Biografia
MARIA GAETANA AGNESI

She was a child prodigy who at age 9 published a Latin argument defending higher education for women. She is mainly remembered for her work in the differential calculus. Her book Instituzioni Analitiche ad uso della gioventu italiana (Foundations of analysis for the Use of Italian Youth) was published in 1748. It dealt with the concepts of calculus and received much attention. In 1750 she became the first woman to occupy a chair of mathematics at the University of Bologna. She is associated with a famous curve in the plane, now called the "Witch of Agnesi" in her honor, given by the formula y = a3 / (X2 + a2). After her father's death in 1752, she devoted herself to religious studies and charity.
A copy of the rare two-volume Instituzioni Analitiche was selected to be the two millionth volume for the ISU Library in 1994; it was purchased with a $20,000 gift from Evelyn Weber. 7/1/96 Narrative Updated: 8/29/1995 Honored By: Mathematics Department College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Peter Rabideau - Dean Iowa State University Bret Larwick - Technology Coordinator Contact LAS Ames, Iowa

Click Here to go Back to the Science/Math Page Throughout Maria's life she gave much to the field of mathematics and much of her life was dedicated to helping others. She is best known for the Witch of Agnesi . When she was not gathering mathematical information or discussing philosophy with scholars, she was taking care of other people, ranging from her 20 younger siblings to older, disabled women. She gave much to the world before her death in 1799. Maria Agnesi's abilities began at home. Her father Pietro Agnesi was a professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna. He was very wealthy, inheriting a small fortune from his family who had earned their income from silk. He made sure his children were properly educated by private tutors. By the age of nine, Maria could fluently speak Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German, Spanish, and French, which she had mastered when she was only five years old. Maria mastered mathematics while a teen. For ten years Maria Agnesi worked on her most famous book, Instituzioni analitiche ad uso dela gioventù italiana (Analytical Institutions for the Use of Italian Youth). Instituzioni analitiche was published in two volumes. The first dealt with the analysis of finite quantities, algebra and pre-calculus mathematics while the second taught differential and integral calculus, infinite series and differential equations. To the many researched theories, Agnesi added her own insights and interpretations, making this an excellent textbook, acclaimed by all who read it.
