Catalogue 218 Literature Section One Catalogue Index Home What's New Americana ... E-Mail Us Rare 18th Century American Edition 1. [African American Literature]: Wheatley, Phillis: POEMS ON VARIOUS SUBJECTS, RELIGIOUS AND MORAL BY...NEGRO SERVANT TO MR. JOHN WHEATLEY, OF BOSTON, IN NEW-ENG LAND. London Printed. Philadelphia: Re-Printed and Sold by Joseph Crukshank, 1789. vi,[2],[9]-66,[2]pp. 12mo, signed in 6s. Early, perhaps contemporary, marbled wrappers. Upper wrapper and first fifteen leaves have ragged erosion in the upper blank margin, affecting only one letter slightly, and diminishing in extent until barely visible on the fifteenth leaf, a few minor corner creases, blank endleaves somewhat foxed, otherwise a very good copy. Third located U.S. printing of the first book-length work published by an African American author. Wheatley's Poems was first printed in London in 1773, and bore the co-imprints of London and Boston booksellers. The first U.S. printing, barring the likely ghostly 1779 Albany printing recorded as McMurtrie Albany Imprints 10 (based only on a 1929 catalogue entry describing it as "on vellum and possibly unique"), was printed for Joseph Crukshank, an extremely prolific publisher of text-books, Anti-Slavery works, theological tracts and almanacs, in 1786. A 1787 printing appeared under the imprint of a competing Philadelphia printer, Joseph James, and Crukshank returned with this third edition two years later all testament to the unusual popularity this collection enjoyed at the time. Nonetheless, virtually all of the 18th century North American editions of Wheatley's poetic work are rare, and many of them extremely so. NAIP locates copies of this printing at AAS and LC, and there is a slightly imperfect copy at Yale.
