Professor George Batchelor, who has died aged 80, was one of the world's leading figures in the field of fluid mechanics. George Batchelor was the son of George Conybere Batchelor and Ivy Constance Berneye. He attended Essendon and Melbourne high schools. He completed his secondary school education in 1937 after exceptional achievements. He the entered the University of Melbourne to study mathematics and physics. Batchelor graduated from Melbourne University in 1940, continuing to obtain a Master's Degree in 1941. Due to World War II, he then undertook work for the war effort at the Australian Aeronautical Research Laboratory. His work there was on fluid flow problems in aircraft engines. The work he undertook at this time gave him an interest in fluid dynamics which would become the topic on which he did research for the rest of his life. In fact it was more specific than that, for the applications he studied in the Aeronautical Research Laboratory convinced him that turbulence was the most important problem to attack in aerodynamics. At this time Batchelor wrote his first paper, which appeared in 1944

TAM Report No. 783 (February 1995)
A conversation with Prof. George K. Batchelor
Abstract
On October 26, 1994, Prof. G. K. Batchelor, F.R.S., of Cambridge University delivered the Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo Distinguished Lecture, 'Living with Research', at the Beckman Institute on the campus of the University of Illinois. The following day, October 27, Professor Batchelor visited with various groups on campus. During the morning of that day he spent an hour or so in an open conversation and exchange with faculty and students of the TAM Department. Some highlights of this interesting exchange are transcribed below from a videotape of the occasion. We felt that the exchanges and the many historical remarks, primarily regarding G. I. Taylor, might be of interest to a broader audience, and this provided the motivation for producing a TAM Report available for general circulation. In the transcript Professor Batchelor is identified as GKB, Prof. D. Scott Stewart, who hosted the conversation and had the initial draft transcript prepared, by DSS, Prof. Donald E. Carlson by DEC, Prof. James W. Phillips, who videotaped the session, by JWP, Prof. S. Balachandar by SB, Prof. Harry H. Hilton, a TAM alum and Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering, by HHH. Graduate students' names are written out in full. The draft transcript was edited slightly for fluency by Hassan Aref, and Professor Batchelor kindly read it over. In his words he "cheated a bit, in that the text represents what I meant to say rather than what I did say." The photographs included were taken by Professor Phillips. The initial transcription from a tape recording was done by Athan Chilton.

Professor George Keith Bachelor FRS, 1920-2000
Without George Batchelor modern fluid mechanics would not be the discipline it is today; which he saw as combining physical insight and the application of mathematics directed towards the solution of specific problems; a philosophy of science that was, he said, epitomised by H. Poincare's Science and Method. Batchelor ensured that his vision of the subject and his high standards prevailed both by the example of his own brilliant research work and thorough exposition, (in an unusual prose style that somewhat reflected his admiration for that of Henry James), and by his forceful, tenacious and inspired leadership of Cambridge and internationally based institutions most notably the Journal of Fluid Mechanics whose world-wide circulation peaked at about 2500 per issue. During the 1950's; as a Fellow of Trinity College, and University Reader he established in pokey offices in the Cavendish Laboratory in Free School a world famous group of fluid dynamics, under the benevolent eye of G.I. Taylor, who was still, in his 70's, doing his experiments and asking question about everyone else's. At the formidable seminars held at 4.30 on Fridays, which Batchelor instituted in 1948, many crucial theoretical developments were first presented including his own. He managed these lively occasions like a circus lion tamer, with a turn of his head and a stare at any stupidity or excessive harassment of visiting speakers. To report on the rapid and exciting developments in the subject, many of which resulted from the cold-war boom in aerospace, Batchelor saw that a new journal was needed, which he founded in 1956 as the Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He readily persuaded the leading specialists from over the world to join the Editorial Board; one of the greatest honours for a fluid dynamicist is still to be invited to be an Associate Editor of JFM!
