Black, Max
April - May 1981
Russian-born American analytic and linguist philosopher, Black was Susan Linn Sage Professor of Philosophy and Human Letters, emeritus, at Cornell University, and President of the International Institute of Philosophy. After studying and teaching in England, he came (1940) to the United States. He taught first at the University of Illinois (1940-46) and then at Cornell. Black's wide-ranging philosophical writings, including Language and Philosophy (1949) and The Labyrinth of Language (1968), reveal a commitment to the clarification of meaning. Following Ludwig Wittgenstein, Black urges close attention to the multiplicity of ordinary uses of words and denies that language is a mirror of reality. HTML to the Max A Manifesto for Adding SGML Intelligence to the World-Wide Web
C. M. Sperberg-McQueen Robert F. Goldstein
Abstract
HTML demonstrates that SGML markup is useful for networked information. How can it be made even more useful? One way is to extend the tag set from HTML to HTML2, etc. We argue here for a more radical approach: full SGML awareness in WWW. We believe the difficulties are small, the cost affordable, and the advantages overwhelming. SGML is a metalanguage for defining markup languages; HTML is just one instance of this infinite family. At present, documents in other SGML document types must be translated into HTML for display by a Mosaic client - sometimes this imposes unacceptable information loss. WWW browsers could handle other SGML document types without translation by launching a general-purpose SGML browser to view them, as they now launch graphics viewers; a better solution overall would be to build SGML display into the WWW browsers themselves. Either way, display of an SGML document would be controlled by a style sheet using a small number of display primitives ('bold', 'line break', etc.) to specify the rendition of each element type. For 'well-known' document type definitions (DTDs) like HTML, style sheets could be distributed with the browser, or built in. For other DTDs, the browser would fetch a style sheet from the server. Using style sheets, browser software can also make it easy to customize document display. DTDs and style sheets can be designed to accommodate extensions, ensuring that authors can make small extensions to the tag set with no change whatsoever in the target browsers and virtually no performance penalty.

Two black holes shine brightly in X-rays
By Dr David Whitehouse
BBC News Online science editor For the first time scientists have seen two supermassive black holes existing together at the core of the same galaxy. The black holes are orbiting each other and will collide and merge to create an even larger black hole - resulting in a catastrophic event that will unleash intense radiation and gravitational waves. However, this will not happen for several hundred million years. The observations were made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. They show the nucleus of an extraordinarily bright galaxy, known as NGC 6240, contains two giant black holes, both taking material from their surroundings. This discovery shows that massive black holes can grow through mergers in the centres of galaxies. Cosmic fingerprints "The breakthrough came with Chandra's ability to clearly distinguish the two nuclei, and measure the details of the X-radiation from each nucleus," says Guenther Hasinger, of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany.

Helvetica is one of the most popular typefaces of all time. It was designed by Max Miedinger in 1957 for the Haas foundry of Switzerland (the name is derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland). The design is based on the grotesques of the late nineteenth century, but new refinements put it in the sans serif sub-category of neo-grotesque. Shortly after its introduction, the Stempel foundry purchased the original Helvetica typeface and developed a full series of weights. In the 1960s Helvetica came to the United States, where alignment standards differed; Mergenthaler Linotype copied the Stempel series and then added several new versions of the design. Helvetica is an all-purpose type design that can deliver practically any message clearly and efficiently. The condensed and compressed Helvetica designs are excellent for display applications such as newspaper or newsletter headlines, billboards, and advertising.

Next Max Planck: the reluctant revolutionary
Feature: December 2000 It was 100 years ago when Max Planck published a paper that gave birth to quantum mechanics - or so the story goes. History reveals, however, that Planck did not immediately realize the consequences of his work and became a revolutionary against his will. According to the standard story, which is unfortunately still found in many physics textbooks, quantum theory emerged when it was realized that classical physics predicts an energy distribution for black-body radiation that disagrees violently with that found experimentally. In the late 1890s, so the story continues, the German physicist Wilhelm Wien developed an expression that corresponded reasonably well with experiment - but had no theoretical foundation. When Lord Rayleigh and James Jeans then analysed black-body radiation from the perspective of classical physics, the resulting spectrum differed drastically from both experiment and the Wien law. Faced with this grave anomaly, Max Planck looked for a solution, during the course of which he was forced to introduce the notion of "energy quanta". With the quantum hypothesis, a perfect match between theory and experiment was obtained. Voila! Quantum theory was born.

http://www.max-planck.mpg.de/seite11/english.html
The theory of thermal radiation
The radiation laws for black bodies according to Planck, Wien, and Rayleigh-Jeans.
Max Planck began to take an interest in investigating radiative equilibria in the mid-1890s. At that time physicists knew very little about the regularies according to which a heated object, for example, emits thermal and luminous radiation. The properties of thermal radiation can be described with the help of a model, what is called a ``black body''. The radiation emitted from such a body does not depend on the material that it is made of. It obeys a universal function dependent on temperature and frequency. Constructing such a black body was a challenging problem in itself, just as was finding that universal function. The national institution of standard weights and measures in Germany, the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR) in Berlin, was then the center of radiation research-not least because of its practical implications for the nascent lamp industry. In 1896 Wilhelm Wien, a member of the staff at that institution, was the first to suggest a law that seemed to be empirically supported, describing the spectral distribution of energy as a function of temperature. Three years later Planck managed to derive this semi-empirically obtained radiation formula theoretically. But precision measurements taken at the PTR soon revealed that in the range of long waves there were considerable deviations from the radiation formula by Wien and Planck. New measurements agreed with a radiation formula that the English physicist Lord Rayleigh had just recently published.
