Born in a time of unequal rights for African-Americans, Benjamin Banneker succeeded in becoming a well known and well respected mathematician, inventor, and astronomer. His achievements showed many that blacks could strive when given the opportunity. Banneker was born a free man in Maryland in 1731 and never had to spend time as a slave. One of Banneker's crowning moments as an inventor came as a young man, he invented a clock made entirely out of wood that kept perfect time for the next forty years. It is believed that this clock was the first to be made completely in America. From his work on this clock, he began to fix watches, clocks, and sundials. His fascination with clock work created a greater interest in mathematics and astronomy. In 1791, Major Andrew Ellicott asked Banneker to help him survey the "Federal Territory", which would become the nation's Capital. Working alongside, Pierre L'Enfant, Banneker became an expert on the plans for the city. L'Enfant was dismissed because of his temper and took the plans for Washington with him. Banneker recreated the plans from memory, saving the government the time and money of having to design the city.

Benjamin Banneker author, scientist, mathematician, farmer, astronomer, publisher and urban planner was descended from enslaved Africans, an indentured English servant, and free men and women of color. His grandmother, Molly Welsh, was an English dairy maid who was falsely convicted of theft and indentured to a Maryland tobacco farmer. After working out her indenture, Welsh rented and farmed some land, eventually purchasing two African slaves whom she freed several years later.
In violation of Maryland law, Welsh wed one of her former slaves, Bannke or Bannaka, said to be the son of a chief. Their daughter Mary also married an African a man from Guinea who had been enslaved, baptized as Robert, and freed who took Banneker as his surname upon their marriage. In 1731, they named their first child Benjamin.
Young Benjamin grew up in Baltimore County, one of two hundred free blacks among a population of four thousand slaves and thirteen thousand whites. He was taught to read by his grandmother Molly, and briefly attended a one-room interracial school taught by a Quaker. He showed an early interest in mathematics and mechanics, preferring books to play.
At the age of 22, having seen only two timepieces in his lifetime a sundial and a pocket watching Banneker constructed a striking clock almost entirely out of wood, based on his own drawings and calculations. The clock continued to run until it was destroyed in a fire forty years later.

click image for close-up The cover of Benjamin Banneker's 1795 Almanac features a woodcut portrait of the author, scientist, mathematician, farmer, astronomer, publisher and urban planner, at age 64. The unknown artist who created the portrait depicts Banneker in the Quaker garb he always wore, a simple dark jacket and white shirt although he was closely affiliated with Quakers, Banneker never became a member of the Religious Society of Friends.
The 1795 Almanac was one of six, published annually from 1792 to 1797.
In an era when books of any kind were a luxury found in few households, almanacs were common. They included scientific information, such as weather forecasts, tide tables, lunar and solar eclipses, and the times of the rising and setting of the sun and moon; they were also infused with mild poems, proverbs, and other bits of general information.
What made Banneker's Almanacs innovative aside from the fact that they were produced by a black man in an age when African Americans were considered incapable of scientific, mathematical or literary accomplishment was the inclusion of commentaries, literature, and fillers that had a political and humanitarian purpose.

Benjamin Banneker was an African-American scientist. During his life he had many accomplishments. To some he was known as "The First Negro Scientist." Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9, 1731, and died October 25, 1806. He was born to Robert and Mary Bannakay near Baltimore, Maryland, where he lived most of his life. He grew up like a normal child of his time. Benjamin had a large family. Benjamin's parents were slaves before he was born. He had three sisters and two brothers. His grandparents lived with him and the rest of his family. His grandmother taught him and his brothers how to read. His sisters went to an all girls' school. As you can see, he had an interesting family. Banneker had quite a few jobs in his lifetime. Benjamin's first job was in watch repair. He then took to surveying. When he was older he wrote several almanacs. He had other jobs than just being a scientist.

Although Benjamin Banneker only achieved the equivalent of an eight-grade education, he has been praised as a brilliant man, whose ideas and social vision were far ahead of his time. As a mathematician and writer, his work so impressed Thomas Jefferson, that he forwarded some of Banneker’s manuscripts to the Academy of Science in France. Jefferson, then Secretary of State, wanted to brand false the myth that somehow black people were intellectually inferior. Here is what he wrote to Banneker: Philadelphia, Aug. 30, 1791 Sir, - I thank you sincerely for your letter of the 19 th Thomas Jefferson The life and accomplishments of Benjamin Banneker illustrate his superior mentality. He was born in Ellicott, Maryland, the son of a free mother and a slave father who had purchased his own freedom, as well as a farm of 120 acres near Baltimore. Benjamin was thus considered free and was able to attend an integrated private school. He showed exceptional interest in mathematics and an aptitude for anything mechanical. By the time he was 22 years old, he had designed and built and unusual clock, perhaps the first of its kind in America. Made of wood, the clock struck the hours and kept perfect time, it is said, for more than 20 years.

Lord Bolingbroke's, on the other hand, is a style of the highest order. The lofty, rhythmical, full-flowing eloquence of Cicero. Periods of just measure, their members proportioned, their close full and round. His conceptions, too, are bold and strong, his diction copious, polished and commanding as his subject. His writings are certainly the finest samples in the English language, of the eloquence proper for the Senate. His political tracts are safe reading for the most timid religionist, his philosophical, for those who are not afraid to trust their reason with discussions of right and wrong.
