    A rendezvényt Kirsch Attila, a Református Kollégium Bolyai Farkas Liceum Öregdiákok Baráti körének elnöke nyitotta, utána városunk alporgármestere Csegzi Sándor tisztelt meg beszédével, melyet a Református Kollégium kórusának eloadása követett. Wessely Tibor, a liceum jelenlegi tanára, bolyai kutató, a Bolyaiak csodálatos hagyatékáról beszélt, majd Kiss Elemér, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia tagja beszélt Bolyai János személyiségének egy egész más oldaláról, mellyel a Teleki Téka könyvtárban megtalálható mintegy 14000 oldalnyi Bolyai kézirataiban "ismerkedhetett" meg. E két nagy Bolyai kutató beszédét, az Elixir együttes világi énekekbol összeállitott musora követte, majd Bolyais diákok szavalták el Babits, Tóth István és Szilágyi néhány Bolyairól szóló verseit. A rendezvény egyik bevezetoje a tulajdonképpeni Bolyai évnek (2002), melyet városunk Polgármesteri Hivatala kezdeményezett.

    Hungarian mathematician who was the son of Farkas Bolyai . When Bolyai began puzzling over Euclid's fifth postulate his father wrote him "For God's Sake, I beseech you, give it up. Fear it no less than sensual passions because it, too, may take all your time, deprive you of your health, peace of mind, and happiness in life" (Boyer 1968, p. 587). Janos did not heed his father, however, and his work, which paralleled that of Lobachevsky , was published by his father. However, Bolyai's lack of recognition and the publishing of Lobachevsky's work led him to publish nothing more. Bolyai (Farkas) Lobachevsky

    English Janos Bolyai Biography Janos Bolyai (December 15, 1802 - January 27, 1860) was born in Kolozsvar, Transylvania, at that time a Hungarian Grand Duchy ruled by the Hapsburgs, and died in Marosvasarhely, Transylvania. Janos Bolyai, son of Farkas Bolyai, the famous professor of mathematics, physics and chemistry at the Reformed College in Marosvasarhely, as a teenager set himself to resolve the 2000 year old geometry problem, intensively researched also by his father: T o prove Euclid's fifth, the so called parallel postulate from Euclid's others. The fifth postulate requires that given a line in the plane and a point outside of it, there exists exactly one line through the point that is parallel to the line. After he had recognized the impossibility of this task, he developed absolute geometry that is independent of the fifth postulate and also hyperbolic geometry where this postulate is negated in such a way that infinitely many parallels are assumed to exist through the given point to the given line.

    Janos Bolyai Conference in New Brunswick Janos Bolyai, the greatest figure in Hungarian science, was born 200 years ago. After the conferences in Hungary and Transylvania the Bolyai anniversary will be celebrated also in the USA, by a scientific conference, which will begin in the evening of November 22nd and terminate in the evening of November 23rd. The lectures will be given in an easily understandable style, and explain the universal importance of Bolyai's discovery. The conference is organized by the Bolyai Lecture Series on Arts and Sciences, the American Hungarian Foundation, and the Hungarian Cultural Center of New York. The Conference starts on Friday, November 22, with evening registration and a 'get together' party PM ). A cultural program starts at 7:30 PM.     Great Hungarian mathematician from Transylvannia. He studied at the Academy for Engineers Corps in Vienna. He made a brilliant figure while being a student by his significant findings. His crucial work, called "Appendix", which he had written in 1832, in no realisation of what Russian mathematician N. I. Lobacevski was doing almost at the same time, fathered the non-Euclidean geometry. Written in Latin, it was meant as a complementary work to his father's, Bolyai Farkas, manual titled: "Tentamen". In 1837 Bolyai also dedicated his study "Responsio" to complex numbers theory. His findings are dialectical contributions to mathematical problems, as he laid new foundations to geometry and prepared it for new horizons.     Mare matematician maghiar din Transilvania. A urmat Academia de geniu de la Viena si inca din timpul studiilor a facut o serie de descoperiri insemnate. Lucrarea lui epocala prin care a creat, independent de matematicianul rus N. I. Lobacevski, geometria neeuclidiana este "Appendix" (1832), aparuta in limba latina ca o completare a manualului intitulat "Tentamen", scris de Bolyai Farkas, tatal sau. Bolyai a scris si un studiu cu privire la teoria numerelor complexe ("Responsio", 1837). Rezultatele pe care le-a obtinut reprezinta o aprofundare dialectica a problemelor matematicii. Lucrarile lui Bolyai au pus geometria pe baze noi, deschizandu-i largi perspective. Ele nu au fost insa intelese si apreciate de contemporanii sai.
