1. Abel, Niels (1802-1829)
IRA Niels Abel was one of the innovators in the field of elliptic functions, discoverer of Abelian functions and one of the leaders in the use of rigor in mathematics. His work was so revolutionary that one mathematician stated: "He has left mathematicians something to keep them busy for five hundred years." However, his life did not mirror his mathematical success and his story is one of the most tragic in the sciences. Abel's first main contribution to mathematics came before entering college. For hundreds of years, mathematicians had searched in vain to discover the general solution for the quintic equation a x + b x + c x + d x + e x + f = . Abel developed what he thought was the answer. Holmboe and Hansteen knew there was no one in Norway with the ability to understand if the answer was correct, so they sent the paper to the mathematician Ferdinand Degen in Denmark. Before receiving an answer, Abel discovered a mistake in his figures and questioned if there was an answer. Taking the tract that there was not, he eventually proved that an algebraic solution to the quintic equation was impossible. More important, however, Degen suggested that Abel take up the subject of elliptic integrals, which would become the focus of his work and the source of his fame. Before entering the University of Oslo in 1821, Abel's father died, leaving his son to support his mother and six siblings. Unable to meet his financial needs, he relied on grants from the university, gifts from his math professors and tutoring positions to keep his family afloat. However, his mathematics flourished. After fulfilling the requirements for graduation in one year, he was left on his own to study. In 1823, he published his first important paper on definite integrals, which included the first ever solutions of an integral equation. He also produced another valuable work on the integration of functions. Both of these works would have brought him instant renown and a professorship if anyone would have read them. Unfortunately, the works were written in Norwegian while the leading mathematicians of Europe wrote in French and German. The papers were ignored.

NIELS HENRIK ABEL (1802-1829)
Norwegian mathematician
NIELS HENRIK ABEL (1802-1829), Norwegian mathematician, was born at Findoe on the 25th of August 1802. In 1815 he entered the cathedral school at Christiania, and three years later he gave proof of his mathematical genius by his brilliant solutions of the original problems proposed by B. Holmboe. About this time, his father, a poor Protestant minister, died, and the family was left in straitened circumstances; but a small pension from the state allowed Abel to enter Christiania University in 1821.
The early death of this talented mathematician, of whom Legendre said ``quelle tete celle du jeune Norvegien!'', cut short a career of extraordinary brilliance and promise. Under Abel's guidance, the prevailing obscurities of analysis began to be cleared, new fields were entered upon and the study of functions so advanced as to provide mathematicians with numerous ramifications along which progress could be made. His works, the greater part of which originally appeared in Crelle's Journal, were edited by Holmbor and published in 1839 by the Swedish government, and a more complete edition by L. Sylow and S. Lie was published in 1881. PageWise makes no representations about the content published on this site. It is provided "as is" and without warranties of any kind. Abel, Niels Henrik

Abel, Niels Henrik (18021829) Abel was the most famous Norwegian mathematician. He read works of Newton d'Alembert Lagrange Laplace , and Euler and became motivated to study mathematics. He attended the University of Christiania and graduated in 1822. During his schooling, he began working on finding a general solution procedure for the roots of cubic equations. He published papers on solving algebraic and integral equations. In 1824, he proved the impossibility of solving general cubic equations. Abel traveled to Berlin and worked with Crelle, who published some of Abel's works and supported his research. Abel also traveled to Paris and met with Cauchy . Cauchy was not very receptive of Abel's work, so Abel returned to Norway. There he suffered from illness, poverty, and considerable personal debt. He died young and never realized the potential that he showed with his brilliant work on functions and solving equations.

    Abel, Niels Henrik
    Norwegian mathematician.
    He demonstrated that the general quintic equation ax5 + bx4 + cx3 + dx2 + ex + f = could not be solved algebraically.
Subsequent work covered elliptic functions, integral equations, infinite series, and the binomial theorem.
In 1823 he provided the first solution in the history of mathematics of an integral equation and published a paper demonstrating that a radical expression to represent a solution to fifth- or higher-degree equations was impossible.
In 1825, Abel went to Berlin, where he met Leopold Crelle (1780-1855), a privy councillor and engineer much taken with problems in mathematics.
Together they brought out the first issue of Crelle's Journal, which was to become the leading 19th-century German organ of mathematics.
It dealt with the sum of the integrals of a given algebraic function and presented the theorem that any such sum can be expressed as a fixed number of these integrals with integration arguments that are algebraic functions of the original arguments.
Abel transformed the theory of elliptic integrals by introducing elliptic functions, and this generalization of trigonometric functions led eventually to the theory of complex multiplication, with its important implications for algebraic number theory.

    Niels Henrik Abel:
    A short but influential life
The only existing authentic portrait of Niels Henrik Abel Norway's best known mathematician, Niels Henrik Abel, died at the age of 26. Despite his short life, he contributed a great deal to his subject and his name is inextricably linked with the world of mathematics. At the age of 13, he moved from Gjerstad in southeast Norway to Christiania [presentday Oslo] and started at the Cathedral School. Excelling in mathematics, he scraped through in the other subjects, showing every sign of being fed up with school. Berlin and beyond Most important work mislaid He arrived in Paris in July 1826, but the stay there was a disappointment. France's most important mathematicians showed little or no interest in meeting this unknown Norwegian. Nevertheless, his time there proved very productive and he wrote a piece on algebraic integrals which was later to be recognised as his masterpiece. In order to be accepted and printed, it had to be assessed by mathematicians at the French Academy of Sciences. Abel waited the entire autumn, but his piece was mislaid. It was not printed until 15 years later, after considerable pressure from the Norwegian government. The person responsible for printing it then stole the manuscript, which remained lost until 1952 when it resurfaced in Florence! The New Year of 1827 saw Abel returning to Crelle in Berlin and then on to Norway in May. In addition to his mathematical work, he took home some continental habits. His friends and colleagues noticed that his clothes were more modern and that he had "learnt some manners".
