. His religious life is interesting. He says that at eighteen years he found three culminating points in his life, his First Communion, the reading of Thomas's "Eulogy of Descartes", and the taking of the Bastille. His marriage to the pious Julie Carron was secretly performed by a priest, her family refusing to recognize the competency of the "constitutional" clergyman; this fact impressed him very deeply. On the day of his wife's death he wrote two verses from the Psalms, and the prayer, "O Lord, God of Mercy, unite me in Heaven with those whom you have permitted me to love on earth". Serious doubts harassed him at times, and made him very unhappy. Then he would take refuge in the reading of the Bible and the Fathers of the Church. "Doubt", he says in a letter to a friend, "is the greatest torment that a man suffers on earth". His death took place at Marseilles, in his fifty-second year. Storia dell'elettromagnetismo

Andre Marie Ampere
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. André-Marie Ampère January 22 June 10 ), was a French physicist who is generally credited as one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism . The ampere unit of measurement of electric current is named after him. He was born at Polemieux , near Lyons and took a passionate delight in the pursuit of knowledge from his very infancy, and is reported to have worked out long arithmetical sums by means of pebbles and biscuit crumbs before he knew the figures. His father began to teach him Latin , but ceased on discovering the boy's greater inclination and aptitude for mathematical studies. The young Ampère, however, soon resumed his Latin lessons, to enable him to master the works of

Andre Marie Ampere
A life story
by Bo Swanson and Ashley Rosser
Andre Marie Ampere was a mathmatican and physicist. He was born in Lyon in 1775, and died in 1836. His largest accomplishment was the discovery of the laws of electromagnetism. He made many discoveries in this field. These discoveries were possible through his outstanding knowledge of science and math. Because of these great discoveries the ampere, a unit used to measure the rate of flow of an electric current, was named after him. Ampere made many discoveries in the area of electromagnetism (see also) Electromagnetic Fields. He showed that parallel electric currents attract each other if they move in the same direction and repel if their directions are opposite. He invented the mathematical theory to explain the development of electrodynamics. He discovered that an electric current through a coil, acts like a magnet. This discovery led to the invention of the alvanometer, an instrument for detecting and measuring electric currents. With the alvanometer he proved that electric current makes a circut through a battery. Ampere's great knowledge and insite on electrodynamics helped him in his teachings at the Ecole Polytechnique, in Paris. It also led to his publishing of the"Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena," in 1827. Electromagnetism was a vast field of knowledge, and Ampere opened the doors to its discoveries. Andre Marie Ampere was an incredible mathmatican and physicist. His knowledge on the subject of electrodynamics led him to many discoveries. His teachings, and writings perminatly changed America in the field of math and science.

Ampère, André-Marie (17751836) One of the first works Ampère read was Buffon’s Histoire naturelle Later he read the great Encyclopédie , which had an important influence on Ampère 30 years later he could recite many of the articles in this work from memory. As a young boy, Ampère began to develop his mathematical talents. At first, he had been denied the study of geometry because of his young age. However, he defied his parental wishes and studied Euclid on his own. When a librarian informed him that the works of Euler and Bernoulli that he wished to read were in Latin, Ampère learned Latin. On the strength of his early mathematical research work, he was named répétiteur in mathematics at the École polytechnique in Paris.
