More Women in Math
This week I have chosen to spotlight a woman who was not only brilliant mathematically, but a great humanitarian. First I would like to mention that another excellent source on women mathematicians is the book Women in Mathematics by Lynn M. Olsen. Second, since last week I have discovered that there is a computer server named hypatia.math . (Hurrah!) Now, let me introduce you to Maria Geatan Agnesi, the first woman math professor. Maria Geatan Agnesi was undoubtably unique among mathematicians. She lived her life in Milan, Italy, from 1718-1799. She had the fortune to be born into a society that found intelligent women attractive. She mastered many languages in her early childhood and at age nine published a Latin discourse describing the benefits of educating women. Her father was a professor in mathematics and the Agnesi home became a hub for intellectual activity. Despite her shy nature, Maria became actively involved in the discussions that ensued in her home. She was the oldest of 21 children and when her mother died she took on the responsibility of caring for the household. Even with this burden she continued her work in mathematics, though in a less public environment. In 1738 she published a collection of essays on philosophy and natural science entitled

Maria Gaetana Agnesi
Written by Elif Unlu, Class of 1995 (Agnes Scott College)
Even though her contribution to mathematics are very important, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was not a typical famous mathematician. She led a quite simple life and she gave up mathematics very early. At first glance her life may seem to be boring, however, considering the circumstances in which she was raised, her accomplishments to mathematics are glorious. Enjoy! During the Middle Ages, under the influence of Christendom, many European countries were opposed to any form of higher education for females. Women were mostly deprived from the fundamental elements of education, such as reading and writing, claiming that these were a source of temptation and sin. For the most part, learning was confined to monasteries and nunneries which constituted the only opportunity for education open to girls during the Middle Ages. After the fall of Constantinople (today Istanbul), many scholars migrated to Rome, bringing Europe knowledge and critical thinking, which in turn gave rise to the Renaissance. However, except in Italy, the status of women throughout Europe changed very slowly. In Italy, however, where the Renaissance had its origin, women made their mark on the academic world. Intellectual women were admired by men, they were never ridiculed for being intellectual and educated. This attitude enabled Italian women to participate in arts, medicine, literature, and mathematics. Among many others, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was by far the most important and extraordinary figure in mathematics during the 18th century.

As the oldest of 21 children, she was also the head of the family to her very lonely, widower father who was a professor at Balogna University. Regardless of her home life, she was a mathematical genius whose abilities could be recognized because of her father's position. Her masterpiece Analytical Institutions (1748) that was the most complete work on differential and integral calculus to that time. Critical historians claim it was merely written as a textbook for her brothers. Those authorities fail to take into consideration her 1738 Propositiones Philosophicae which was a collection of essays on natural science and philosophy, plus the later invitation to assume her father's position at the university after his death. The critics also fail to note that at age nine, as a child prodigy versed in French, Greek, Hebrew, she gave an hour-long lecture in Latin on the right of women to study (women's rights). (Of course, such historical denigration doesn't really work because she DID write the great mathematical book whether it was for her brothers or not. . .and what an even great stunning accomplishment it was if it was NOT a serious work! What could she have done, then, if she had really tried :-)

In 1991, the people who are responsible for such things, named a crater on the planet Venus "Agnesi" in honor of this distinguished Italian scientist. Agnesi's field was not astronomy, but mathematics. And while the planet Venus is often associated with the idea of romantic love, Maria was never married; in fact, she desired to be a nun. Her passion, it seems, was about ideas; not affairs of the heart. As a young girl MARIA GAETANA AGNESI was called a "Walking Polyglot" and the "Seven Tongued Orator." At the age of nine she transcribed and delivered a discourse in Latin on the need for female education entitled, "Oratio qua ostenditur artium liberalium studia femineo sexu necitiquam abhorre." She spoke Greek at 11 and Hebrew at 13. She was born on May 16, 1718, the first of 21 children of Pietro Agnesi a wealthy and educated man of Milan, Italy. Pietro's family had earned their wealth in the silk business. Her mother, one of Pietro's three wives was Anna Fortunato Brivio. On July 16, 1739 the French writer Charles de Brosses attended a gathering at the Agnesi home to hear Maria Gaetana deliver and debate intellectual issues, in Latin, with other assembled guests. (Her younger sister, Maria Theresa, an accomplished harpsichordist and singer also performed that evening.) Of the 20 year old Maria Gaetana, de Brosses wrote

Agnesi - en heltinde i matematikhistorien?
Abstract

O=(0,0); A=(x,a); M=(u,y) e P=(x,y). Daqui concluímos que a curva de Agnesi tem a seguinte equação cartesiana:
y = a^3/(a^2+x^2)
