Author(s): Michael Atiyah Publisher: Springer ISBN: Format: video Price: Review Date: April 23, 2002 Review: The Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) announced Millennium Prize Problems to mark the 100th anniversary of David Hilbert’s lecture at the second International Conference of Mathematicians. In this lecture, given at the CMI meeting in May 2000, Michael Atiyah discusses four of the CMI Millennium Problems, their nature and their history. These problems are among the most important unsolved problems in branches of pure mathematics (analysis, geometry, topology, and mathematical physics). Their solution would have profound implications for fluid dynamics and high-energy physics.

MALCOLM v. OXFORD, CHANCERY DIVISION Ch. 1986 M. 7710
Affidavit of Sir Michael Francis Atiyah
Affidavit of Professor Sir Michael Francis Atiyah, sworn 7th March 1990, applying to set aside Subpoena. Applications to set aside this and the two other similar subpoenas resulted in a hearing before Chancery Master Barratt on 9th March 1990 attended by a phalanx of Oxford lawyers, who, for their three days' work, proudly presented me with bills totalling £8,624.67. Some jape. - A. M. I Sir Michael Francis Atiyah of Shotover Mound, Headington, Oxford MAKE OATH and say as follows: 1. I am a Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Oxford. 2. On last Saturday, 3rd March, 1990, I was served with a writ of subpoena requiring attendance on Monday 12th March 1990 at 10:30am at the Royal courts of Justice in order to give evidence on behalf of the plaintiff in this action. At the same time I was handed £25 by way of conduct money. 3. As I understand it, the action concerns the question of whether or not the Oxford University Press contracted to publish a manuscript written by the plaintiff. Paragraph 26 of the plaintiff's re-amended statement of claim refers to a meeting on 23rd July 1985 of the Delegates of the Oxford University Press. 4. During 1985 I was indeed one of those Delegates but in fact I was not present at the meeting on Tuesday 23rd July 1985. There is now produced to me a bundle of correspondence and other documentation marked "MFA 1". The document numbered 1 in this bundle is the first page of the

Geometry and Physics: A Marriage Made in Heaven

Sir Michael Atiyah (Mathematics Department, University of Edinburgh)
Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 4:00 pm in Hale Auditorium
In the Geometry and Physics lecture, Sir Michael Atiyah discussed how geometry and physics have lived together in close association for centuries. The relationship has had its ups and downs, but for the past 25 years it has blossomed in a remarkable manner. New physical theories require very sophisticated mathematical models and have in turn had a profound influence on contemporary mathematics. Sir Michael presented an overall view of the history and current state of this cosmic marriage.
Sir Michael Atiyah also gave the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics (MCTP) colloquium:

    Fullerenes as Minimum Energy Configurations
    Abstract

A number of quite different problems appear to lead to similar minimum energy configurations. Surprisingly these turn out to be of the type familiar in carbon chemistry under the name of Fullerenes. Professor Atiyah shall survey these problems and provide pictures of computer simulations due to Richard Battye and Paul Sutcliffe. Sir Michael Atiyah received the Fields Medal in 1966 at the early age of 37 for his work in topology. He is one of the pioneers in the development of the K-theory. Moreover, the K-Theory and the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem linked the areas of geometry, topology, algebra, and calculus. His current work involves mathematical physics and the relationship between geometry and particle physics.
