Daniel Bernoulli
Daniel Bernoulli was born on January 20,1700 in Groningen, Netherlands. He was the son of Johann Bernoulli, brother of Nicolaus (II) Bernoulli and nephew of Jacob Bernoulli. So he was born into a family of leading mathematicians. When Daniel was five years old, the family returned to their native city of Basel. His brother, Johann (II) Bernoulli, was born also when Daniel was five. Daniel was sent to Basel University at the age of 13 to study philosophy and logic. He obtained his master’s degree in 1716. In 1718, he spent time studying medicine at Heidelberg and Strasbourg in 1719. He returned to Basel in 1720 to complete his doctorate in medicine. By this time, Johann Bernoulli was prepared to teach his son more mathematics while he studied medicine and he studied his father’s theories of kinetic energy. Daniel then went to Venice to study medicine. In Venice Daniel was severely ill and was unable to carry out his intention of travelling to Padua to further his medicine studies. However, while in Venice he worked on mathematics and his first mathematical work were published in 1724 with the assistance of Goldbach. This mathematical work was entitled Mathematical exercises . It consists of four parts being four topics that had attracted his interest while in Venice. The first part described the game of faro and is of little importance other than showing that Daniel was learning about probability at this time. The second part was on the flow of water from a hole in a container and discussed Newton’s theories (which were incorrect). The third part of

His father insisted he take up a trade and sent Daniel back to Basel University to study medicine. Daniel completed his doctorate in medicine in 1720, writing his doctoral dissertation on the mechanics of breathing. Failing to obtain an academic post, Daniel went to Venice to study practical medicine. There he worked on mathematics, and with Goldbach's assistance, published his first mathematical work Mathematical Exercises , in 4 parts. The first part described faro, a game of chance. The second part was on the flow of water from a hole in a container. The third part was on the Riccati differential equation, while the final part was on a geometry question concerning figures bounded by two arcs of a circle. Daniel attained fame due to

Daniel Bernoulli was the son of Johann Bernoulli . He was born in Groningen while his father held the chair of mathematics there. His older brother was Nicolaus(II) Bernoulli and his uncle was Jacob Bernoulli so he was born into a family of leading mathematicians but also into a family where there was unfortunate rivalry, jealousy and bitterness. When Daniel was five years old the family returned to their native city of Basel where Daniel's father filled the chair of mathematics left vacant on the death of his uncle Jacob Bernoulli . When Daniel was five years old his younger brother Johann(II) Bernoulli was born. All three sons would go on to study mathematics but this was not the course that Johann Bernoulli planed for Daniel. Johann Bernoulli 's father had tried to force Johann into a business career and he had resisted strongly. Rather strangely Johann Bernoulli now tried exactly the same with his own son Daniel. First however Daniel was sent to Basel University at the age of 13 to study philosophy and logic. He obtained his baccalaureate examinations in 1715 and went on to obtain his master's degree in 1716. Bernoulli, Johann (1667-1748)

Swiss mathematician (also known as Jean I or John I) who was the father of Daniel Bernoulli ) and brother of Jakob Bernoulli . With his brother Jakob , Johann Bernoulli is considered the most important founder of calculus (with the exception of Newton and Leibniz ). Nonetheless, Johann and Jakob two had bitter arguments about the quality of each other's work. Johann instructed l'Hospital , who later incorporated one of his Johann's results in a textbook he wrote, so that it has come to be known as l'Hospital's rule Johann filled the mathematics chair at Basel left vacant by his brother's death. He drove his son Daniel away from home after he won a prize of the Paris Academy of Sciences for which Johann had competed. Johann Bernoulli proposed the brachistochrone problem which asks what shape a wire must be for a bead to slide from one end to the other in the shortest possible time, as a challenge to other mathematicians in June 1696. For this, he is regarded as one of the founders of the calculus of variations The brachistochrone problem was solved by himself

    Bernoulli's Equation
    The Bernoulli equation states that,
    where
  • points 1 and 2 lie on a streamline,
  • the fluid has constant density,
  • the flow is steady, and
  • there is no friction. Although these restrictions sound severe, the Bernoulli equation is very useful, partly because it is very simple to use and partly because it can give great insight into the balance between pressure, velocity and elevation. How useful is Bernoulli's equation? How restrictive are the assumptions governing its use? Here we give some examples.
    Pressure/velocity variation
Consider the steady, flow of a constant density fluid in a converging duct, without losses due to friction (figure 14). The flow therefore satisfies all the restrictions governing the use of Bernoulli's equation. Upstream and downstream of the contraction we make the one-dimensional assumption that the velocity is constant over the inlet and outlet areas and parallel.
Figure 14. One-dimensional duct showing control volume.
When streamlines are parallel the pressure is constant across them, except for hydrostatic head differences (if the pressure was higher in the middle of the duct, for example, we would expect the streamlines to diverge, and vice versa). If we ignore gravity, then the pressures over the inlet and outlet areas are constant. Along a streamline on the centerline, the Bernoulli equation and the one-dimensional continuity equation give, respectively
