He was a learned man whose wisdom and holiness rubbed off on another who would go on to be even greater. He was the only saint of the Church called "Great" who was not a Sovereign Pontiff. He was part and parcel of the fruits of the century of saints and took an integral part in the 14th Ecumenical Council. He defended his pupil once called "the dumb ox" against all kinds of calumny and subterfuge, and always in charity. He preached throughout Western Europe, bringing the Gospel to countless souls. This Universal Doctor continued right up to his death with teaching the Faith even though he suffered in his later years from Alzheimer's well before it was even called that. He was He was Saint Albert the Great The 13th Century-born Saint Albert was a product of the Dominican dominance of that period. He was born in the family castle at Lauingen, Bavaria in 1206, in the region of Ausgburg, of parents rich in good fortune. From the time he was a child, he manifested in his studies an unusual aptitude for the exact sciences. While he was still a boy, he had himself let down the side of a cliff to examine at close range an eagle’s nest which interested him. At the age of fifteen he was already a student of the natural sciences and the humanities at Bologna.

Although the Christian religion is monotheistic and all replies to prayers are said to come from the grace of Jehovah, in practice, prayers to Jesus and the Holy Spirit (the other two members of the Christian Trinity), are acceptable to all Christians, and prayers to The Virgin Mary (the mother of Jesus) have a long history of popular usage dating back to pre-Christian European Goddess-centered paganism. Many Catholics address the Virgin Mary with direct prayers and do not ask her to intercede on their behalfs with Jehovah, but although this is a common practice, technically speaking, Mary is not a deity but a holy person, and therefore prayers addressed to her are also called "intercessions." In acknowledgement of her widespread popularity, Mary's various manifestations and apparitions have been given patronage over an assortment of occupations and conditions by the Church, as if she were a multiplicity of saints. The list of Patron Saints below is by no means complete, and it contains several individuals who have not received Papal approval but find common acceptance among folk-Catholics in various regions. Some people call these non-canonical intercessors "Folk Saints." They fall roughly into three categories:

Albertus Magnus The earliest authentic works extant on European alchemy are those of the English monk Roger Bacon and the German philosopher Saint Albertus Magnus: both believed in the possibility of transmuting inferior metals into gold. Albertus Magnus, also, though his science might have been crude and defective, based it upon the instinctive recognition of the psychic links between man and nature, that he was not an alien in the universe but an integral and natural part of it, something which has been lost in modern science. Lovecraft mentions the "Albert Magnus" in an edition of his writings translated and published in 1651 by Peter Jamm being in the library of Joseph Curwen. We don't know if this edition was one is really a true translation of the works of Albertus Magnus or one of the many grimoires created by self-claimed mystics and alchemists. While the man did write many treatises, there were a huge number of fakes. Some of these fakes attributed to Albertus Magnus include: the "Book of Secretes" published in London, circa 1560 and "Egyptian Secrets" printed anonymously in the United States with no publisher's mark or publication date. He was said to be an adept in magical arts, expecially alchemy, weather manipulation, and creating androids capable of speech. He was a prolific writer though it is uncertain if any of his works have actually survived. Like many 'magicians' of the period, his supposed works were translated and revised out of recognition. "The most famous story about Magnus is that of his dinner to King William of Holland in 1240, in the garden of his monastery. It was midwinter, and the King was astonished at being asked to dine outdoors. But when the party adjourned to the garden, they found it full of flowers and greenery, and gay with singing birds. This naturally sounded like magic to the Middle Ages, but the truth is that the garden was probably a greenhouse, roofed over with some tranparent substance and powerfully heated. However, the anecdote (if true) shows that Albertus liked to astonish people.
