Sinclair As part of the full-year 2000-2001 program on Operator Algebras, MSRI will host a one-week workshop on Free Probability and Non-Commutative Banach Spaces, January 22-26, 2001. The Free Probability section of the workshop will cover several aspects of the subject: applications to von Neumann algebras and C*-algebras of free product type, connections with random matrix theory, free stochastic processes and free stochastic integration, combinatorial approach via noncrossing partitions, free entropy. Idea - the Banach competition Instead of calling for a large formal programme, the Geoscope process can be organised in the form of a Banach competition. This idea behind the Geoscope relates to the list of mathematical problems that was developed by the famous mathematician Stefan Banach at the beginning of the 20th century. Banach used to work in the (or L'viv, Lemberg) in what was then Poland (now Ukraine). (R.D. Mauldin, 1981) contains the problems as well as some solutions and commentaries. The influence of Banach's problems and his circle was tremendously large.
