FROM ALAN COLLIER-BAKER
Dear all, Like everyone who finds the Web site, what a wonderful trip down memory lane. For those who like me wouldn’t remember a person from a bar of soap until they see a photo I’ve included a photo of me back then (I think about aged 15). From an education perspective I recall finding it very easy to under-achieve and got so good at it that if an award was going I would definitely been in with a shout. Anyway, continuing on to Sixth Form was never really an option for me, so I set off to join the RAF (thanks to Glen Morgan’s Mum for putting the idea in my head). For those that do remember me from back then, you may recall my home life was a little unsettled, so getting away was pretty high on my priority list. Anyway, I found an organisation that I fitted into and got on with my life - a life that would take me to various locations around the UK, but never back to Blackpool for anything more than social visits to my Mum and business trips to BAe Warton. Looking back now, I wish I’d made more effort to catch up with some of you, but there never seemed enough time (pitiful excuse I know). Other than Ireland, I’ve just about lived in the rest of the UK, having had 14 moves during my RAF career. The best was probably North Scotland a bit cold but otherwise an utterly fantastic place to live.

Transcendental Number Theory
Alan Baker
Review date: 26/6/98
Publisher: CUP
Published: 1975 This book has been the standard survey of the theory of transcendental numbers for some time now - the first edition was published in the mid-seventies. The author is a prominent researcher in the field, and several chapters draw heavily on his own work. My own mathematics training is in areas other than number theory, and I found large parts of the book difficult to follow. I have a copy of the basic number theory textbook written by Baker, An Introduction to Number Theory , and I would have expected some discussion of concepts used in Transcendental Number Theory but absent from the more basic book. The other problem is with Baker's writing style, and it is shared with An Introduction to Number Theory . His mathematics is extremely condensed in style, and it is often difficult to work out what is going on. In a survey this is less of a problem than in a textbook, but I still felt I would have found it easier to follow if I were attending a course of lectures based around the book at the same time as reading it. Heisuke HIRONAKA born April 9, 1931, Yamaguchi-ken, Japan

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
