of November 1472, at Ravenna. Bessarion was one of the most learned scholars of his time. Besides his translations of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and Xenophon’s Memorabilia, his most important work is a treatise directed against George of Trebizond, a violent Aristotelian, entitled In Cal umni atorem Platonis. Bessarion, though a Platonist, is not so thoroughgoing in his admiratio’-’ as Gemistus Pletho, and rather strives after a reconciliation of the two philosophies. His work, by opening up the relations of Platonism to the main questions of religion, contributed greatly to the extension of speculative thought in the department of theology. His library, which contained a very extensive collection of Greek MSS., was presented by him to the senate of Venice, and formed the nucleus of the famous library of St Mark. See A. M. Bandini, Dr Vita et Rebus Gestis Bessarionis (17~7); H. Vast, Le Cardinal Bessarion (1878); E. Legrand, Bibliographie Hellinique (1885); G. Voigt, Die Wiederbelebung des klassischen Altertu,ns, ii. (1893); on Bessarion at the councils of Ferrara and Florence, A. Sadov, Bessarion de Nicée (1883); on his philosophy, monograph by A. Kandelos (in Greek: Athens, i888); most of his works are in Migne, Patrologia Graeca, clxi. Bessel, Friedrich Wilhelm
German astronomer and mathematician, the first person to find the approximate distance to a star by direct methods when he measured the parallax (annual displacement) of the star 61 Cygni in 1838. In mathematics, he introduced the series of functions now known as Bessel functions.
Bessel's work laid the foundations of a more accurate calculation of the scale of the universe and the sizes of stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. In addition, he made a fundamental contribution to positional astronomy (the exact measurement of the position of celestial bodies), to celestial mechanics (the movements of stars), and to geodesy (the study of the Earth's size and shape). In 1840 he predicted the existence of Neptune.

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784-1846) was a German astronomer and mathematician who is remembered for the functions bearing his name; the Bessel functions of first and second order appear on this German stamp. Bessel was the first to measure the parallax of a star (Cygni 61) in 1838, thus making it possible to calculate its distance. Observing the motions of the stars Sirius and Procyon, he deduced that each was orbiting around another, dark star. These dark stars were later found to be white dwarfs.

Friedrich Bessel
(Redirected from Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel , born July 22 in Minden Westphalia , died March 17 ) in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad Russia ), German mathematician astronomer , and discoverer of the Bessel functions . He was a contemporary of Gauss Bessel's greatest astronomical achievement was the first successful use of parallax to determine the distance to a star. It had been assumed for some time that this method would be the way that provided the first accurate measurement of interstellar distances, but the difficulties to be overcome were immense. In particular, one had to decide on a star that would be close enough to display a measurable parallax, and then one had to make the very exacting measurement. Other had tried before, and failed, or produced worthless results. Bessel is generally recognized as the first to succeed. In

BESSEL, Friedrich Wilhelm. Nicol, 1818. Folio, pp. (xii), 325, (1). Title and last leaf washed to remove acidity from endpapers of former binding, slight browning and a few spots, library marks at foot of title, two other pages and on edges, but a good copy. Quarter calf antique. FIRST EDITION. The beginning of modern astrometry: a milestone in astronomy. While Bessel was waiting to take up his post as director of the new observatory at Königsberg, he systematically reduced some 60,000 observations made between 1750 and 1762 by James Bradley, and corrected them for the motion of the earth, nutation, and aberration, etc. The resulting catalogue, which Bessel appropriately named Fundamenta astronomiae, gave the mean position of 3222 stars, and set up a reference system for the positions of stars and planets. "This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from the observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then the position of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel's work, Bradley's observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry" (DSB). HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Bessel, Friedrich Wilhelm The parallax of a star, the apparent change of its position during the year, can be used to find the star's distance from the Earth. The star appears to change its position because it is viewed at a different angle in July and January. By measuring the angle of parallax, and knowing the diameter of the Earth's orbit, simple geometry can be used to calculate the distance to the star. The technique was developed by the German astronomer Friedrich Bessel. (Image © Helicon) German astronomer and mathematician. He was the first person to find the approximate distance to a star by direct methods when he measured the parallax (annual displacement) of the star 61 Cygni in 1838.

Popri zamestnaní ¹tudoval jazyky, geografiu, princípy navigácie a neskôr astronómiu a matematiku. Èlánok poslal astronómovi Wilhelmovi Olbersovi a ten ho umiestnil do svojej novej knihy Monatliche Correspondenz a poprosil Bessela o spoluprácu s observatóriom v Lilenthale.

White Dwarfs
Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel in 1832 came to the conclusion that the position of Sirius was oscillating in such a way that betrayed the presence of an unseen companion. In 1862 American astronomer and instrument maker Alvan Clark discovered this companion star visually while testing a new 18 inch refractor for Dearborn Observatory. The new star was designated Sirius B . The faintness of this star coupled with its mass (known through its effect on Sirius) indicated that Sirius B was extremely dense. So dense, in fact, that its existence could not be explained by 19 th century physics. Matter of this density was thought to be impossible. Twentieth century atomic theory provides an explanation. The basic proposition is that no two identical electrons can occupy the same space at the same time. We are familiar with the quantized orbits surrounding the nucleus of a normal atom. The lowest orbit can hold no more than two electrons (and they are not identical; they differ in a property known as spin A third electron must go to a higher orbit.

He also used a method of mathematical analysis involving what is now known as the Bessel function. Bessel, as a boy, dreamed of travel so he studied languages, geography and the principles of navigation. This led him to study astronomy and mathematics. In 1804 he wrote a paper on Halley 's comet, calculating the orbit from data from observations made in 1607. He sent it to Olbers and it was published. Olbers offered Bessel a post as assistant at the Lilienthal Observatory and after some thought Bessel left the affluence of his commercial job for the poverty of the Observatory post. Bessel also worked out a method of mathematical analysis involving what is now known as the Bessel function. He introduced this in 1817 in his study of a problem of Kepler of determining the motion of three bodies moving under mutual gravitation. In 1824 he developed Bessel functions more fully in a study of planetary perturbations.

The Expanding Universe In modern times, first German, then English became the principal language of astronomy. Attention shifted from the planets to the stars, then to the immense expanding universe of galaxies, created billions of years ago in a " Big Bang ." Modern scientists, unlike Copernicus or Newton , first use papers in journals to introduce new ideas to their fellow researchers, and then books to spread those ideas to a wider scientific community or the general public. Classic scientific papers and books illustrating this giant step to an expanding universe conclude the display. Bessel, Friedrich Wilhelm Abhandlungen von Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel.
