Ludwig Boltzmann
Ludwig Boltzmann was born in Austria in 1844. Awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna, he never stayed in any University post for long. At least half jokingly, he used to say that the reason he moved around so much was that he was born during the dying hours of a Mardi Gras ball. However he also suffered from rapid swings between happiness and sadness which probably also encouraged him to move regularly. His personality certainly had a major impact on the direction that his career took and personal relationships, where he was always very soft-hearted, played a big part. He was short and stout with curly hair and his fiancée called him her "sweet fat darling". Boltzmann worked in an area of physics now called statistical mechanics , using probability to describe how the properties of groups of atoms determine the properties of matter. However Boltzmann's ideas were not accepted by many scientists, particularly the older, more established and well-known figures. Some felt that Boltzmann's work denied that God was at the heart of physics, whilst others simply could not understand his ideas and equations. One of Boltzmann's biggest opponents was Wilhelm Ostwald, a physical chemist who had once been a close colleague. The events of one meeting they attended in 1895 was described by a fellow scientist as follows :

    Ludwig Boltzmann , hijo de un funcionario de impuestos. Su niñez la pasó en el entorno de un hogar tranquilo y de situación económica acomodada. Una circunstancia muy distinta a la que vivieron su profesor guía Josef Stefan y su más íntimo y querido amigo el notable físico-químico Josef Loschmidt. Él no necesitó trabajar para salir de una pobre aldea e ir a la universidad. No tuvo que ayudar en una granja a padres analfabetos como le sucedió a Stefan, ni tuvo que atender ganado en su juventud, dar clases particulares o trabajar en una industria química como lo tuvo que hacer Loschmidt. Tuvo la suerte de ser siempre ayudado por su devota madre Katharina Paurnfeind, y de heredar cuando joven de su abuelo materno, un fabricante de relojes, una pequeña fortuna, lo que le permitió poder concentrarse en sus estudios.
    Boltzmann cursó sus estudios de enseñanza media en Linz, Austria septentrional, donde se había mudado su familia. Era un estudiante ambicioso e impaciente. En sus años mozos, su interés estuvo centrado en la naturaleza, coleccionando y clasificando lepidópteras, y estudiando las plantas. Tuvo el infortunio de perder a su padre a la edad de 15 años.
    Egresado de enseñanza media, Boltzmann estudió física en la Universidad de Viena. Entre sus profesores estaban José Petzval, quien había logrado grandes avances en la construcción de lentes fotográficos; Anrease von Ettingshausen, y Josph Stefan, con quien trabajó sobre la radiación continua. Recibió su doctorado en 1866 y su primera ayudantía docente en 1867. Después de trabajar con Stefan durante dos años, lo nombraron profesor de física teórica en la Universidad de Graz, en la provincia de Styria. Después de cuatro años en ese cargo, en 1873 aceptó la titularidad de una de las cátedras de matemáticas en la Universidad de Viena. Tres años después, vuelve a Graz, pero esta vez por un tiempo mayor, para desempeñar la cátedra de física experimental.

Boltzmann's reply to his award is given below Boltzmann also gave four talks on the principles and basic equations of mechanics. These talks are currently being translated from German into English. To honor Boltzmann's work and his visit to Clark, a honorary degree was awarded to Joel Lebowitz , a recipient of the Boltzmann medal , on May 23, 1999.

    The problem of science is a twofold one: first, to advance our knowledge of nature independently of any practical application; and second, to make practical applications of the knowledge gained. Although to a superficial observer it may seem that the latter is of greater importance, the development of humanity has shown in the most convincing way that the first kind of activity is not only of paramount importance, but that the leading role belongs to it. In fact, it is only thanks to the pioneers of science who, laying aside all practical applications, penetrate deeper and deeper into the essence and arrangement of the forces of nature, that humanity has obtained that sway over the laws of nature which makes possible the present practical achievements. The German universities have devoted themselves at all times to the nurture of pure science apart from its practical applications, although but one of the four university faculties is consecrated to it, and that one not entirely. It must be considered as a good omen, therefore, that here in America, which is usually taken to be the land of practical men, the ideal of a place entirely consecrated to the service of pure science, unattainable in Germany, has found its realization, so that I, who am body and soul a German professor, deem it a great honor to have conferred on me in this place, the greatest distinction which the University can grant. While desiring Clark University to flourish and thrive in the intimate conviction that the whole scientific world is interested in her prosperity, I express my thanks to the President and all its members for the high honor bestowed upon me today.

Das Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Neuroonkologie testet seit Jahren für in- und ausländische Partner Serum und/oder Liquor auf das Vorhandensein von zirkulierenden antineuronalen Antikörpern (CANA) bei paraneoplastisch neurologischem Syndrom (PNS). Zusätzlich zu dieser Testung arbeitet das Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Neuroonkologie am Aufbau eines CANA-Registers.     Boltzmann in njegova zaroèenka leta 1876. ®ivljenje in delo Dunajèana Ludwiga Eduarda Boltzmanna (1844-1906), ki je objavil skoraj sto pomembnej¹ih razprav o teoriji toplote in ¹e toliko o drugih podroèjih fizike, je bilo tesno povezano s ¹tevilnimi ¾ivljenjskimi sopotniki slovenskega rodu. Njegove prve korake v fiziko je usmeril Koro¹ec Stefan. Boltzmannova ¾ena je bila na pol Slovenka. Njegov najbolj¹i ¹tudent je bil Dolenjec Klemenèiè. Boltzmannov poglavitni filozofski nasprotnik, a tudi osebni prijatelj, je bil Mach, katerega star¹i so ¾iveli na Dolenjskem. Pomemben raziskovalec Boltzmannove transportne enaèbe je bil Ivan Ku¹èer (1920-2000), ki se je rodil na Dunaju 14 let po Boltzmannovi smrti. Boltzmann je ¹tudiral pri Stefanu na Dunaju. Po Stefanovem priporoèilu je postal predstojnik katedre za matematièno fiziko na univerzi v Gradcu. Stefan se je prav posebno potrudil zanj, saj je pisal ministru za "uk in bogoèastje":
    Pismo direktorja dunajskega fizikalnega instituta Jo¾efa Stefana (1835-1893) ministrstvu za uk in bogoèastje, podpisano 8.4.1869. Del predzadnje in zadnja stran je hvalnica Boltzmannu, ki mu je kmalu po petindvajsetem rojstnem dnevu omogoèila prevzem katedre za matematièno fiziko na univerzi v Gradcu.

    Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Edinburgh Abstract This talk will describe Ludwig , a general purpose code for the simulation of Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) models in 3D on cubic lattices. Ludwig is not a single code, but a set of codes that share certain common routines, such as I/O and communications. If Ludwig is used as intended, new models should be simple to code, so that one may concentrate on the physics of the problem, rather than on parallel computing issues. The purpose of this presentation is to explain the philosophy and structure of Ludwig which is believed to be the most effective way of developing large codes for academic consortia. The talk will then elaborate on some parallel implementation issues such as parallel I/O, and the use of MPI to achieve full portability and good efficiency on MPP systems such as the Cray T3D and T3E. The second part of this presentation will introduce ground-breaking results for the study of 3-D spinodal decomposition in the inertial regime over an unprecedented range of reduced time and length scales [1,2], simulation of fluid mixtures under shear using sheared planes [2] and Lees-Edwards boundary conditions, and a novel scheme for the simulation of the wetting phenomenon [3].
