    Memorial Minute:
    Garrett Birkhoff
At a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on November 12, 2002, the following Minute was placed upon the records. Garrett Birkhoff spent practically his entire scientific life at Harvard. He was born in Princeton on Jan. 10, 1911. His family moved to Cambridge in 1912 when his father, George D. Birkhoff, was appointed to the Harvard Faculty where he served as Professor of Mathematics until 1944. G.D. Birkhoff was a leading American mathematician, domineering and competitive. It is a testament to Garrett Birkhoff's strength of character that he entered a field dominated by his father and was able to have such a brilliant and varied career. Garrett Birkhoff was educated at home until age eight, and then attended public elementary school for three years. Rather than entering high school at an exceptionally young age, he took a year off riding his bicycle, playing baseball, and skating before entering Browne and Nichols for high school at age 12. After high school he again spent a year at a boarding school at Lake Placid with an emphasis on skiing. When he joined his parents in Europe for the summer, his father gave him a calculus book in French to read, so that he would know calculus when he entered Harvard in the Fall. At Harvard, four of his instructors: Brinkman, Morse, Walsh, and Whitney were his father's Ph.D.'s, and Prof. Kellogg, of potential theory fame, was his next door neighbor. As Garrett put it, "my undergraduate mathematics education was almost an inside job."

Birkhoff, George David Birkhoff, George David, , American mathematician, b. Overisel, Mich.; father of Garrett Birkhoff. The son of a physician, he was educated at Harvard (B.A., 1905) and the Univ. of Chicago (Ph.D., 1907) After teaching shortly at Chicago and Princeton, he joined the faculty at Harvard (1912) where he taught until his death. Birkhoff, perhaps the first American mathematician of international repute, is known for his work on linear differential equations and difference equations. He was also deeply interested in and made contributions to the analysis of dynamical systems, celestial mechanics, the four-color map problem, and function spaces. In addition he wrote on the foundations of relativity and quantum mechanics and on art and music, e.g., Aesthetic Measure See his Collected Mathematical Papers (3 vol., 1950).

    Abstract Algebra 1
    Text:
Gallian, Joseph A. Contemporary Abstract Algebra . 4th ed. Boston (MA): Houghton Mifflin, 1998.
Objectives (1) To develop understanding of the definitions and principal concepts of algebra, (2) To experience the proof techniques and methods of discovery used in algebra, and (3) To improve your appreciation for and ability to use mathematical reasoning. Course Content The course will consist of topics chosen by the instructor using chapters 1 - 14 of the text. On exams students are responsible for all material presented in class including any that is not in the text. Any material presented on the board or on handout sheets will be the "official" version for which students will be responsible on exams. Methodology Reading material and homework exercises will be assigned almost every time the class meets. Homework exercises will not be collected. It is your responsibility to ask questions about any difficulties encountered in these assignments. Not all material for which you are responsible will be presented in class. Since this is a 400-level course, the responsibility for learning is yours. The role of the professor is much more to facilitate your learning than to present material. You should come prepared to participate in class discussion and may anticipate being "called on" every time the class meets. Please note that class participation is a major component of the final grade. Problem Assignments There will be approximately 6 - 8 problem assignments, each consisting of several problems (usually proofs). These will be submitted and receive a letter grade. Due Dates: each assignment will have a specified due date. Problem assignments will not be accepted late except for circumstances beyond your control.

    The Undergraduate Collection
Math Library General Information The Undergraduate Collection was a collection of classical mathematics books covering the history of mathematics, assembled by Professor Halsey L. Royden and Rebecca Lasher Wesley in the late 1980's. Professor Donald E. Knuth recommended additional books in the mathematical and computer sciences. At the time, Prof. Royden felt that all students of mathematics should become familiar with these works before they left Stanford. They are shelved in the book stacks by call number, and may sometimes be identified by a narrow (not round) bright green strip on the book's spine.

    Subject: Garrett Birkhoff
I learned only from NA Digest of Garrett Birkhoff's death; I
had, to be sure, heard earlier that he was not well.
It is a loss that means a lot to me. Garrett was formally
my thesis director, but we had only sporadic sessions in that
relation, and I never really "studied with" him. In reality he
was much more important to me than our slight formal contact
    would imply.
This was a long-distance influence. He always had (like his father) a healthy respect for real applications reflected in abstract structures, and a healthy breadth of curiosity, and I
