Prerequisites:
Math 3613: Introduction to Modern Algebra, Math 3013: Linear Algebra. You should also be familiar with certain basic concepts in math: the rudiments of logic and proof, particularly proof by induction. This course will require detailed and complete written proofs.
Syllabus:
For this term, I am following Artin's suggestions very closely: Appendix 1-2, Ch. 1.1-5, 2.1-10, 3.1-4, 4.1-8, 5.1-7, 6.1-2.
EXAMINATIONS:
Two one-hour exams will be given, on Monday, Sep. 23 and Monday, Oct. 21 . A comprehensive final exam is also scheduled on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 10:30-12:30 PM

    Universiteit van Amsterdam
On March 3, 1898, Emil Artin was born in Vienna as the son of an art dealer and an opera singer. Many mathematicians are familiar with the occurrence of his name on the title page of Van der Waerden's Algebra . Artin's most famous contribution to number theory is the Artin reciprocity law In Holland, Artin's centenary is celebrated at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The program includes four talks for a general mathematical audience on subjects that Artin was particularly fond of.

    Artin's Conjecture
Conjecture 3.1 (Emil Artin) If is not or a perfect square, then the number of primes such that is a primitive root modulo is asymptotic to , where is a constant that depends only on . In particular, there are infinitely many primes such that is a primitive root modulo Nobody has proved this conjecture for even a single choice of . There are partial results, e.g., that there are infinitely many such that the order of is divisible by the largest prime factor of . (See, e.g., Moree, Pieter, A note on Artin's conjecture
