Abstract: this paper, I would like to focus on the paper, "An Extension of Schwarz's Lemma," Trans. AMS 43 (1938), pp. 359-364 [Ah1], where Ahlfors proves the now-famous Ahlfors-Schwarz Lemma. In addition to being a minor masterpiece on its own, this paper provides a great deal of insight into how Ahlfors thought of and used geometry as a tool in complex analysis. (Update)
Context of citations to this paper: More in [PS] The essential point here is the systematic use of the Ahlfors Schwarz Lemma [A] in a manner suitable for spectral theory, see [GA] for details. One could imagine attempting to prove Theorem 1.2 in the following way: we consider the surfaces S k = H 2 = Gamma k , and... ...technique to establish that two conformally equivalent metrics are actually close.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences - Memorial Minute:
Lars Valerian Ahlfors
At a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on October 17, 2000, the following Minute was placed upon the records. Lars' lectures, as well as his writings, were famous for their clarity, economy and elegance. The lectures were delivered in a strongly flavored Scandinavian accent, and his textbook, "Complex Analysis" (1953), is still the leading elementary text on the subject for students of pure mathematics. Lars Valerian Ahlfors was born under tragic circumstances in Helsinki on April 18, 1907: his mother died in childbirth. His father, a professor of engineering, remarried and tried to give Lars a normal boyhood as Finland struggled through World War I and gained its independence from Russia. When he entered the university in 1924, Ahlfors soon caught the eye of Ernst Lindelof, the patriarch of Finnish mathematics, and Rolf Nevanlinna, a rising mathematical star. The year after Ahlfors graduated, Nevanlinna was invited to Zurich and Ahlfors accompanied him. There he met many of the leading mathematicians of Europe and solved an important problem in complex variable theory. Back in Finland he got a lectureship at the University of Turku, where he wrote his thesis and several other papers that attracted international attention and brought him an invitation to Harvard. The Fields Medals were first awarded in 1936, and Ahlfors was one of the two recipients.

Lars Ahlfors
(Redirected from Lars Valerian Ahlfors Lars Valerian Ahlfors April 18 October 11 ) was a Finnish mathematician , remembered for his work in the field of Riemann surfaces and his text on complex analysis He was born in Helsinki , the son of a Professor of Engineering. He studied at Helsinki University from 1924, graduating in 1928 having studied under Ernst Lindelöf and Rolf Nevanlinna. He assisted Nevanlinna in 1929 with his work on Denjoy's conjecture on the number of asymptotic values of an entire function. Ahlfors was appointed lecturer in mathematics at the University of Turku. He completed his doctorate in 1930. In 1935 he went to Harvard University and in 1936 he was one of the first to be awarded the Fields Medal . He returned to Finland in 1938 to take up a post at the University of Helsinki, but the outbreak of war led to problems although Ahlfors was unfit for military service. He was offered a post at the
