Terriers Edge Cornell In First Match At Track and Tennis Center February 9, 2003
The Terrier women's tennis team made history on Sunday afternoon as it defeated Cornell, 4-3, in the first indoor tennis match ever played at B.U.'s Track and Tennis Center. It also marked the opener of the spring season for the Terriers, as their previously scheduled opener against Temple University on Friday (February 7th) was cancelled due to the snowstorm that hit Boston. Sunday's spring opener was not decided until freshman Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, FL) won the third and deciding set in her match against Melissa Tu. The final score was 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The key game in the final set came at 4-4 where Ahmes played an aggressive game, which put her up, 5-4. She then closed out the match with the win in the 10th game of the third set. The Terriers opened the match with a point by winning all three doubles matches. Juniors

What are numbers? What is your idea of numbers? What is their nature? How do they work? What are they good for? Ahmes: Well, you announced that question last week, and so I prepared myself to provide a short and nevertheless complete answer. Numbers are basically things of the mind, I believe, and the very instrument by which Osiris overcame Seth. Me: I can imagine what you mean by the first part of your answer, while the second one leaves me rather perplexed I must confess.

Lecture 2: A problem from the Ahmes papyrus Egyptian mathematics Egyptian mathematics -3000 -2000 is found written in Hieroglyphics . It was carved in pyramids and temples by priests and scribes and concerns taxation, building design, land measurement, restoration of boundaries after floods and religious ritual such as the sizes and shapes of altars. It was also written ink on papyrus scrolls, preserved by storage in pots in a dry climate. This text was signed by Ahmes, ~-1650 and contains problems and solutions. It is written in Hieratic (cursive) script which was translated by first transliterating back into hieroglyphics and then using Rosetta stone and other keys to deduce the sound and meaning. Notation: Hieroglyphics had different symbols for distinct powers of ten written in groups of 1 - 9. It is written from right to left, with numerals grouped so that small order digits occur on the left. The hieratic has symbols for each digit 110, 1090, etc. Algorithms: for addition and subtraction, group symbols in blocks of ten and replace by next higher. In hieratic probably use counting board or memorization. Multiplication by successive doubling e.g. 12 x 13

PI GRECO STORIA E CURIOSITA’ DI UN NUMERO AFFASCINANTE II
PREMESSA

76. Egfrac.html
Much of what we know about Egyptian fractions has been inferred fromthe Rhind papyrus , written by the scribe ahmes around 1650 BC.
http://www.ms.uky.edu/~carl/ma330/html/egfrac1.html
Egyptian Fractions The Egyptian scribes developed a fascinating system of numeration for fractions. To represent the sum of and for example, they would simply write . Actually, there's not a thing wrong with this, although it is tempting for us to go ahead and 'add' them together to get . But is a perfectly good name for , a fact we recognize when we write the equation . The problem the Egyptians had was that although they had a notation for the unit fractions, i.e., fractions of the form , they did not have a compact notation for the general fraction . Some might say their numeration system was faulty, but that would be overly critical, since they were the first (as far as we know) to have any way of giving names to fractions.
Question : How do you suppose an Egyptian scribe would have written 3/8 ? 3/5 ? Even though the Egyptian method of writing fractions stuck around for a long time, people were still very aware of its limitations. A good example of this is found in the Almagast , written by the Greek Mathematician, Geographer, Scientist, etc, Ptolemy in the first century AD. This book is sometimes referred to as the first trig book because it contains tables of chords for the equivalents of the sine and cosine function for use in astronomical calculations. Ptolemy

This vaguely aligns Egypt's Old Kingdom with the Roman Empire, the Middle Kingdom with the Catholic Church, and the 18th dynasty with the US of A: So 'now' in 2001, Horemheb is in his 9th year, Tut having died in 1988 with Ay reigning until 1992 (cf Reagan and Bush). The 19th dynasty is scheduled to start in 2020. And by chance, this brings the Tyrolean Iceman into alignment with Jesus:

EGYPTIAN MATHEMATICS PAPYRI (and contents exhibited)
There are two primary sources and a number of secondary sources on Egyptian Mathematics. The primary sources are the Rhind (or Ahmes) Papyrus and the Moscow Papyrus , and between them they contain 112 problems with solutions. Among the secondary sources are three payri from ~1800 BC: Egyptian Mathematical Leather Roll (a table of 26 decompositions of unit fractions); the Berlin Papyrus (two problems of simultaneous equations - one of the 2nd degree); the Reisner Papyrus (volume calculations). The Egyptian mace head (~3100 BC) contains a record of the winnings of war of the Pharoah Narmer - 120,000 prisioners, 400,000 oxen, and 1,422,000 goats. It uses a number system allowing counting to continue indefinitely by introducing, if necessary, a new symbol. MOSCOW PAPYRUS was copied by an unknown scribe (~1850 BC). It was brought to Russia during the middle of the 19th century, and is located in the Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and contains mathematics problems (simple equations) and solutions. Problem 10 translation Problem 14 Problem 56 ... Problem 60 The Egyptian Mathematical Leather Roll (~1850 BC) is a table consisting 26 decompositions into unit fractions.
