Once when Bohr had just arrived at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study following a week-long ocean voyage from Denmark, he suffered from having spent so many days alone with his thoughts. When he entered the Institute he spotted two physicists, Abraham Pais and Wolfgang Pauli, in the hallway. Niels Bohr Physiker Bohr ist wissenschaftlich tätig an der Universität von Cambridge und unter Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) in Manchester. Rutherford führt den Begriff "Atomkern" ein und geht von der Vorstellung eines winzigen massiven Kerns innerhalb eines planetarischen Modells aus. Nobelpreis Max Plancks und Albert Einsteins ab 1916 Bohr stellt über das "Korrespondenzprinzip" den Zusammenhang zur klassischen Physik her: Bei großen Quantenzahlen gehen die Aussagen der Quantentheorie in die der klassischen Physik über. ab 1920 Veröffentlichung seiner Schrift "Über die Quantentheorie der Linienspektren". Bohr entwickelt das "Aufbauprinzip" und liefert damit eine theoretische Erklärung der chemischen Elemente. Die äußeren Schalen der ring- bzw. schalenförmig angeordneten Elektronen bestimmen die chemischen Eigenschaften des Atoms. In Zusammenarbeit mit Werner Heisenberg ab 1935 Bohr befaßt sich vor allem mit Fragen der Kernphysik. Er führt zur Erklärung der Kernreaktionen bei Teilchenbeschuß den Begriff des "Compoundkerns" ein. Sein Konzept eines "Tröpfchenmodells" des Atomkerns ist ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis vieler nuklearer Prozesse. Z content revised MAY Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics As the theory of the atom, quantum mechanics is perhaps the most successful theory in the history of science. It enables physicists, chemists, and technicians to calculate and predict the outcome of a vast number of experiments and to create new and advanced technology based on the insight into the behavior of atomic objects. But it is also a theory that challenges our imagination. It seems to violate some fundamental principles of classical physics, principles that eventually have become a part of western common sense since the rise of the modern worldview in the Renaissance. So the aim of any metaphysical interpretation of quantum mechanics is to account for these violations. The Copenhagen interpretation was the first general attempt to understand the world of atoms as this is represented by quantum mechanics. The founding father was mainly the Danish physicist Niels Bohr, but also Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and other physicists made important contributions to the overall understanding of the atomic world that is associated with the name of the capital of Denmark. Niels, together with his younger brother Harald (the future Professor in Mathematics), grew up in an atmosphere most favourable to the development of his genius - his father was an eminent physiologist and was largely responsible for awakening his interest in physics while still at school, his mother came from a family distinguished in the field of education. After matriculation at the Gammelholm Grammar School in 1903, he entered Copenhagen University where he came under the guidance of Professor C. Christiansen, a profoundly original and highly endowed physicist, and took his Master's degree in Physics in 1909 and his Doctor's degree in 1911. While still a student, the announcement by the Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen of a prize to be awarded for the solution of a certain scientific problem, caused him to take up an experimental and theoretical investigation of the surface tension by means of oscillating fluid jets. Encyclopedia Bohr, Niels Henrik David [n E E k d A E O r] Pronunciation Key Bohr, Niels Henrik David , Danish physicist, one of the foremost scientists of modern physics. He studied at the Univ. of Copenhagen (Ph.D. 1911) and carried on research on the structure of the atom at Cambridge under Sir James J. Thomson and at Manchester under Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1916, Bohr became professor of theoretical physics at the Univ. of Copenhagen, and in 1920 he was made director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he was instrumental in founding. Rutherford had discovered the nucleus of the atom in 1911, but classical theory was unable to explain the stability of the nuclear model of the atom. Bohr provided the solution to this problem in 1913, when he postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits and explained the manner in which the atom absorbs and emits energy. He thus combined the quantum theory with this concept of atomic structure. Much of the knowledge of modern physics was made possible by Bohr's initial revolutionary assumption that atomic processes cannot be explained by classical laws alone. Bohr was a leading figure in the continuing development of the quantum theory over the next twenty years. He received the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics. When Bohr visited the United States in 1938 and 1939, Bohr told American scientists of his belief, based on experiments reported by German scientists, that the uranium atom could be split into approximately equal halves. This was verified by scientists at Columbia. Bohr returned to Denmark but fled from the Nazi-occupied country in 1943. He gave valuable assistance in the atomic bomb research at Los Alamos, N.Mex., and in 1945 again returned to Denmark. His writings include
