william was probably born at berwick, Sussex, about 1580, but as theParish registers do not survive, therefore cannot be proved.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joanne/william__levett.htm
William Levett On William's Birth record his name is spelt Wyllyam Levett, and on his death record it is spelt William Levett. He was the son of Richard Levatt and an unknown woman, he had three sisters Susan, Jhone and Elen. Susan and Jhone were christened in 1574 and Elen was christened in 1583. Jhone married a Wylliam Hemslie on the 18th October 1602 and had 2 daughters Ann and Jone Hemsley. William was a yeoman farmer holding lands of the Manor of Berwick.
William was probably born at Berwick, Sussex, about 1580, but as the Parish registers do not survive, therefore cannot be proved.
His trade of a mason is mentioned in the Parish Register against his burial entry, as well as in his will. The barn mentioned in his will, may well be the barn that features in later years, when divided into northern and southern halves in the Berwick Manor Court Records.
In 1614 William Levett was a Churchwarden of Berwick, and signed the Bishop Transcripts, but whether it was this William or another who was a farmer, is not known.
Noted events in his life were:
2. Occupation; 20 Aug 1615; SSX, Berwick. Yeoman Manor of Berwick

Carpenters and millwrights were sent over from England in the Pied Cow, led by William Chadbourne, to build a sawmill and a "stamping mill" at the upper falls. This was the first grist-mill in New England to run by water, though Boston had a wind-mill to grind corn, and Piscataqua sent a small shipload there to be ground, James Wall was one of the carpenters and he made a deposition the 21st of the third month, 1652. For a complete Chadbourne Genealogy, refer to Elaine Chadbourne,s book ‘The Chadbourne Family in America, Penobscot Press" Generation No. 1 William Chadbourne was Bapt. March 30, 1582 in Tamworth, Warwickshire, England, and died Aft. November 16, 1652 in Berwick, ME. He married Elizabeth Sparry October 08, 1609 in Tamworth, Warwickshire, England. Dear John,
I am a descendant of William Quarry (1777-1852) and his wife Mary Learmont (1782-1848). My Grandparents and father worked the same farm in Guelph Township(named Couden Knowes by William). My family does not live far from their memorial stone in Guelph Township. My Grandmother had begun an extensive family tree many years ago that began with William's arrival in Canada. It appears that your great grandfather,Hugh Quarry and my great grandfather Ken Quarrie were brothers. Hugh's son Andrew married Margaret Dugan and they had 3 children, Andrew,Annie and Christina. Christina married William Colgan from Hamilton. My records get a little grey from here. Do you have any info before William and Mary. Please e-mail me at your convenience.

Today the fragmented medieval ruin of Berwick castle beside the Victorian train station and Royal border bridge is a shell of it's former glory, originally a great Scottish fortress fought over by the Scots and the English for centuries. If it's stones could talk what tales they could tell invasions, massacres, wars, hostage taking and the like. In 1296 King Edward I of England, the "Hammer of the Scots" invaded Scotland besieging Berwick castle and it's town "walls" (actually a wooden palisade). Edward and his army entered the town by surprise spending three days ruthlessly killing almost the entire civilian population. While the castle's garrison led by William "the hardy" Douglas could do nothing in their defence. Sadly this slaughter of innocent civilians is not confined to the pages of the past but has been repeated again and again throughout history. Even in the recent Balkans conflict some 700 years after the Berwick massacre. Edward eventually ended the carnage on seeing a pregnant woman giving birth being hacked to death by his men.

    The Vampires of Berwick
    A nocturnal affray...
Vampires in the North East... panic-stricken townspeople... doors locked and bolted against a prowling fiend with a predeliction for human flesh... weird rites to exorcise a beast of the night. Tales of the vampire and werewolf are not strictly confined to mid-Europe. The North East, too, can produce similar gory and chilling tales from darker periods in its history and the Vampire of Berwick is a case in point. The story was first told by William, a highly respected Canon of the Priory of Black Monks, near Coxwold, East Yorkshire. Writing about the time of Richard I, he relates several stories of men who rose from the grave to wander abroad and scare the simple peasantry of the North. At Berwick it all began when a rich townsman fell ill. By all accounts, few lamented his death, for he was a rogue who had already been excommunicated from the Church. He was consequently refused a Christian burial in consecrated ground.... The Berwick of Richard I was, of course, a much different town to that of today, and the surrounding countryside might well have resembled the Black Forest of Germany, where so many other vampire and werewolf tales originate. It was well-wooded country and the chase was pursued with vigour. So popular was it that William I once depopulated 30 miles of countryside to ensure that game was kept for the royal pot. Both Malcolm IV and William the Lion exacted heavy penalties from anyone found hunting in the countryside surrounding the old town.
