This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas . These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy science art music ... theatre , and cinema . We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures , as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities . The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of a Great Books Core List developed by Mortimer Adler (1902-2001) nearly 50 years ago.

ARCHITECTS ... PHYSICISTS MATHEMATICIAN APOLLONIUS OF PERGA (fl. 260-190 or 170 BC) Life
Ranked with the great mathematicians Archimedes and Euclid for his contribution to mathematics, Apollonius of Perga (in the Ionian kingdom of Pamphylia) studied at Alexandria with Euclid's successors, and later taught in Ephesus and Pergamum. Pappus (3rd century AD) described him as arrogant and conceited, the title of "Great Geometer" attributed to him during the lifetime of Archimedes having apparently gone to his head. Ptolemy records that "Hipparchus based his theory relating to the orbit of the planets on the work of Apollonius". In Pergamum he met and worked with Eudemus. Many later mathematicians, including Viete, Descartes, Fermat and Desargues, were influenced by his work; and one of the craters on the moon has been named "Apollonius" in his honour.
Work
His principal works are:
"On Proportional Section": 2 books. Cited by Pappus in his "Collection". Survives in Arabic translation, from which Halley translated it into Latin in 1706.
"On Spatial Section": 2 books. Cited by Pappus in his "Collection". Lost. Halley tried to reconstruct it on the basis of references in other writers.

APOLLONIUS of Perga. Conicorum Lib. V. VI. VII. paraphraste Abalphato Asphahanensi nunc primum editi. Additus in calce Archimedis assumptorum liber ex codicibus Arabicis Mss ... Abrahamus Ecchellensis Latinos ... reddidit ... Io. Alfonsus Borellus ... notas uberiores in universum opus adiecit. Florence, Joseph Cocchini, 1661. Tall 4to, pp. [xxxvi], 415, title printed in red and black, numerous diagrams throughout; old stamp on title and half-title; attractive Italian 18th century vellum-backed paste-paper boards. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the Ecchelensis translation, the first published version of Books V - VII of Apollonius' Conics, which only survive in the Arabic version of Abu'l Fath al Isfahani, based on the translation of Thabit ibn Qurra. Apollonius introduced the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. The first four books of the Conics 'probably contain little that was not already known ... Books V - VII seem to contain the discoveries which he himself had made' (Smith, History of mathematics, I, p. 117). These books were presumed lost (the eighth is still lost) until Borelli discovered an Arabic manuscript in the Medici library in Florence. Abraham Ecchelensis was a Maronite, born in Syria, who died in Rome 1664. He was professor of Arabic and Syriac in Rome and Paris. All of Apollonius's other works have been lost with one exception, De sectione rationis, which survives only in an Arabic translation. The text by Archimedes appended here was translated from another Arabic manuscript in the Medici library. As with the Apollonius, the Greek original of this text does not survive.
