to devote a large portion of his time to financial calculation. Atwood is best known for a work A Treatise on the Rectilinear Motion ... (1784) which is a textbook on Newtonian mechanics. It describes a machine, now known as Atwood's machine, to demonstrate the laws of uniformly accelerated motion due to gravity. Atwood also published on equations for the use of Hadley's quadrant. He extended theories of Euler and Bouguer on the stability of ships. He also wrote on the construction of arches (1801) and on the design of a new iron London Bridge over the Thames. He was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society. Article by: J J O'Connor and E F Robertson Pradem Leuven

Barry Magid 4. The theory that mutual recognition necessitates a destruction of omnipotence in order to make room for the otherness of the Other, may be at risk of universalizing what is only one route to a sense of the Other as an independent center of experience and initiative: traumatic impingement on early organizations of subjective life (retrospectively identified as omnipotence in need of being destroyed) and the response to the trauma of forming a lastingly reified image of oneself and one's experience being insulated from contact with the Other, mirroring the Cartesian binary that separates the intrapsychic from the intersubjective. David Klugman and George Atwood 5. A contemporary debate in psychoanalysis is anchored at a personal level by widely contrasting attitudes toward what is possible in human life: Cartesian thinking, which posits the isolation of the mind and the duality of mind and body, arises from an unconscious attitude of resignation and even cynicism as to the possibility of healing a breach in relatedness; certain trends in post-Cartesian thought, positing interdependence and approaching mind-body relations phenomenologically, reflect an attitude of hope that sustaining relations to others can be restored and that personal fragmentation can thereby be brought together in an embracing unity.

l. The traditional diagnostic process requires dividing the constituents of the intersubjective field into the patient and a separate observer, who does not consider himself or herself part of the diagnosis; this separation inevitably denies the patient the opportunity to have a twinship selfobject experience that is needed, generating reactions to this deprivation (feelings of estrangement, isolation, anxiety, depression, and the like) which the observer then identifies as emanating from a pathological condition located inside the patient's mind (or body). 2. Wasn't it partly Nietzsche's work itself which, through deconstructive and poststructuralist readings, helped bring about the "death of the author," and thus- the "death" of psychobiography? (Sarup, 1993) Wasn't it Nietzsche who foresaw the postmodern decomposition of subjectivity into the functional effects of cultural codes? Perhaps. Yet, as we so often find when examining Nietzsche's texts, these elements are themselves juxtaposed with and even superimposed on their polar opposites. Nietzsche's apparent flight from the semiotic oppression inherent in the notion of all-determining authorship is coupled with a passionate desire to

ID: 388-7 In the culminating volume in Stolorow and Atwood's development of intersubjectivity theory, the authors explain why the perspective of intersubjectivity cannot be reduced to a clinical sensibility that can be grafted onto existing psychoanalytic theory. R ather, they argue, the intersubjective perspective has methodological and epistemological implications that mandate a radical revision of all aspects of psychoanalytic thought. Contexts of Being is an important firs t step in effecting this revision. "The book succeeds admirably in describing an important new viewpoint in psychoanalysis in an easily accessible way. Whatever one's view of the intersubjective approach, this volume ensures that view can be based on its lucid exposition." Robert Galatzer-Levy, M.D., International Journal of Psycho-Analyssi Contents

Working Intersubjectively: Contextualism in Psychoanalytic Practice
Psychoanalytic Inquiry Book Series, V. 17
LP: $24.95 120 pp. 1997/2001 pbk. (available in pbk. only) ID:360-7 From an overview of the basic principles of intersubjectivity theory, Orange, Atwood, and Stolorow proceed to contextualist critiques of the concept of psychoanalytic technique and of the myth of analytic neutrality. They then examine the intersubjective contexts of extreme states of psychological disintegration, and conclude with an examination of what it means, philosophically and clinically, to think and work contextually.
This lucidly written and cogently argued work is the next step in the development of intersubjectivity theory. In particular, it is a clinically grounded continuation of Stolorow and Atwood's Contexts of Being (TAP, 1992), which reconceptualized four foundational pillars of psychoanalytic theory the unconscious, mind-body relations, trauma, and fantasy from an intersubjective perspective. Working Intersubjectively expounds and illustrates the contextualist sensibility that grows out of this reconceptualization. Like preceding volumes in the Psychoanalytic Inquiry Book Series by Robert Stolorow and his colleagues, it will be theoretically challenging and clinically useful to a wide readership of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapists.

Remarks of J. Brian Atwood
George Washington University Elliott School for International Development Washington, D.C. January 22, 1999 My thanks to the Elliott School and the Overseas Development Network for sponsoring this important series of lectures and for inviting me today. As George Washington University marks one hundred years of teaching international affairs, and the Elliott School celebrates its first decade of leadership, I offer congratulations to you both. The timing of your invitation is good because I am in the final months of my tenure as Administrator of USAID. For me, this is a time both for looking back at what we have accomplished and forward to the challenges that remain. Today, in keeping with your theme of lessons for the 21 st century, I’d first like to look at the great experiment in international development that the United States began more than fifty years ago, with President Truman’s Marshall Plan and Point Four program of worldwide technical assistance, and continued with President Kennedy’s creation of the U. S. Agency for International Development. I call these programs an experiment because, throughout human history, nations have lavished vast amounts of money trying to conquer one another, but never before, to my knowledge, have great nations spent their treasure trying to build up other, less developed nations.
