Adams, Airy and the Discovery of Neptune in 1846
by Allan Chapman
Soon after Neptune was discovered in Berlin, in September 1846, using Le Verrier's Computed position, a furore broke out in Britain about the priority of John Couch Adams. Though Adams's claim had not been advanced until October 1846, when even the English astronomers were still speaking of "Le Verrier's Planet", it came to be realised that Adams had already arrived at a computed position for the Uranus-disturbing planet by the autumn of 1845. Adams, via a letter of introduction from Professor Challis in Cambridge, had applied to Professor George Biddell Airy, the Astronomer Royal for some kind of assistance, though he failed to secure an interview with Airy, and nothing further happened - until the New Planet was discovered in Berlin, nearly a year later. Popular interpretations of this incident place a great deal of responsibility upon Airy, for not having taken the initiative to secure a British discovery. Yet this is unjust, and several key factors must be born in mind:
  • It was not the job of the Astronomer Royal to undertake searches.

A couple of miles down the road the village of Laneast was home to one of the moors most famous sons. John Couch Adams was born in the village where his father was a farmer in 1819. A brilliant scholar he went on to attend Cambridge where he eventually became a Fellow and Tutor at St John's college. Best known now determining the presence of Neptune (work which at the time was ignored) he did however become Professor of Astronomy to many universities and later President of the Astronomical Society. He was offered the position of Astronomer Royal but was too modest to accept and died in 1892 and buried close to Sir Issac Newtons grave in Cambridge.

At one time almost the whole moor would have been forest land but from around 10,000BC small groups of people, who wandered the land hunting and gathering began clearing the area so that animals would be encouraged to graze, and so make hunting easier. Over time the trend of life became more settled and people set up home in groups, hunting and farming the land (circa 2500-600 BC). During the Bronze age most of the area was cleared and clear evidence remains of different aspects of life in this age - fields, farms, burial places and 'ritual sites' (stone rows, circles and standing stones). These early farmers created what we today call fields, these were long strips of land with boundaries of low stony banks known as reaves. They form blocks of land which became a territory or estate for a particular group of people living in a settlement or ‘village’. Inside these banks animals were grazed and crops grown. Dotted around in these fields, which are still visible, are the remains of hut circles which are round dwelling houses where the farmers lived. For well over a thousand years now the moor has been traditionally used for summer grazing of livestock which has overwintered in the enclosed farms adjacent to the moors. The origins of common land rights stretch back to time immemorial. In medieval times rights were strictly regulated and land owners appointed officials known as Reeves to check abuses.

Announcement of the Winner of the Adams Prize 2002
Adams Prize 2002 The University of Cambridge has announced the winner of one of its most prestigious prizes. The Adams Prize is awarded each year by the Faculty of Mathematics and St John's College to a young, UK-based researcher doing first class international research in the Mathematical Sciences. This year's topic is Financial Mathematics, and the winner is Dr David G. Hobson , Reader at the University of Bath and EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Advanced Fellow. Dr Hobson studied as an undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Cambridge, and then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship funded by Record Treasury Management before moving to Bath in 1994. His contributions to Financial Mathematics have ranged wide and far, and have included the use of coupling methods to establish price inequalities for complex pricing models, deep results on robust hedging whose implications have yet to be fully exploited, pricing and hedging of passport options, and pricing of real options. Several of these are currently major topics in the subject, and Dr Hobson has made leading contributions. Interesting results in theoretical probability, in martingale inequalities and Skorokhod embedding have arisen on the way.

    The discovery of Neptune
A triumph of Astronomy: the discovery of Neptune
The discovery of Neptune was the greatest advance in nineteenth century's Astronomy and one of the greatest achievements of human thinking.
On March 13th 1781, the British astronomer of German extraction, William Herschel, discovered the first new planet, unknown from ancient times. He named it Georgium sidus (George's star), in honor of king George the third. The planet's name was later changed to Uranus.
Portrait of Sir William Herschel. Royal Astronomical Society (by courtesy of SEDS). Forty years later, it was noticed that Uranus had not moved exactly as predicted by Newton's Mechanics: its real position differed from its theoretically computed position in one to two arc minutes, about fifteen times less than the visible diameter of the Moon. But even such a small error was not acceptable.
A photograph of Uranus (by courtesy of NASA). The French astronomer Alexis Bouvard used the Newton equations to calculate the movement of Uranus around the Sun, adding the disturbances induced by the presence of the giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn. The remaining planets then known (Mercury, Venus, the Earth and Mars) are too far away and too small for their effect on Uranus to be noticeable. The anomalies in the orbit of Uranus had two possible explanations:
    • The Newton equations are not exact.

Adams, John Couch (szül. 1819. jún. 5. Laneast, Cornwall, Anglia - megh. 1892. jan. 21.
