Alexandroff Seminar on General Topology
Session of April 10, 1997
Alexander V. Osipov (Ekaterinburg)
A characheristic of some minimal topological spaces
Some topological properties P (Urysohn property, regularity, complete Hausdorff property a.o.) are considered. Problems of characterizing P -minimal and P -closed spaces are examined as well as the embeddability of P -spaces into P -minimal or P -closed spaces.
Dmitry S. Ohezin (Ekaterinburg)
Monotone-saturated spaces
The class of spaces with a "rich enough" set of monotone functions (i.e. such that the inverse of a connected set is connected) is examined; this means that monotone functions separate points of a space. Necessary and sufficient conditions in the class of topological manifolds and in the class of polyhedra are obtained.
Vitaly V. Fedorchuk

JOHN BARDEEN This is an interview on 29 May 1984 with John Bardeen at the University of Illinois. The interviewer is William Aspray. Bardeen recounts his early career: undergraduate education in electrical engineering, work in geophysics while employed by the Gulf Oil Company in Pittsburgh, the math Ph.D. program at Princeton, and Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He talks about Eugene Wigner, John Van Vleck, and John Slater as pioneers of solid-state physics. Bardeen describes his years at Princeton and the close relationship between the mathematics and physics departments in those years. The Princeton Mathematics Community in the 1930s

VALENTINE BARGMANN (with ALBERT TUCKER) This is an interview of Valentine Bargmann at Princeton University on 12 April 1984. The interviewers are William Aspray and Albert Tucker. Bargmann tells of his immigration to the United States in 1937. He became a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and worked as an assistant to Einstein. Bargmann talks about the relationship between mathematicians and physicists at Princeton and elsewhere, and about his wartime work. In 1948 he accepted a tenured position in the physics department at Princeton. Bargmann and Tucker describe conditions in Princeton in the 1930s and talk about von Neumann, Einstein, Milton White, and others.

    Jakob Nielsen papirer
    Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
    Kort beskrivelse:
    Klausuler:
    Ingen.

    Mathematics
Mathematics has been prominent in the Princeton curriculum since the founding of the College. In 1760, entering students were required to have an understanding of the rules of arithmetic, and underclassmen learned algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and conic sections. In 1853 a Boston newspaper reported that at Princeton the study of mathematics was carried on ``to an extent not excelled by any other college in the country.'' In the early years, instruction in mathematics was given by faculty members who generally taught other subjects as well. The first trained mathematician on the faculty was Walter Minto, who had studied in Pisa and had taught in Edinburgh before being called to Princeton in 1787. Not until a century later did the College again have on its faculty teachers who had studied in the European mathematical centers; the first was Henry Burchard Fine (A.B. Princeton 1880), who received his Ph.D. degree at Leipzig in 1885. Under the chairmanship, from 1929 to 1945, of Fine's successor, Luther P. Eisenhart, the department continued to make outstanding appointments of promising young mathematicians, such as Alonzo Church, a noted logician; Eugene P. Wigner, Thomas D. Jones Professor of Mathematical Physics and later a Nobel laureate; Salomon Bochner, known for the breadth of his contributions to many different areas of analysis; and Samuel S. Wilks, a distinguished mathematical statistician. With the permanent mathematical faculties and visiting members of the University and the Institute, Princeton became an intensely active center for mathematical research in the 1930s.
