Babbage, Charles English mathematician, who lived from 1792 to 1871, and inventor, famous for his attempts to develop a mechanical computational aid he called the analytical engine . Although it was never constructed and was decimal rather than binary (see Numeration ) in conception, it clearly anticipated the modern digital Computer . A scientist with extremely broad interests, Babbage probed the roles of learned societies and government in advancing science, and wrote on mass production and on what is now called operational research.

The Industrial Revolution

Introduction:
Three material inventions combined to bring the period (the Middle Ages) to a close and to usher in the modern world. In each case the actual origin of the invention is a matter of dispute.
  • The Mariner's Compass seems to have been introduced into Europe by Italian traders at the time of the Crusades, and to have been used in the later Middle Ages by English merchants voyaging to Iceland.
  • Gunpowder was known in the thirteenth century, but was first put to warlike use by the Florentines early in the fourteenth.
  • The printing-press was invented in the first half of the fifteenth century, probably by Lourens Coster of Haarlem, thus, it seems, the invention occurred prior to Gutenberg of Mainz. Of these three inventions the work, not of monks or knights, but of traders and burghers the first made ocean navigation possible, the second ended the military domination of the feudal lords, and the third ended the clerical monopoly to learning. Without the first two it is unlikely that the new civilization of the West, jammed between Islam and the Atlantic, would even have survived. Without the third its survival would have been culturally sterile.
There were a large number of 18th century inventors, some known and of whom much has been written, a few of whom we shall shortly refer; but there were a greater number whose names and the nature of their inventions have been lost to history.

    Babbage, Charles
British mathematician and inventor of an analytical machine based on principles similar to those used in modern digital computers. Babbage, Charles Babbage, Charles (1792-1871), British mathematician and inventor, born in Teignmouth. He designed and built mechanical computing machines on principles that anticipated the modern electronic computer. In the 1820s Babbage began developing his Difference Engine, a mechanical device to perform simple mathematical calculations. In the 1830s Babbage began developing his Analytical Engine, which was designed to carry out more complicated calculations. Babbage's book Economy of Machines and Manufactures (1832) initiated the field of study known today as operational research.
invented the analytical engine mentor to Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace invented the cowcatcher - the metal device in front of steam locomotives devised a method of analyzing complex systems which became the foundation of the field of operational research proved that the cost of analyzing and assigning a value for delivering mail according to distance was much more expensive than assigning a flat rate fee (should phone companies be listening? -aj)

Abb. unten). Der Rechner wurde von seiner Assistentin Ada Lovelace programmiert. Diese Maschine sollte:
  • durch ein vorher ausgearbeitetes Programm gesteuert werden

    THE NINTH
    BRIDGEWATER TREATISE
    A FRAGMENT.
    BY
    CHARLES BABBAGE, ESQ.
"We may thus, with the greatest propriety, deny to the mechanical philosophers and mathematicians of recent times any authority with regard to their views of the administration of the universe ; we have no reason whatever to expect from their speculations any help, when we ascend to the first cause and supreme ruler of the universe. But we might perhaps go farther, and assert that they.are in some respects less likely than men employed in other pursuits, to make any clear advance towards such a subject of speculation."—Bridgewater Treatise, by the REV. WM. WHEWELL, p. 334.

The Introduction of Analysis into England
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Ivory The Cambridge Analytical School Woodhouse Peacock ... Herschel The complete isolation of the English school and its devotion to geometrical methods are the most marked features in its history during the latter half of the eighteenth century; and the absence of any considerable contribution to the advancement of mathematical science was a natural consequence. One result of this was that the energy of English men of science was largely devoted to practical physics and practical astronomy, which were in consequence studied in Britain perhaps more than elsewhere.
    Ivory
Almost the only English mathematician at the beginning of this century who used analytical methods, and whose work requires mention here, is Ivory, to whom the celebrated theorem in attractions is due. Sir James Ivory was born in Dundee in 1765, and died on September 21, 1842. After graduating at St. Andrews he became the managing partner in a flax-spinning company in Forfarshire, but continued to devote most of his leisure to mathematics. In 1804 he was made professor at the Royal Military College at Marlow, which was subsequently moved to Sandhurst; he was knighted in 1831. He contributed numerous papers to the Philosophical Transactions , the most remarkable being those on attractions. In one of these, in 1809, he shewed how the attraction of a homogeneous ellipsoid on an external point is a multiple of that of another ellipsoid on an internal point: the latter can be easily obtained. He criticized Laplace's solution of the method of least squares with unnecessary bitterness, and in terms which shewed that he had failed to understand it.
