The Bells of Berwick
The bells are situated in the Town Hall. Altogether there are eight bells and each has its own name. The exact ages of the bells are not known but it is believed they date from about 1249. In 1874 the bells were sent to London to be re-cast, this cost £353, a hefty sum in those days. They weigh a fair bit too, estimated at four tons three and a quarter cwt. Bell number eight, the tenor bell has the following cast onto it:- These Eight Bells were cast in the Mayoralty of
William Temple, Esq., 1754, Berwick upon Tweed,
Thomas Lister and Thomas Pack of London fecit 1754.
The bells are named after people who have had ties with Berwick in the past. I do not know when the bells were given their names - something else for me to try and find out.
No. 1
"James Stuart" The bell is five and a half cwt, (616 lbs or 280 kilos). James Stuart who was locally know as "Jimmy Strength", died in 1844 aged 116. He was reputed to have lifted a hay cart which weighed one and a half tons. Another story has it that because of the cost of passing through one of the Toll Gates he decided to carry his horse. A pedestrian paid half a penny but a rider had to pay a whole penny. He was born in Charlestown, South Carolina in 1728 and was an expert violinist. He died on the 11th of April, 1844 and is buried in Tweedmouth Parish Churchyard. During his life he married five times and had twenty-seven children, ten of whom were killed in battle. No. 2

Please be sure and check each page. The good news is the streets are now given following the names. The other thing that is different in this book is the addresses of non-residents are listed in the back so I have created a separate page for them. If you see an asterisk in front of a name, that person is no longer a resident and you may look for them on the non-resident page. Questions or concerns? Contact the web owner.

K Satisfied that Scotland had finally succumbed to his rule, King Edward I now turned his attention on France. But his resources were being stretched as he had a rebellion in Wales to deal with. Therefore he summoned King John Balliol to appear before him, and then ordered that he had until 1 September 1294 to provide the troops and funds for his invasion of France. 22 October 1294 King John Balliol openly came out in defiance of his Lord Paramount, King Edward I. It was not until the summer of 1295 5 October 1295 th Berwick , Jedburgh and Roxburgh 16 October 1295 December 1295 March 1296 February 1296 , King Edward I upped the ante, and amassed a fleet of ships off the East Anglian coast, which sailed north to rendezvous with his land forces in Newcastle. 11 March 1296 Several of the Scottish nobles choose to ignore the summons, it included the Earl of Carrick, Robert Bruce, who had their Annandale estate seized by the Crown and reassigned to the Earl of Buchan, John Comyn. The Crown also seized the estates of the Earls of Angus and Dundee as they sided with the English.

A fter massacring the English in Lanark William Wallace and his men travelled westwards into the familiar territory of Ayrshire. Battle of Dunbar in 1296 . Gilbert de Grimsby deflection from the English army would have brought valuable intelligence about their numbers and tactics to the rebel forces. Shortly after his release from captivity in the latter months of 1296 One of the first acts that Sir William Douglas undertook as a rebel was to lead the assault and subsequent capture of Sanquhar Castle, but it was later besieged by the Captain of Durisdeer. William Wallace immediately headed south after he heard of the situation, and defeated the English at Dalswinton, having killed five hundred of them in the progress. Since April 1297 the north of Scotland was also in revolt, with Andrew de Moray and his right hand man, Alexander Pilche, raising the banner for freedom in the name of John Balliol. This minor gentry led a small rebel army of common men across the country attacking and devastating every English garrisoned castle from Banff to Inverness . Possibly under the guidance of Robert Wishart they employed the same hit and run guerrilla tactics that worked so well for William Wallace, as they harassed and killed the English at will. By now practically the entire Moray region was in revolt, as the remaining burgesses hastily abandoned their sworn allegiance to King Edward I and united with Andrew de Moray, under the banner of freedom.

The greatest of the tragic actors of the 19th.Century, William Charles Macready (1793-1873) rescued Shakespeare from the 'improved' versions current since the 17th.Century.
In 1808 Macready's father took over the management of Stephen Kemble's theatre, and William described it on his visit in 1814 as:- "in the inn yard and up a very long flight of steps. The upper part of an old malt-house had been converted into the temple of the drama, and, saving the awkwardness of the approach, had been fashioned into a very respectable one."
Macready senior, noted for his obstinacy, insisted on opening the Theatre while everybody was out celebrating Napoleon's abdication. Three people were in the audience at the start of the performance and none by the end.

Location: Home / Info+ / William Wallace William Wallace born in Elderslie, Renfrewshire near Glasgow. Alexander III, King of Scotland dies while travelling to meet his new bride, Yolande de Dreux, near Kinghorn in Fife. Scottish nobles gather at Scone to elect six Guardians who will act as a provisional government, The Community of the Realm of Scotland . The Guardians will work to protect Scotland in the name of Alexander's only surviving relative, his three-year-old granddaughter, Margaret, the Maid of Norway and Scotland's Queen-in-waiting. Treaty of Bingham: The Guardians agree to the marriage of the young Queen and the son of Edward I of England, thus creating a union between Scotland and England.Queen Margaret dies during a voyage from Norway. Scotland is thrown into crisis as the question of succession to the Scottish throne is cast wide open. Edward I bullies Scottish lords and nobles into recognising him as the supreme overlord of Scotland. Custody of Scotland, together with its castles and their possessions, are handed over to the English king. Court of Claims to the Scottish throne begins in Berwick.

    William Wallace, True Hero
Thanks to Mel Gibson's rollicking adventure film, 'Braveheart', William Wallace has moved from being a name barely known outside Scotland to that of a figure known worldwide as a Scottish national hero. It's gratifying that a person from the history of a small country such as Scotland should be the inspiration for a story which gets worldwide exposure, especially given that, uniquely in European countries, schools in Scotland do not have an obligation to teach their own country's history. Unfortunately, in the past and particularly amongst our 'nobility' there has been a willingness amongst some Scots to see an alien culture as superior to our own, and to suppress our own traditions in favour of a foreign view. Be that as it may, fictional stories based on historical events tend to obscure history rather than illuminate it because drastic liberties are taken with the facts as anyone currently knows them. In this case, though, we know very little about William Wallace, so that even historians are led into speculation, an occupation with which they are more familiar than you might expect. Mel Gibson's William Wallace is probably somewhat at variance with the real man but since we don't really know much about him we might just as well simply enjoy a film which happens to be loosely based on real events. That doesn't mean, though, that we can't examine what few facts are known about the real William Wallace, because historical 'truth' is generally more complex and interesting than any simplified and fictionalised narrative.

    William Wallace
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William Wallace (c. ) was a Scottish patriot who led his country against the English occupation of Scotland and King Edward I of England as part of the Wars of Scottish Independence Wallace is often seen as being 'one of the common people' in comparison to his fellow countryman, Robert the Bruce ( Robert I of Scotland ), who was of more noble stock. Wallace's family was descended from Richard Wallace, a landowner under an early member of the Stewart family, which was later to become a royal line in its own right. Wallace was born at Elderslie near Paisley , in a year unknown, although he was almost certainly still a young man in his most famous years between and There are few contemporary sources for information about Wallace's early life, and much reliance is placed on the account of
