He was the ninth of ten children born to his parents Alexander Aitken and Eleanora Forman . Portrait of Alexander below: Alexander Aitken was born on 22 Dec 1776 in Midhope, Midlothian, Scotland. He walked down to Lincolnshire, England to seek employment as a gardener. He died on 12 Jul 1865 in employment with Lady Strickland at Walcot Hall, Alkborough as bailiff. Lady Stickland had a picture painted of the old man and the family gave it to his grandaughter, Mary, when they left the district for Cotesbach, Leicestershire. Portrait is now (2002) is with Nigel Spilman at Whitton. Thomas' mother told him that he was named in honour of fathers old master Mr. Thomas Goulton. This lead to a collaborative project supported in part by the Geological Survey ofCanada involving Donald Lemmen and alec aitken (University of Saskatchewan).

Research: R. Gilbert
Research focusses on present sedimentary processes in glacial and postglacial lakes and the nearshore ocean, and on environmental and paleoenvironmental assessment from the sedimentary record. Two principal techniques are applied: acoustic subbottom survey, and analysis of cores recovered from the sediments. In the Cordillera of western Canada work that began in the 1960s and 1970s has been followed by studies of a number of lakes in collaboration with Joseph Desloges (University of Toronto). The first was glacier-dammed Ape Lake which partially drained several times in the late 1980s ( Gilbert and Desloges, 1987 ). Studies of large montaine lakes included Harrison Lake ( Desloges and Gilbert, 1991 ) Stave Lake ( Gilbert and Desloges, 1992 ) and Lillooet Lake ( Desloges and Gilbert, 1994 ) in the southern Coast Mountains. More recent work includes study of Moose Lake in the Rocky Mountains ( Desloges and Gilbert, 1995 ), Bowser Lake in the northern Coast Mountains ( Gilbert et. al., 1997 ) which receives water and sediment from lakes which were formerly glacier-dammed and self-draining, and Chilko Lake ( Desloges and Gilbert, 1997

The View from London, a Book Review
Nixon: a Life, by Jonathan Aitken
1994, Regnery, Washington D.C.
Nixon and Aitken from the book cover What a beautiful book! Probably it could only have been written by someone living at a distance, spared the full force of unremitting hatred of Nixon from the American media and Hollywood. It required an author who (unlike biographer Ambrose) knew Nixon personally, had worked with him, and could exercise a world view and a working practice of foreign affairs, a combination that would be hard to find in our media or in our historians. Aitken was a 23-year-old admirer of John F. Kennedy on the British Parliamentary staff when he met Nixon in 1966, starting to reenter world politics after losing the governorship of California to Pat Brown. Former Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home and former Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd were "crushingly dismissive" of Aitken's briefing paper describing Nixon as washed up. Both, it turned out, were Nixon admirers, like Adenauer and De Gaulle. The young Aitken stayed silently in the London flat to hear Nixon's dazzling conversation, in which he predicted that Japan would become an economic superpower, that the Vietnam war had to be ended quickly, and that China had to be brought back into the family of nations, and that Britain might play a part in bridge-building. Aitken was present when, on two occasions, years apart, Nixon delivered informal talks to Oxford students that became part of the university's history.

Saturday, October 31, 1925 A Swing Along Athletic Row Echoes From Abroad
Although spending his second season in British Isles soccer, local fans have not yet forgotten the brilliancy of Alex Jackson when he sported the colors of Bethlehem on the Steel Workers' front line and can readily understand why critics marvel at his skill and hail him as the greatest overseas soccer find of the past several seasons. Among the publications that reach this desk, one comes from abroad, the Sports Post, paying tribute to young Jackson with the following: "There can be no doubt that Jackson's early travels broadened his ideas and his ability. Experience is the hardest taskmaster of all, so that it was no surprise that when he returned from America in 1925 that he should be snapped up by Aberdeen and that he should play for his native country in all three International matches last season his first real effort in Scottish League football. Nor is it surprising that Herbert Chapman, regarded him as a player who, at 20 years, was worth any money for a team like Huddersfield Town. The writer has never heard the exact amount Huddersfield Town paid for Jackson, but it is known that another club offered Aberdeen 4,500 pounds for him an offer which was refused. It need not, of course, be inferred that Huddersfield necessarily paid more than, or even as much as, that amount. "What is this youthful prodigy like? Well, he's tall, straight as a cane; but with the resiliency of a young willow tree; when football breezes blow his way, Jackson bends to the work that is brought for him to do. One moment he is tall, straight, subdued; the next he is a thing of grace, of action, of fire, of he's just alive with every mortal picture which shows activity. He's light, too, as a player he lacks poundage. He doesn't turn a beam at much over ten stone, and he's slender. But he is like a kitten on his toes.

iCommons spins a course in Web presence
By Alvin Powell
Gazette Staff
Divinity School students in Ellen Aitken's "Gospel of Mark" class studied a passage on divorce last week. While they searched themselves - and the pertinent literature - for the significance of the passage's teachings, they also searched the Internet for details of their assignment. The Divinity School (HDS) class is one of dozens at HDS and at the Graduate School of Education (GSE) that are taking advantage of a new collaborative information technology project called "iCommons." iCommons is tapping independent efforts already under way at Harvard's Schools and Colleges to create a pool of software tools that its creators and users hope will soon include things like online tools for videos and slide shows - indexed by subject and word so students can find key passages and topics - and polling software and threaded discussion tools, where e-mail exchanges between instructors and students are cataloged and searchable by subject.
