Biography: Kristine Bonnevie was born in Trondheim, the major city in central Norway. She was one of the nine children of Jacob Aall Bonnevie (1838–1905), a teacher and cabinet minister. Among her siblings were the brothers Carl Emil Christian Bonnevie and Thomas Bonnevie, and the sister Honoria, who was married to the famous meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951). After her death, Bonnevie and Bjerknes had common household and Vilhelm Bjerknes sons, an architect, designed a house specially for them. Kristine Bonnevie was fourteen years of age when the family moved to Oslo, where she graduated from the Gymnasium in 1892. In 1892 she entered Det Kongelige Frederiks Universitet (now the University of Oslo) to study medicine, but soon changed to zoology. She obtained her PhD in 1906 with a thesis Undersøgelser over kimcellerne hos Enteroxenos østergreni . In 1912 she became the first female professor in Norway when she was appointed professor of zoology, and head of the zoological laboratory until 1938; director of the institute of genetic research from 1916.

But how representative are the physics Nobel laureates of the international physics community? Winners and losers On 10 December this year the Nobel Foundation will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the award of the first Nobel prizes. As the winners of this year's physics prize - Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle and Carl Wieman - gather in Stockholm and Oslo, along with the rest of the 2001 prize winners and numerous laureates from previous years who are taking part in the celebrations, it is easy to forget that they represent only the most visible part of the Nobel institution. Since only a maximum of three people can share each prize, one can count scores of unlucky candidates who naturally will not have been invited. That the Nobel prizes tower above all other prizes in science and medicine is, in large part, due to their long history. The prizes were not even ten years old when one American journalist wrote: "The history of modern science might be written without going outside the names of the Nobel prizes for beneficent discoveries in physics, chemistry and medicine." One may disagree with this assessment - arguing, for instance, that the physics prizes of the past century have been restricted to atomic and nuclear physics, omitting most of geophysics, astrophysics and mathematical physics. Nevertheless, one can fairly say that most of the great physicists of the past century have been rewarded with a Nobel prize.

Matematikaren Sophus Lie av Arild Stubhaug Det er i år 100 år sidan den verdenskjende norske matematikaren Sophus Lie (1842-99) døydde. Hans renommé har vakse ytterlegare i den seinare tida og 100-års-dagen for hans død blei markert både i utlandet og her heime. Forfattaren Arild Stubhaug - som skriv biografi om Sophus Lie - heldt foredrag om Lie i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi. Nedanfor fylgjer ein forkorta versjon av dette. Sophus Lie blei født i Nordfjordeid. Faren var ein respektert prest og ein dyktig pedagog med særleg interesse for undervisning og folkeopplysning. Mora blei omtalt som generøs og omsorgsfull. Ni år gamal flytta familien til Moss. Men alt året etter døyde fru Lie. Etter nokre år ved Moss borgerlige Realskole, blei Sophus 15 år gamal sendt til Nissens Latin- og Realskole i Christiania. Denne skulen var blitt stifta av Hartvig Nissen og hans ven matematikaren Ole Jacob Broch for å gi større rom for moderne språk og naturvitskap enn i dei veletablerte latinskulane. Og på den tida Sophus Lie kom hit, var Nissens skule blitt ein formidabel suksess. Lie hamna mellom «nasjonale strategar», og midt i ein skulepolitisk reformprosess. Undervisningssystemet var noko Lie sidan òg interesserte seg for. Han var særleg opptatt av realfagas stilling, og framheva universitetet som ein nødvendig vitskapeleg spydspiss. Allsidig student Han avla ein svært god artium - og begynte ved Universitetet. Her tok han eksamen i den obligatoriske anneneksamen som ein av dei to beste. Allsidigheten gjorde det vanskeleg å velje studieretning. Når han valde realfag, skuldast nok det fleire forhold, m.a. at eldste broren studerte dette faget.
