Jean Baptiste Biot
A French physicist, best known for his work in the polarization of light, Jean Baptiste Biot was born in Paris, France, on April 21, 1774. He became a professor of physics in 1800 at the College de France through the influence of Laplace, from whom he had sought and obtained the favor of reading the proof sheets of the Mecanique Celeste Although younger, Biot worked on the analysis of heat conduction even earlier than Fourier did (1802 or 1803) and attempted, unsuccessfully, to deal with the problem of incorporating external convection effects in heat conduction analysis. Fourier read Biot's work and by 1807 had determined for himself how to solve the elusive problem. In 1804, Biot accompanied Gay Lussac on the first balloon ascent undertaken for scientific purposes. In 1820, with Felix Savart, he discovered the law known as "Biot and Savart's Law." He was especially interested in questions relating to the polarization of light and for his achievements in this field he was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society in 1840. He died February 3, 1862 in Paris.

Home Geschichte Mathematiker Zitate ... Suche Fourier, Jean Baptiste Joseph geboren 1768 in Auxerre, gestorben 1830 in Paris. Bell [167, S.194ff].

  • From the French Revolution to Astronomy?
Jean Baptiste Biot was a French physicist who was born in 1774. A child during the French Revolution, he joined the artillery at 18 but didn't last long and quickly left to study mathematics. By 26 he was teaching physics at the . His early research with the scientist Gay-Lussac was made aboard a hot air balloon from which he made magnetic and meteorological measurements to a height of 5 Km. Because of a weak stomach he was forced to abandon the research and planned instead some safer trips to Spain and the Orkneys. Among Biot's many accomplishments was a study of the polarization of light. He discovered that quartz crystals rotated the plane of polarization of light and upon further study concluded that the effect was the same with liquids like turpentine and solution of sugar and tartaric acid. He realized that the effect was a result of molecular properties of the substances and discovered Biot's Law , that the amount of rotation of the plane of polarization of light passing through an optically active medium was proportional to the length of its path and the concentration of the solution.

BARON JEAN BAPTISTE JOSEPH FOURIER
French mathematician and physicist famous for his pioneer work on the representation of functions by trigonometric series, was born at Auxere on March 21, 1768, the son of a tailor. He became a teacher in mathematics in 1784 at the military school there. He taught at the Ecole Normale at Paris from its founding in 1795, where his success soon led to the offer of the chair of analysis at the Ecole Polytechnique. In 1807 he was made a member of the academy of sciences. Fourier's masterpiece was his mathematical theory of heat conduction stated in "Theorie Analytique de la Chaleur" (1822), one of the most important books published in the 19th century. It marked an epoch both in the history of pure and of applied mathematics, for in it Fourier developed the theory of the series known by his name and applied it to the solution of boundary-value problems in partial differential equations. This work brought to a close a long controversy, and henceforth it was generally agreed that almost any function of a real variable can be represented by a series involving the sines and cosines of integral multiples of the variable. Fourier died in Paris on May 16, 1830.

Joseph Fourier 's father was a tailor in Auxerre. After the death of his first wife, with whom he had three children, he remarried and Joseph was the ninth of the twelve children of this second marriage. Joseph's mother died went he was nine years old and his father died the following year. His first schooling was at Pallais's school, run by the music master from the cathedral. There Joseph studied Latin and French and showed great promise. He proceeded in 1780 to the Ecole Royale Militaire of Auxerre where at first he showed talents for literature but very soon, by the age of thirteen, mathematics became his real interest. By the age of 14 he had completed a study of the six volumes of 's Cours de mathematique. In 1783 he received the first prize for his study of Bossut 's In 1787 Fourier decided to train for the priesthood and entered the Benedictine abbey of St Benoit-sur-Loire. His interest in mathematics continued, however, and he corresponded with C L Bonard, the professor of mathematics at Auxerre. Fourier was unsure if he was making the right decision in training for the priesthood. He submitted a paper on algebra to

Joseph Fourier showed talent for literature in school, but by the age of 13, mathematics became his real interest. When he was 19, he decided to train for the priesthood and entered a Benedictine abbey. His interest in mathematics continued, however, and he was unsure if he was making the right decision. Fourier ended up not taking his religious vows. He visited Paris and read a paper on algebraic equations, and submitted a paper on algebra. In 1790 he became a teacher at the Benedictine college, where he had studied. In 1793, he became involved in politics and joined the local Revolutionary Committee. For this, in 1794, he was arrested, imprisoned, and released. Later in 1794, Fourier was nominated to study at the Ecole Normale in Paris. This institution had been set up for training teachers and it was intended to serve as a model for other teacher-training schools. The school opened in 1795 and Fourier was certainly the most able of the pupils whose abilities ranged widely. He was taught by Lagrange, Laplace, and Monge. In 1798 Fourier, joined Napoleon's army in its invasion of Egypt as scientific adviser. In particular he helped establish educational facilities in Egypt and carried out archaeological explorations. While in Cairo Fourier helped found the Cairo Institute and was one of the 12 members of the mathematics division, the others included Monge, Malus and Napoleon. Fourier was elected secretary to the Institute, a position he continued to hold during the entire French occupation of Egypt. Fourier was also put in charge of collating the scientific and literary discoveries made during the time in Egypt.
