Bohr's Youth
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on October 7, 1885, in a large Copenhagen house that belonged to his maternal grandmother. His father, Professor Christian Bohr , was an internationally renowned physiologist who held a medical degree but never practiced as a doctor. His mother, Ellen Adler , was the daughter of a prominent banker and politician. The parents held progressive views and raised their children with an emphasis on such values as generosity and openness. Christian and Ellen also endeavored to create an effective intellectual atmosphere for their family, which also included older sister Jenny and younger brother Harald , by encouraging independent development.

Atomic energy - The energy generated from the splitting of the atom (though nuclear fusion would later add further possibilities).
Bohr atomic model - The Bohr model stabilized Rutherford's original picture by showing that the atom could exist only in discrete energy states.
Complementarity - In light of the indeterminacy set forth by Heisenberg's uncertainty principle , the principle of complementarity argues that two answers are preferable to one when neither is itself complete.
Compound nucleus - A temporary excited state of the nucleus that occurs upon the collision of two particles. Bohr postulated that the nucleus might discharge this excess energy through the emission of radiation.

Niels Henrik David Bohr ) was een Deense theoretische natuur- en scheikundige. In ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor de Natuurkunde Niels Bohr wordt algemeen gezien als één van de grondleggers van de atoomfysica .
