Contact Kristine Elisabeth Heuch Bonnevie Norwegian zoologist and geneticist, Associated eponyms: Bonnevie-Ullrich syndrome Congenital syndrome consisting of webbing of the neck (pterygium colli), lymphoedema of the hands and feet, hypoplasia of bones and muscles, short stature, syndactyly, laxity of the skin, dystrophic nails, and motor disturbances of the cranial nerves. Biography: Kristine Bonnevie was born in Trondheim, the major city in central Norway. She was one of the nine children of Jacob Aall Bonnevie (1838–1905), a teacher and cabinet minister. Among her siblings were the brothers Carl Emil Christian Bonnevie and Thomas Bonnevie, and the sister Honoria, who was married to the famous meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951). After her death, Bonnevie and Bjerknes had common household and Vilhelm Bjerknes sons, an architect, designed a house specially for them. Kristine Bonnevie was fourteen years of age when the family moved to Oslo, where she graduated from the Gymnasium in 1892. In 1892 she entered Det Kongelige Frederiks Universitet (now the University of Oslo) to study medicine, but soon changed to zoology. She obtained her PhD in 1906 with a thesis Undersøgelser over kimcellerne hos Enteroxenos østergreni . In 1912 she became the first female professor in Norway when she was appointed professor of zoology, and head of the zoological laboratory until 1938; director of the institute of genetic research from 1916.

The Royal Meteorological Society President: Dr H Cattle Abstracts for Wednesday meetings 21 NOVEMBER 2001 : DYNAMICS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION: CLASSIC PAPERS AND THEIR MESSAGE FOR TODAY Prof A Thorpe, NCAS, University of Reading - The Origins of Circulation, Vorticity and Potential Vorticity in Meteorology - a.j.thorpe@reading.ac.uk Two lines of thinking concerning fluid rotation - using either vorticity or circulation - emerged from the work of Helmholtz (1858) and Kelvin (1867) respectively. Vilhelm Bjerknes introduced an extension of Kelvin's ideas on circulation into geophysics. In this talk an historical perspective will be given on what has become known as the "Bjerknes Circulation Theorem". Vilhelm Bjerknes wrote several papers on this topic, the first being in 1898. As Bjerknes noted, a Polish physicist Ludwik Silberstein had previously published an equivalent result concerning vorticity generation in 1896. In his 1898 paper Bjerknes describes many possible applications of the theorem to meteorology and oceanography including to extratropical cyclones, a subject that made his "Bergen School" famous.
