The Challenge of the Nineteenth Century
Max Wiener Abraham Geiger gave the Reform Movement in Judaism its intellectual stature and theoretical justification. His struggle against the traditionalists forms an interesting chapter in the history of German Jewry, yet is now of even greater interest to American Jews, for ultimately Geiger found more convinced and ardent followers on this side of the Atlantic than he had had in Europe.

Rabbis who believed in Jesus HOME PAGE Other Rabbis Top of Page Top of Page ... Top of Page Rabbi Max Wertheimer, D.D. Born of Orthodox Jewish parents, my earliest childhood impression was of my parents rising very early in the morning to spend a long time reading the Hebrew prayers. Even in the cold winter, before fires were kindled for their physical comfort, they carried on faithfully these early devotions. Insofar as their knowledge of God was concerned, they were a devout and God-fearing couple. From the age of five to fifteen my training was in a Jewish school, in Orthodox Judaism. A scholarly Hebrew instructed me in the five books of Moses. I went to the Gymnasium for my classical training and was later apprenticed to a manufacturer, doing office work. My associates at that time led me into the sinful pleasures of the world and, although I attended synagogue and read my Hebrew prayers on the Sabbath, I drifted from the faith of my fathers. After finishing the rabbinical course we were publicly ordained and inducted into the rabbinical office. My first call was to Dayton, Ohio, where I officiated as Rabbi for ten years, during which I made many friends and received many tokens of love which I treasure highly. In my Friday evening lectures I spoke on social, industrial and economic questions, monotheism, ethical culture, the moral systems of the Jews, etc. In the Saturday morning addresses I took weekly sections of the Pentateuch, followed by a corresponding section of the prophets. On Sunday I taught Sunday School from eight in the morning until five in the evening with a one hour intermission for dinner.

In the volume we call American history, these events, places, and dates serve as the table of contents. Last month we added a new chapter entitled, "September 11, 2001."
We all know what happened that day. We know we were attacked by a homeless, countryless terrorist. We know that four jets were hi-jacked- three of which hit their intended targets. We know that as many as five thousand people perished, the vast majority of whom were civilians, some of whom were children. We know what happened. But what we continue to wonder is why? And why do they use the language they use? "Holy War." "Martyrdom." "Paradise." These are spiritual terms. Why are they using such language? Why are we considered the infidels? Why are these men willing to give their lives? What does a Muslim millionaire named Osama bin Laden have against us and our children?

    German and NS Terminology
The use of quotation marks denotes nazified or nazi words.
    "Abwanderung"/"migration":

A Nazi euphemism for deportation for so-called racial reasons. The term was used, without quotation marks, by the representatives of the Jewish community, on instructions from the "Aufsichtsbehörde"/ "supervisory authority", a euphemism for the Gestapo. This and other terminology was intentionally used to deceive the deportees. Aktion "Arbeitsscheu Reich":
In June 1938 Jews with previous convictions, which included the most trifling offences, were transported to concentration camps. The total number of such individuals arrested in Hamburg is unknown. At least 41 of these were murdered in connection with the internment in concentration camps or with the later deportation and extermination measures. These 41 individuals are here named:

    * Brecht, K., Friedrich, V., Hermanns, L. M., Kaminer, I. J., Juelich, D. H. (Hg.)
