Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker ble født i USA, utenfor Baltimore, Maryland.
Benjamin Banneker hadde imidlertid sterk interesse for bøker.

Benjamin Banneker
(1731-1806), was probably the best-known black person in early United States history. He was an astronomer, farmer, mathematician, and surveyor.
In 1791, Banneker was an assistant to Major Andrew Ellicott, the surveyor appointed by President George Washington to lay out the boundaries of the District of Columbia. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson had recommended Banneker for this work.
Banneker was born near Baltimore. His grandmother, an Englishwoman, taught him to read and write. For several winters he attended a small school open to blacks and whites. There he developed a keen interest in mathematics and science. Later, while farming, Banneker pursued his mathematical studies and taught himself astronomy. In 1753, he completed a clock built entirely of wood, each gear carved by hand. His only models were a pocket watch and a picture of a clock. The clock kept almost perfect time for over 50 years.

Search Benjamin Banneker, the son of two freed slaves, grew up on his familyÌs farm in Maryland where he cultivated a love of the way things work. His inventive spirit would lead him to be called the "first African American inventor." Growing up on tobacco farm, Benjamin created a system of irrigation that was so reliable that their crops flourished even in dry spells. During the revolutionary war, wheat grown on a farm designed by Banneker prevented U.S. troops from starving. At the age of 21 Benjamin saw the watch of his acquaintance, Josef Levi. To say the least, the watch fascinated him and eventually Levi gave it to Banneker. Banneker promptly took the watch apart studying its every mechanism. He carved watch pieces out of wood and made the first striking clock to be made completely in America. This clock was famous for its accuracy, keeping perfect time for well over fifty years. This led him to doing work repairing watches and sundials. After his parents died, Banneker spent his time teaching himself astronomy through the books he borrowed from his friends. He built a "work cabin" with a skylight to study the stars spending hour upon hour looking up into the heavens. He soon began to predict solar and lunar eclipses. The compiled results were published in his almanac which became a best seller from Maryland to Kentucky.

Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806)
Benjamin Banneker was a self-taught mathematician, outstanding astronomer, author of almanacs, surveyor, humanitarian and inventor. He was born near Baltimore, Maryland in 1731; he was the only child of a free mulatto motherland African father, who purchased his own freedom from slavery. Banneker lived all of his life on his parent's farm on the Patapsco River in Baltimore County. Young Benjamin attended integrated private schools; he obtained an eighth grade education by age 15, and excelled in mathematics. He took over his parents' farm and became an excellent farmer. Josef Levi, a traveling salesman, showed Banneker a pocket watch, something he had never seen before. He became so fascinated over the watch that Levi gave it to him. He took the watch home and spent days taking it apart and putting it back together. In 1753, using the watch as a model, Banneker produced the first wooden clock ever built in the United States. It was made entirely of wood, and each gear was carved by hand. His clock kept perfect time, striking every hour, for more than forty years. News of the clock created such a sensation that people came from all over to see it, and the genius who made it. During the revolutionary war period, George Ellicot, a neighbor, introduced Banneker to the science of astronomy, which he rapidly mastered. His aptitude in mathematics and knowledge of astronomy enabled him to predict the solar eclipse that took place on April 14, 1789. In 1792, Banneker began publishing an almanac that was widely read and became the main reference for farmers in the Mid-Atlantic states. It offered weather data, recipes, medical remedies, poems and anti-slavery essays. This almanac was the first scientific book written by a Black American, and it was published annually for more than a decade.

Benjamin Banneker 's father, Robert, had been a slave who had been given his freedom and was a farmer, while his mother was Mary Banneky. Mary Banneky's mother had been an English girl, Molly Welsh who had been accused of stealing milk and condemned to death for this crime. Her sentence was then reduced to being sent to the British Colony in North America where she eventually became the owner of a farm and married one of her slaves. Their daughter Mary Banneky also married a former slave and he took her surname. Benjamin received some education at the Quaker School although once he was old enough to help on his parent's farm then he had to end his formal education. He was taught to read and write by his grandmother Molly Welsh who also gave him instruction in the Bible. There was, however, little respite for Banneker from the hard physical labour on the farm. When he was 22 years of age Banneker showed his abilities when he made a clock from wood using a pocket watch he had borrowed as a model. The clock struck the hours and continued in good working order for the rest of Banneker's life. Building this clock seems to have brought Banneker some fame in the local community in which he lived and he quickly acquired a reputation for skill in making and solving mathematical puzzles.

    Narrative Essay
Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), an African American mathematician and amateur astronomer, calculated ephemeredes for almanacs for the years 1792 through 1797 that were widely distributed. On Nov. 9, 1731, Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County, Md. He was the son of an African slave named Robert, who had bought his own freedom, and of Mary Banneky, who was the daughter of an Englishwoman and a free African slave. Benjamin lived on his father's farm and attended a nearby Quaker country school for several seasons. He received no further formal education but enjoyed reading and taught himself literature, history, and mathematics. He worked as a tobacco planter for most of his life. In 1761, at the age of 30, Banneker constructed a striking wooden clock without having seen a clock before that time, although he had examined a pocket watch. The clock operated successfully until the time of his death. At the age of 58 Banneker became interested in astronomy through the influence of a neighbor, George Ellicott, who lent him several books on astronomy as well as a telescope and drafting instruments. Without further guidance or assistance, Banneker taught himself the science of astronomy; he made projections for solar and lunar eclipses and computed ephemeredes (tables of the locations of celestial bodies) for an almanac.

Benjamin Banneker Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was a brilliant young man with an inquisitive mind. His father was a slave, but his mother was a free black woman. Banneker was free and was able to attend the local school. Early in his schooling, he showed an unusual talent for mathematics, but his interests ranged from bees and locusts to the stars in the heavens. Banneker read all the books he could borrow from friendly white neighbors. He built a wooden clock that kept accurate time for many years to come. Banneker was a member of the surveying team appointed by Thomas Jefferson in 1790 to lay out the plans for the city of Washington and the District of Columbia. Once the site for the capital was chosen, Jefferson selected Pierre Charles L'Enfant as the chief planner and architect for the project. But the high-handed opportunist was dismissed in 1792 for insubordination and for forging ahead without orders. L'Enfant took off with all the detailed maps and plans, but all was not lost. Banneker was able to accurately reconstruct the plans from memory. His was probably a more sensible plan than L'Enfant's grand baroque one, which was reminiscent of Versailles or Paris. L'Enfant intended the District of Columbia and the city of Washington to be the capital of a vast empire, with the federal house and the residential palace having commanding views in all directions. In 1791 Banneker published an almanac illustrating the results of his observations and calculations of astronomy. He sent a copy to Thomas Jefferson, along with a letter defending the rights and equality of Negroes. Jefferson was sufficiently impressed by the almanac to send a copy to the French Academy of Sciences. Banneker continued to publish his almanac, which appeared regularly, until 1802.

When her servitude ended, Molly purchased a farm along the Patapsco River near Baltimore. and two slaves. In time she set the slaves free and married one of them, a man named Bannaky (changed from Banna Ka). They had several children, one a daughter named Mary. Mary Bannaky grew up, purchased a slave, Robert, whom she later married and lived on the family farm. On Nov. 9, 1731, a son, Benjamin, was born to Robert and Mary Bannaky. Using the Bible, Molly Bannaky taught Mary's children to read, and soon after, Benjamin would read the bible to his mother and grandmother. For those times, life was good to this little community, but work was hard, but not challenging to Benjamin. He learned to play the flute and the violin, and when a Quaker school opened in the valley, Benjamin attended it during the winter where he learned to write and elementary arithmetic. He had an eighth-grade education by time he was 15, at which time he took over the operations for the family farm. He devised an irrigation system of ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs (known around as Bannaky Springs) on the family farm. Their tobacco farm flourished even in times of drought.
