RTU – for the Development of Latvia This autumn, on 14 October 2002, Riga Technical University is celebrating the 140th anniversary of the very beginning of its activities. At the same time it is a significant anniversary for higher education in Latvia as it marks the establishment of the first institution of higher education on the territory of Latvia. As a matter of fact, this higher educational establishment, created in the middle of the 19th century, may be considered the alma mater of all our universities. In this school one could get higher education in very important fields of study, which were in high demand: engineering sciences, mechanics (machine–building), architecture, land surveying, agriculture, chemistry and even in commerce. At present Latvian state–founded and private institutions of higher education are active in the above mentioned fields, and, particularly, in commerce. However, Riga Technical University remains an indisputable leader in the field of Engineering Sciences. The afore mentioned diversity of study directions was the reason for giving the newly established institution the name of polytechnic, i.e., multi–branched higher technical school, by analogy with the tradition that had originated in Europe. At the very beginning it was given the popular name POLYTECHNICUM, which has undergone a number of transformations in the course of years. Another important fact should be mentioned here: Riga Higher School was the first polytechnical institution of higher education in the Russian Empire, which at that time included the present territory of Latvia. The famous Moscow Highest Technical School acquired the status of a higher school only a few years later.

Riga
Riga, an old Hansa-city, has lived through a complicated history.
Johann Gottfried Herder lived here in 1764-1769 and started here what was later called "Sturm und Drang" movement. Immanuel Kant published here in 1781 the first edition of his Critique of Pure Reason. Richard Wagner wrote his Rienzi in 1840 in Riga and started his conductor's career in a newly established opera theater. Shimon Dubnow, the author of the multi-volume History of Jews in Poland and Russia wrote Kniga Zhizni in Riga. Wilhelm Ostwald was born in Riga and started here his research in catalysis and chemical equilibria that earned him the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1909. Mstislav Keldysh, President of the USSR Academy of Science, and Lipman Bers, President of the American Mathematical Society, were born in Riga. Piers Bohl proved the first ever fixed-point theorem in 1904.

And to include policies into their regular professional activities with the aim to minimize the exposure of people or entire populations to disasters. While the course is highly condensed, students upon completion of the course should: 1. have some understanding of the power and size distribution of natural processes that during extreme events can lead to disasters;

AIVARS LORENCS scientist, mathematician, Professor of the University of Latvia, successfully connected with the beginnings of computer science in Latvia despite having lost his eyesight as a boy. I was born in a family of fishermen on the 7-th of December 1933 in the Dundaga parish. Already in early childhood I was a pronounced thinker, keen on observation. I was interested in technical problems. This interest I had inherited from my father Arvids Lorencs who had only a poor education, not having had any opportunity or possibility of going to school. That was during the time of the First World War, when my grandmother with her two sons had to be evacuated from Kurzeme to Russia. The army burnt everything down on its march and compelled the population to abandon their homes. After his return my father had to do manual work, yet kept his technical interests all his life and was rather clever in technical things. I, too, had that lively interest in technical problems. And so it happened after the Second World War, that accidentally a detonator of a grenade came into my hands, of which I wanted to get the explosive out. I had to do it fast, although I knew that one had to be careful. The explosion made me blind for life, leaving no hope of any further technical occupation. From that time on I cannot consider myself as an independent person. I continued my education at the boarding school for children blind or with weak eyesight. Up to the last form I never thought particularly about mathematics. I was equally successful in all subjects. I paid particular attention to physics, especially to experimental physics, being, however, seriously handicapped. Another subject I was interested in was philosophy. Although there existed a University in Latvia, it did no have any philosophy department. The nearest thing was the chair of Marxism, which did not attract me, even if I did have a lively interest in the works of the revolutionary democrats. I was deeply interested in history. I read everything I could get hold of, yet I did not desire to become a historian by profession. Thus, after a careful choice, I decided for mathematics.

Expresso - by DOUG HISSOM It's a Range War Getting down and dirty in the Menomonee Valley The mayor's office has decided to go after 100 acres of Menomonee Valley turf which happens to be owned by the CMC Heartland Corp. The method of getting it will be condemnation and the result will be a light manufacturing center employing 1,000, says City Hall. Seems city planners are tired of waiting for CMC to get something new built on the acreage, which abuts a stadium parking lots and is near 35th St. And sitting is something CMC has been doing since 1989. CMC can remain sitting pretty with this turn of events, however, since part of its parcel was traded to the state for a Miller Park parking lot. That deal came with some agreements that have yet to happen. The city also has to offer fair value for the dirt. But its first offer seems to be worth about that much, too. There's plenty of vacant land in the valley to industrialize, and the city has continued the aromatic feature of a tallow company towards the east end. CMC wants to hold out to get some retail and entertainment business for the land, something the area sorely needs. It's been said more than once by visitors to County Stadium-and even more will be saying it next year at Miller Park-that there's a decided lack of anything to do in the area after the game. And by the time sportsfans get Downtown, the sidewalks are rolled up. City Hall's thinking must be that we can entertain the tourists by taking tours of tallow factories vacant stockyards. Perhaps they could call it the "Dairyland Heritage Holstein Candle-making Tour." And those great industrial views from the Hank Aaron State Bike Trail will be the stuff post cards are made of.

Izcilu cilvçku jubilejâs apsveikumi ir dîvaina lieta. Jubilârs sçþ uz skatuves, apsveicçji nâk viòam klât un sâk stâstît jubilâra biogrâfiju, it kâ jubilârs pats to nezinâtu.
